Bull North York council‘s decision in awarding a $2.2 million contract to commence construction of a municiâ€" pal garbage incinerator is a shortâ€" sighted, terrible mistake. Short â€" sighted â€" because council should +have recognized its acute garbage disposal problem and launâ€" ched a study to solve it 10 years ago. And a terrible mistake because Metropolitan Toronto at this momenc is spending $175,000 to ascertain the most efficient and desirable means of disposing household and industrial wastes. The six (or is it $7 million?) million dollars that North York will pay for this incinerator may be inâ€" vested in what could well turn out to be a white elephant five years hence. If we couple the short sightedness and the terrible mistake then, to the facts submitted to council by its own works commissioner, we end up with a situation that smells as bad as household garbage would if it were Howard G. There are two additional reasons why council should have taken anâ€" other good look at the incinerator before letting the contract. 1. According to engineers it will cost Metro hundreds of thousands of dollars annually for water to filter out some of the smoke that would otherwise be belted into the atmosphere. 2. The filth in the atmosphere is fast becoming a serious health hazard. Burning hundreds of thousands of tons of garbage can only agâ€" grevate this problem. ‘ Phone 244â€"5324 York wants eight wards, one !councillor elected from â€" each, ‘.and aâ€"mayor and two man board of control elected at large. Earlier this year, council instructed the bylaw enforcement department Rivalda Industries Clean Up Or Face Court Action: Godfrey We have been deeply moved by the suffering of the people of Vietnam, the use of savage modern weapons and the crueities of inhuman torture that characterize the war in Vietnam. We are outraged attthis needless suffering, and grieved and saddened by the grave moral decadence and increasing ‘callousness of the present situation. We are sorely distressed that our own Government has not only failed publicly to renounce support for this US. policy, but has expresslv upheld it. So says the policy statement of the Canadian Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. In my view it‘s a erying shame that all the churches in Canada are not as blunt as the Quakers on insisting that the goverament of Canada should attempt to uphold the Fifth Commandment. . Has the Christian Church in Canada let humanity down? Yes, I think it has. While everyone, from the President of the United States and President of North Viet Nam right on down say they abhor the terrible slaughter in Vietnam, the war goes on because those such as the powerful Christian churches in Canada either pretend the war doesn‘t exist or say they. don‘t really know what it is all about. One journalist recently wrote that each bomb the mighty USAF drops on the Vietcong, each shell that bursts wiping out the lives of innocent women and children. creates more hatred among the Vietnamese for our southerly neighbor. And why not? Countless thousands of Jews will never forâ€" give the Germans for cruelty and needlessly taking the lives of their kindred. "We are sorely distressed that our own Government has not only failed publicly to renounce support of this U.S. policy, but has expressly upheld it." I too, am sorely dis tressed and believe that thousands and perhaps millions of other Canadians are too. President Johnson and his administration are committed to a policy of war and bloodshed in Vietnam. They know of no other way to prevent Communist aggression. As I mentioned earlier, the Christian church in Canada has a very powerful voice in the affairs of this country. Why doesn‘t it use this voice and holler from the roof tops to tell our government that it should use every ounce of strength it has to negotiate a truce among the Americans and Vietnamese? Why doesn‘t the Church tell the Federal Cabinet to fight for the Fifth Commandment? â€" So long as powerful groups such as the churches and labor organizations remain quiet on this potential World War III issue, our government isn‘t going to pay more than lip service to the war over there because the U.S. if it wanted could make things pretty rough for us. _ _ _ _ > Johnson forgets however that Communist. Capitalist, Athiest or Christian, we are all brothers in the eyes of God. We must however, remember that things will be infinitely rougher if we don‘t get cracking and end the bloodshed.. The only ones who benefit from this conflict are the industries who manufacture the devastating, man killing machinery. If this war escalades into a World War, even these industries won‘t be worth two cents. _ God commanded: "Thou shall not kill.‘ I wish the Chrisâ€" tian churches of Canada would remind our government that this law applies to Vietnam as well as North America. 1966 Chevelle Malibu â€" 2 Door Hardtop 1966 Chevrolet Biscayne â€" 4 Door Sedan YoU SAVE _ $604.00 Madeira Maroon, matching SALE trim, automatic transmisâ€" sion, radio, rear seat speaki PRICE er, whitewall tires whee discs, safety package.
