So counâ€" cil feels that to take action against one rooming house operator and not the others amounts to gross discrimâ€" ination. This is a sound and valid argument to a point. The trouble is however, If North York councillors face the fact that officials of their administraâ€" tion had erred badly in the early If there is one thing that Weston councillors should do before the end of the year when most of them beâ€" come "unemployed politicians," it is this: Drop the zoning bylaw which forbids rooming house business in areas zoned single family residential. Recently it was brought to the atâ€" tention of council that there is at least one rooming house operating on Dennison Rd. W.. which is conâ€" trary to the zoning bylaw. North York approved the subdiviâ€" ion plans to build at the edges â€" of ravines and North York issued the building permits. Clearly then, slidâ€" ding. ravines are North York‘s proâ€" blem and it is up to North York to take remedial action. Why should the Ontario governâ€" ment and MTRCA be asked to step in and invest huge sums to prevent land filled ravines from â€" slipping, they had nothing to do with the homes being built on "floating" soil in the first place. â€" â€" In a recent editorial, the Toronto Star said the Metropolitan Toronto and Region Conservation Authority should buy up houses dangerously perched at the edge of slipping ravâ€" Since it was NOT MTRCA that isâ€" sued permits to build homes (like those overlooking the Humber Valâ€" ley on Stanwood Cresc.), we see no reason whatsoever, for asking the Authority to bail unfortunate properâ€" ty owners out of their sad prediciâ€" ment. If the Weston councillors are sinâ€" cere about the 1964 election promises to enforce town bylaws, and as the executive body responsible for enâ€" forcing local bylaws, they have two choices. They should either scrap the existâ€" ing bylaw because it is not enforeâ€" able or hire more inspectors to see that it is enforced. Also known is that Weston is terribly understaffed in the bylaw enforcement department and simply doesn‘t have the manpower to watch for landlords taking in roomers on the sly. Reeve James Service has suggestâ€" and that the subdividers and builders should share some of the blame for the sinking back yards on Stanwood Cresc. Builders on the other hand, claim they can‘t be held responsible because their plans and projects were all approved and inspected by the township. In this instance, we suspect that the subdividors are right beâ€" cause if soil isn‘t suitable for conâ€" struction, it is up to the planning and building departments to see that nothing is built on it. .Reeve Service however, is quite right in asking council to approve of a garbage fill plan that may save homes on Stanwood Cresc. that the bylaw is being deliberately flouted and ignored by the rooming house operators, and everyone in town knows it. M 1960‘s in allowing erection of homes in such dangerous settings, and more important if they are required to spend some of the municipal tax dolâ€" lars to solve the ravine problem, it then stands to reason they will never again allow a home building on danâ€" gerous slopes.
