Weston > (At King St.) CH 1â€"2233 BARKER, EDWARD HUBBLE, JENNIE DEATHS leâ€" ~* | THE WESTON TIMES . Thursday, Decombe What on earth were you doing for a whole two weeks anyway? Just lolling about in your amniotic fluid and giving your mother violent backaches, which was not very considerate of you. I hope you werén‘t put off by reports you heard of the outside worldâ€"it isn‘t all napalm in Vietâ€" nam or razorâ€"blades in Hallowe‘en toffeeâ€"apples, believe me. We have lots of nice people we want you to meet, not forgetting the gaccoon and skunk belonging to your aunts. Of course, by ke time you get to know them well, Julie and Joni will much older, but at the moment Julie is the only &â€"yearâ€"old aunt in Grade 4, which has added to her ‘status, On the other hand, I don‘t think Jorf has even. mentioned vyour arrival to her friends yet because when you‘re in Grade 9, being an aunt is a bit of a drag. As she pointed out to me. this means another present at Christâ€" mas and another birthday to be remembered, and it is rather close to Christmas. I may have to put up Joni‘s pocket money if her expenses continue to rise like this. After all, there are other artists to be considered ; I offered him a lovely Monet print for your room, but he refused. I don‘t think he likes Monet and had I known that a yvear or so ago when he and your mother talked about getting married, 1 don‘t know whether I would have been quite so enthusiastic. 1 knew he preferred jazz to classical music, but then no sonâ€"inâ€"law is perfect, but 1 didn‘t know about his addiction to Picasso, I think your mother kept it from me. § I‘m sorry you missed Expo: it was a real swinging event and I imagine you‘ll just miss out on the next Cenâ€" tennial. in 2067. Of course, they‘re doing quite a lot in lorfrevity studies and you would only be a hundred then, which by that time may be only the pMysical equiyalent of middleage. Anyway, if it‘s any consolation, you were your parents‘ Centennial project, which will be something to point out to your grandchildren (by that time, Expo ‘67 will have the same romantic appeal as King Arthur‘s Round Table.) = Anyway, you opened your eyes, winked at me in a rather razzly way, yawned enormously and went to sleep again. On this occasion, 1 made allowancesâ€"I know you were still recovering from the journey, but I do hope you will make more effort to communicate in a week or so. After all. one does have social obligations in this world and it is the mark of a lady that. she discharges her obligations graciously, even if she is feeling tired. Your mother is a good example of that. I suppose by this time yvou have noticed the Chagall and Picasso prints that your father insisted on hanging over your cot. I agree with him that art appreciation cannot start too soon, but I hope you will try to keep an open mind on this subject Just one more thihg before I go, dear ; it‘s about this Granny bit. As you know, I am more or less a public figure (and wotta figure, as your grandfather sometimes .1& Jeering and clicking his false teeth) and it really doesn‘ help my image to be made a granny when I‘m still aonl1 at heart and almost girlish really (if T hold my breath, can almost get into a size 12)..Now I know this isn‘t your fault either â€" we are both infnocent victime of your parâ€" ents‘â€" but 1 would be grateful it you would try to give the impression in public anyway that I‘m your aunt or & close friend or something: I don‘t expect you to&:x lie m;,thiu. but a lot, can be done by implication, can‘t it, > ol better at it as time Ih hall become and loving wa are oo o o un I‘m glad you made the effort to acknowledge my presence when I came to the nursery at the hospital. I wasn‘t even supposed to be there because it was not the right time for nursery inspection, but I sneaked along the corridor pretending I was going to the bathroom and found you lying close to the window, rolled up like a sausageâ€"roll, with a mop of black hair at one end. (By the wayyJody, don‘t comb your hair forward over your forehead like that, it‘s not becoming. I know it‘s Mod, but one has to adapt fashion to suit oneself and until you develop more foreâ€" headâ€"if you do, of courseâ€"you can‘t afford to wear it in that style. Makes you look like something found in a Neandearthal cave.) _ One little thing I want to straighten out right away ; your mother does not have a black beard. T know you think she has, but the one with the black beard is your father. You see, the week after you came home from the hospital your mother developed a ripsnorting cold, so it was your father who lookedâ€"after yvouâ€"when he came home at night and during the night and on weekends, and I don‘t want you to become confused about this sort of thing at your age. There is no doubt that the roles of the sexes are changing in various ways and the old traditions are breakâ€" ing down. but women still don‘t wear beards. For one thing, it is biologically impossible for women to grow beards. I hope this is quite clear? Mind you. I‘m not complaining, Jody dear, just pointâ€" ing out that you must never get the feeling that your arrival was an unalloyed blessingâ€"we are glad you came, but like everything in life, it presents problems. (Most of which, fortunately, will concern your parents.) _ nocks ‘So you finally got here. We all wondered whether you were coming after all. I don‘t want to Be unpleasant at the beginning of our relationship, dear, but you were two weeks overdue and the strain told on all of us. I was my usual tranquil self, of course, because once you‘ve been a mother fourâ€"andâ€"aâ€"half times, becoming a grandmother is quite painless, but it was especially hard on your grandâ€" father. He smoked four extra packets of cigarets during that period and it‘s not good for him at his age. He pretended not to be concerned, of course, but he‘s a little peeved about being made a grandfather just as his temples are turning white and he‘s beginning to look distinguished, LETTER TO MY FIRST GRANDDAUGHTER Dear Jody Elizabeth : j â€"â€"Your loving (if relactant) By JOAN SEAGER
