THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1969 This family service centre serves the Borough of York and the part of North York lying west of Keele, and, last year, 1,050 families used its counselling services. The majority of _ these families asked for help around marital problems, but many others presented problems involving conflict between parent and child a n d o ther f{amily relationships. _ The agency has spent about $55,000 from its capital funds to renovate and _ to â€" refurnish _ the sprawling old building it has owned and occupied since 1942. The purpose is to bring it more in line with the _ requirements of _ a modern centre for family and _ group _ counselling, while, at the same time, making it a suitable base from which to pioneer‘new and creative approaches that will improve and enrich the lives of people in the c o m m unity . T he renovations _ also â€" include play areas for children, better soundproofing of offices to ensure absolute privacy for those who seek counselling, â€" and _ better facilities for social work students who take field training there. Along with its new look; the name of the office has been changed from Si. Clairâ€"York to Northwestern District Office. The staff take a keen and active interest in community projects, and, currently, Mr. Farquharson is involved in plans for the proposed establishment of an information centre for new Canadians, and on a study to determine the social needs of a group of residents in a specially selected neighbourhood. If considered â€" advisable, the Northwestern _ office will operate a community information center for these residents. The Family Service Association receives approximately 90 per cent of its operational costs from the United Appeal, and service projects. A group of young mothers, for example, meet regularly for family life discussions. At the same _ time, their children are taken care of at a nursery school which is staffed by both paid and volunatry help from the community.
