A Four times a day, Mrs. Allen had the responsibility of seeing that 700 children arrived at school safely, and returned to theirâ€" homes. She faced many problems in her job, the greatâ€" est of which was not the chilâ€" dren, but the parents who folâ€" lowed the rule "Do as 1 say, and not as I do". It was a difâ€" ficult task, as adults and studâ€" ents from the Junior High School set a very poor example to the youngsters. During the past year, the corâ€" ner was converted from a one way crossing to the use of all four corners, which made it a mammoth task to undertake. Mrs. Allen had the respect of all children and they certainly are going to miss her. Should you perchance to see a "figure" skating (all 250 pounds of him) with pillows strapped front and rear â€" it‘ll be me learning how to become a better member of the Minor Hockey Executive by learning how to skate â€" this is what we mean by the outstanding "figure" skatâ€" ing â€" â€" oh, boy! CHECKMATE: Al Cooper, public relations and publicity director of the well known Weston Chess Club, entered my office via the communicatâ€" ing door from the Recreation Office to the Craft Rooms last Thursday evening and said for me to tell you all that you are corâ€" dially invited to come and play Chess and Thursday evening you like. How‘s that for sentence structure? That‘s not the way he said it, but that‘s the way it came through to me. When Al Cooper came into the office there were eight young ladies attending the organization meeting of a Drama School â€" maybe he thought it was a Charm Schon! or enmeatkiner The most effective committees are those in which leadership functions are assumed equally by all members. Each member should be recognized for the special skills that he can contribute to the committee function. These special skills may be forever dormant in some members â€" and will require the special skill of the chairman to allow this member to make his contribution. Maybe he‘s happy with the ‘status‘ membership on this commitâ€" tee automatically conters. Creatively results from clashes of opinions and ideas. By smoothing over conflict many of the creative ideas that conflict can generate one automatically lost. Conflict upsets committee harmony and the ‘creative disturber‘ upsets the status quo of the soft, togetherness group and our ‘creative disturber‘ is not welâ€" come. + Personally, we would wish to create a new order of creative disturbers filled with a "divine discontent" to infiltrate comâ€" mittees where even they exist â€" so that the committee becomes a creative, responsible agency, with a record of performance and achievement â€" and the committee‘s commitment will be to the stated objectives of the club, group or agency to which they beâ€" long and not to themselves or to preserving their status quo. Like someone said, "Man has more need to improve his stature than his status quo." More often than not, committee members were elected, nomâ€" inated or appointed to that office â€" few volunteer. The committee must provide leadership within the function or task allotted to it, and maintain committée structure. Thus the leadership has two functions. One is getting the job done or task function, and the other is meeting the personal needs of each committee memâ€" ber â€" so that the committee can function effectively â€" or work together as a unit. If this is to be a good committee. If concern for task and concern for the members or maintenance is to be considered â€" then, we maintain, there is bound to be friction. We have heard of, but never served on, one of these nice committees where there is never a cross word, or a dissenting opinion. If they all agree â€" there is no need for a committee! If. among my gentle readers, there should be any who would wish to qualify for a CD ‘certificate (Creative Disturbers) we would be most happy to arrange for a series of lectures on good committee structure, personal leadership styles, effective comâ€" mittee work and how to conduct better meetings. FIGURE SKATING CLUB â€" WESTON: The members of the Weston Skating Club will be conducting an Open House on Sunday, October 17 (this year) at the Weston Arena and the time is set for 3:00 P.M. So who‘s on your committee? Why do you think old soâ€"andâ€"so is on the committee? Did he volunteer â€" or was he or she asked to serve on your committee? People belong to committees and contribute work or interest to those committees only to the degree of personal satisfaction obâ€" tained by participation in that committee‘s function. When things get too nice at committee level, I am sometimes guilty of deliberately introducing friction â€" sometimes even arguâ€" ing against what I know to be good practice and principles â€" in order to obtain a concern for task, get people thinking instead of just reacting and to obtain a committee that will be sure of itself. it‘s role and function. To sit and listen to the same dreary old opinions for hours and hours is not a committee function. To get on with the task â€" to solve problems, to listen to the other members‘ ideas and viewâ€" point, leads to effective committee work and the personal satisfacâ€" tion such action brings. When a committee sits down to solve a problem, alternative courses of action will develop â€" although members all agree on the problem. A variety of leadership styles will emerge, dependâ€" ing upon the degree of individual concern for the job to be done. People will line up behind one of the proposed alternative courses of action and, in so selecting, conflict will emerge. We believe that conflict is necessary to cr;ativit,v and that it is very important for the committee to recognize this fact and learn how to handle such situations. comers, learners, men ty "TUG" WILSON Director of Parks & Recreation for the Town of Westo: COMMITTEE CONFLICT: Barristers â€" Solicitors 1944 Weston Road Opposite John Street Weston, Ont.
