(‘Ozzie‘) Waffle were introduced and spoke for a few minutes recalling the first day the hospital opened. _ Mrs. Owen _ remembered â€"the many hours of work and the inâ€" genuity by the groups of enthusiâ€" astic workers. She recalled the efforts to raise the needed $5,000 . . only â€"Photos by Stan Windrim 256 15c 25c 15¢ 256 15¢ 15¢ 20c 15¢ TYc at to pay for the hospital‘s first linen supply.‘ Mr. Denny, who mn‘ Board Chairman ‘after Crawford Gordon, Jr. in 1956, and who is now Chairman of the Building and Property Committee of the Hosâ€" pital, looked forward cheerfully to the future, and hoped that the next ten years would be as m m.‘.uin and successful as the has been, Mr. Waffle added the light touch by recalling that his speech ten years ago at Openâ€" ing Day was very short: "Only thirtyâ€"five minutes long" and he presented a picture of a few of the platform guests on that ‘hisâ€" toric occasion.‘ Mr. Appleton paid tribute to the inspiration and the work of Dr. Alison E. Noble of the hospital‘s medical staff who was one of the prime movers in getting the hospital started, and Dr. and Mrs. Noble stepped forward to blow out the candles on the birthâ€" day cake. Of special significance to the staff was the gathering together of many original staff members who were with the hospital on Opening Day in July 1956, and who are still with the hospital today. With roses tucked into their name badges, 17 staff members were introduced by Harry F. Garâ€" wood, Administrator, himself an original ‘doorâ€"opener.‘ A feature of the gathering was a table top exhibit of various items as souvenirs of previous occasions: the silver key used by the Hon. W. A. Goodfellow, Minister of Municipal Affairs who opened the door of the 1956 hospital; the large wooden "scalpel" used by Dr. Matthew Dymond, Minister of Health in November 1961, at the indoor sodâ€"turning ceremony for the start of the first building exâ€" pansion; and the goldâ€"plated enâ€" graved scissors used by the Hon. Earl Rowe, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario to cut the ribbon across the door of the new 5â€"storey wing in September of last year which brought the hospital up to its present 331 beds. _ â€" â€" It was an informal occasion with many nostalgic aspects of a reâ€" union, since the Queensway Hosâ€" pital is a very personal institution, having been built from the efforts and enthusiasm of many public spirited citizens who knew of the urgent need for a community hosâ€" pital and who worked hard and long to realize their goal. Over 900 people from the community are employed full or part time at the hospital, and nearly 500 women are volunteer members of the Women‘s Auxiliary including second generation "candystripers", the high school students who assist with mail, flowers and errands. This person involvement by so many makes the hospital what it is today on its tenth anniversary; a true community hospital serving the people of the community. Oz Waffle â€" as reeve of Etobicoke his speech at the hospital opening 10 years ago lasted "only 35 minutes!" How did pioneer women prepare their food in preâ€"Confederation Upper Canada?
