THANK YOU Easter bunny was once a pet bird When _ Canadians _ celebrate Easter, a predominant feature of family gaiety is the Ente:_ bunny, along with the traditional Easter eggS. Have you ever wondered why the Easter bunny builds a bird‘s nest and lays eggs? It‘s because the bunny was once a bird. The legend is that the original Easter bunny was a bird with brilliant plumage, the pet of Eostra, goddess of spring. But one day â€" to the delight of genâ€" erations of children since â€" Eostra changed her pet bird into a rabbit. From Eostra‘s name comes our word for Easter, and Eostra‘s rabbit has been building nests every spring for more than 1,000 years, proudly filling grass nests with gailyâ€"colored eggs. Through the centuries, the Easter egg has remained a uniâ€" versal symbol of spring. Brightly decorated eggs have been ex changed â€" as Easter â€" greetings since the Middle Ages. By the midâ€"1800‘s, plaques and cards with drawings of eggs beâ€" gan to replace the fragile: eggs themselves. â€" These â€" keepsakes, . many . of them elaborate and prohibitively costly, were the forerunners of modern Easter greeting cards. Among the earliest known | cards were dainty, handâ€"painted | sketches of eggs enwreathed by‘ spmmg flowers. Later designs | from Edwardian England depict | egg¢ with lovable little chicks and â€" ducklings bursting . forth with "Happy Easter!" | Today‘s Easter greetings still offer the traditional floral patâ€" terns _ and _ brightly â€" decorated eggs. Â¥ven the humorous Eastér cards feature egg designs. And so it goes on year after year, the happy combination of the Easter bunny and Easter eggs, brings joy to children everywhere. 00 & The cards of Easter are as varied today as they could posâ€" sibly be with illustrations of chicks and lambs and other aniâ€" mals. The central theme of bunâ€" nies and eggs, so dear to the hearts of children,. remains the most popylar combination of all and likpl;’ will for many years to come. # FLORIST 43549 Eglinton Ave. W. w â€" Phone 769â€"5758 WANTED Call Our Circulation Department Due to expansion, we require carriers in the Downsview area. As a start on its reference collection the Metro library board last year received over 506,000 books and 7,500 sound recordings from the city library system. â€" The Metro board has indicated that it does not expect to give financial support to regional library facilities in the boroughs this year. The main problem will be taking operational control of the city‘s reference library collection. Metro library board agrees that there is an eventual need by all Metro area library boards for a centralized technical service centre. (The sixth deleâ€" gate was chosen by the Young Liberals). This was an honor, and yes, a great responsibility. _ As the time passed along last Saturday, with the results of the ballots being announced regularâ€" ly, the responsibility seemed to weigh even heavier. There I was. along with more than 2,400 other delegates, being given the privilâ€" ege to help decide who was the man to be the next Prime Miniâ€" ster of Canada. Before leaving for Ottawa, I had done my homework. I had read the material supplied to be by the candidates, done my best to meet as many of them as possible, and made my own assâ€" essment. I had decided that no press coverage, public enthusâ€" iasm, or‘ dealing on the floor of the convention was going to sway me â€" and it didn‘t. I also beâ€" lieve that a large majority of the delegates did just this, whether they voted for Trudeau, Winters, Helleyer, Turner, Greene, etc. To me, at any rate, it seemed through the latter part of last week (the Liberals), were having a friendly family squabble in public, and that no matter what the outcome of choosing a head of the family, it is a family. That this can be successfully done in public in a democratic way, is a binding force for both the Libâ€" erals and for every citizen in Canada. Pierre Elliott Trudeau is now the head of the family of Canâ€" ada, As in any family there will be differences of opinion, but I am sure that if every member of the family of Canada will work together, through their elected officials, Canada will be an even better place in which to live. Women played a greater part in this convention than any other before it. At least 20 p.c. of the riding delegates had to be women, and the percentage, in the final analysis, was even greater. In this convention, women were not just utilized to do the work such as mailing out brochures, and working in the offices. Those that were, were not necessarily delegates, but they were part of the hard working core of the riding associations, working to help their man get elected. If you let it be, the three days of the Convention can, be a rat race, going from one sotial funcâ€" tion to another, bucking monuâ€" mental crowds, to meet the canâ€" didates. and perhaps. if you are lucky, to partake of a little reâ€" freshment. It would be absoluteâ€" ly impossible to get to all the functions to which you are in vited, and to do the job for Toronto Alderman Mary Temâ€" ple questioned York Mayor Jack Mould last week during a Metro Councik session about the possiâ€" bility that York will eventually join up with the city of Toronto. "I think that is wishful think« ing," said Mr. Mould when Mrs. Temple predicted that the merâ€" ger would take place within three years. York has never forâ€" gotten that at one time it offered to join the city and the city turned its back on the municipalâ€" ity. York is quite prepared to proceed its own way, says its civic leaders. The wives of the various canâ€" didates, all did their work for their men with grace and good taste in entertaining the women delegates. As each woman deleâ€" gate received so many invitations, only one or two could be singled out to attend. I chose to help Mrs. Winters entertain at her continental | breakfast for the ladies in the Chateau Laurier Hoâ€" tel. As I had received an invitaâ€" tion prior to my leaving for Otâ€" tawa from Mrs. J. J. Greene, I accepted her gracious invitation to attend a tea in the Parliamenâ€" tary Dining Room of the Parliaâ€" ment Buildings. Mrs. Winters was joined in the receiving line by her daughter and daughterâ€"inâ€"law, while Mrs. Greene had her three very charmâ€" ing daughters assist her in greetâ€" ing the guests. These two social functions (and | I am assured that the other wives; equalled their efforts), gave the women of the Liberal Party in | Canada a great opportunity to sit down and chat with other deleâ€"| gates from British Columbia, the | Yukon, to Newfoundland. In proportion, as many women as men were taking part in the committee meeting, planâ€" ning strategy, and working on the floor during the actual.voting.
