The _ only other _ game scheduled _ between _ American Standard and Pittsburgh was called off when no umpire appeared for the game at Rotary Park on Wednesday. In upcoming games, Trane reâ€" turns to action tonight after a twoâ€"week layoff with several games to make up. Pittsburgh Paints also are a few games beâ€" hind the rest of the clubs, as also are Kingsway. Most of the remaining teams have two or three games left. The lone game played in the last reporting week in the Lakeâ€" shore Industrial Softball League gave notice that the lastâ€"place team, Kingsway Lumber, may yet have to be reckoned with come playoff time. The tailend club are only one half a game behind the last playoff spot and their 1â€"0 win over Silverwoods at Coronation Park on Thursday was against the secondâ€"place club. We can proudly boast of the greatest park system in the world;â€"97 in all, containing 16,000 campsites, and embracing more than eight million acres. Despite the rise in camping rates outdoor enthusiasts are flocking to Ontario‘s parks. Last year more than ten million peol;)lc enjoyed camping, hiking, swimming, boating, fishing and nature study within their borders. As yet there are no facilities in this area which, of course, is known as Polar Bear Park, and is accessible only by aircraft. Its wildlife population consists of more polar bears per square mile than are found in the Arctic. Within its boundaries you may find caribou, seal, walrus and Arctic fox. And it is the breeding ground for thousands of blue and snow geese. One of our latest, the largest Provincial Park in Canada, has Polar bears! Its establishâ€" ment has recently been announced by Hon. Rene Brunelle, Minister of Lands and Forests. Includingooalmo-t all of Missinaibi Lake, with a water area of 17, acres (and excellent walleye fishing), Missinaibi Provincial Park contains three separate wilderâ€" ness areas, set aside under the Wilderness Areas Act. Thx are Fairy Point, established to preserve an area wi historically valuable Indian pictographs; Old Brunswick House, the site of an historic Hudson‘s Bay Company post ; and Whitefish Falls, an outstanding scenic area on the Little Missinaibi river. An unearned run in the second inning proved the extent of the scoring when Ron Roy came home on a throwing error. Roy had walked and gone to third on Pop‘s single. He scored when the error was made on a pickâ€" off attempt at second base. Ian Cruickshank was the losâ€" ing pitcher, despite a neat threeâ€" hitter. He fanned eight batters and walked four. Two of the hits were gathered by Pop. Kingsway to the league‘s second shutout of the season. Much work has to be done to develop and improve facilities for campers. This year a boat launching ramp is in the making. Sanitary facilities and a safe water supply are being developed. Ed Pop allowed four hits while walking a pair and fanning ten as he won back some of his earlyâ€"season form. This was the second win in a row for Kingsâ€" way. What about lifejackets? Make a point of always wearing one in the boat. If an accident happens and you are suddenly treading water you have some chance of staying afloat until help arrives. Up near Parry Sound, Killbear Provincial Park, on Georgian Bay, can absorb 4,000 campers at one time. On Civic holiday weekend, last year, 5,000 campers managed to have a good time within its boundaries without stepping on each other‘s toes. It has also been said that a logger killed a bear on a raft of logs just off the Point, and the story has even been twisted around the other way with the result that the bear killed the logger. Killbear Park acquired its name, so they say, from the fact that Indians once killed bears that were swimming the narrows separating the Point from Parry Island Indian Reserve. Regardless of how it got its name, Killbear Park is becoming increasingly popular because of its excellent ® GOLD CROSS * SHENANIGANS & COBBIES n subway A scorcher in dandyoppln Red with black trim. 390, 2â€"barre! At least the publicity burbs could read that way as both Mississauga and Brooklin have adopted Indianâ€"like nicknames. Mississauga decided to call themselves the Braves this year after being known as Sailors for several years. Brooklin has had the nickname ‘Red Men‘ for some time. The occasion is the second game of the Ontario Lacrosse Association Sr. A. semiâ€"finals which, if the series goes the route, will extend to seven games, The first game was played earlier this week and the third game will be at Brookâ€" lin tomorrow night, Just to keep the pot boiling, the fourth game is back at Huron Park Arena Tuesday night, the fifth, if necessary at Brooklin next Wednesday and the sixth could be at Huron Park next weekend. The other semiâ€"final bracket has pitted Bramalea Excelsiors and Hastings Legionnaires against each other. This pairing plays tonight in Brampton, Saturday at Hastings and Monâ€" day at Brampton. The odds on choice to win the Ontario marbles in Brooklin, however, Mississauga coach Ed Tomchishen was heartened by the fact that his Braves defeated Brooklin in the final home game of the regular schedule. Joe had figured he was content to enjoy his retireâ€" ment after more years than he cares to remember as goalie for several junior and senior clubs, but such was not to be. Despite all their difficuties in drawing fans in Montreal, the Canadiens of the National Laâ€" crosse Association are slowly creeping up to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the battle for third place. Last Sunday‘s 12â€"11 win over the Leafs in Montreal moved them into a pogition just two points behind the faltering Leafs. Tonight, Peterborough invades Montreal after doing battle with Toronto last night. Playing coach Bill Castator hopes the Petes might be tired and can catch them on the rebound. On warm, moonlit summer cvonm:l many as 1,000 persons are treated to the eerie trem: howls of timber wolves,â€"and the naturalists, who do a good job of calling and answering them.. _ _ _ _ _ So, you see, we live in a fabulous province,â€"one which contains outdoor areas to suit almost anybody. Best of all, we are conserving those areas in order that we, and those who follow us, may always enjoy them. _ s Unfortunately, a few thoughtless and unappreciative persons find it amusing to destroy or deface installations and other park property. They are known as vandals, a senseless breed who must be held in check if we are to continue to enjoy the beauty of Ontario. _ _ A recent Lands and Forests bulletin stated that "One of the most senseless occurrences was the removal of marker pins on plantation survival plots in the Department of Lands and Forests‘ Geraldton district. _ The Leafs have a week off following last night‘s game as they prepare for the invasion of Portland Adanacs into Maple Leaf Gardens next Wednesday. The westernâ€" invaders have a tough schedule. They play at Montreal Sunday, at Detroit next Tuesday and Peterborough game at the top of the 7th innâ€" ings. Robert Clayton playing short stop did a good job and batted extremely well for his team. , Ferguson Quality To assess survival, growth and general efficiency of tree planting projects, study plots are established in every plantation set out to regenerate the forest. One hundred trees are marked at random with heavy wire pins. These are checked periodically and the data obtained is assessed by the local management forester and also becomes part of a provinceâ€"wide study of plantations.
