With a gentle crash North York Mayor Jim Service fell out of his council chair With a somewhat embarrassed expression the mayor climbed back into his chair to continue listening to the debate. He was not injured and he received smiles all around from his council associates. Before the long debate, which was adjourned at one period for three hours so council members could catch up on their social engagements, the supporters of the Spadina speed up considered that they held a three vote majority over those who were against the idea. They had under estimated. The Spadina route won out by a nine vote majority even with three council members absent. It was York Controller Wes Boddington who moved in council that the vote be taken on the Spadina issue. He did so while six other council members were listed to speak on the issue. He was accused by some city members of trying to apply closure. Their objections were discarded. Mayor Jack Mould of York admitted he was supporting the Spadina route. because earth from this project was needed to help extend Eglinton Ave. West over the Humber River. 6 York Controllee Philip White emphasized the need of the Spadina expressway to attract potential redevelopment from which Metro, York and North York would obtain added tax dollars. Mr. White told the city members at Metro that he "was shocked and dismayed" at their attitude in opposing the Spadina route just because they hadn‘t seen some design plans. Metro had sent a complete set of functional plans, showing the route, to the city for study. j Metro officials tried to explain that design plans are used by the companies that are building a civic project and are in such detail that it would only give the city politicians a big headache in trying to read them. "I think the concern of the city over the Spadina project _ has reached * exaggerated proportions", he declared. The York controller was invited by city controller Margaret Campbell to attend some city meetings where home owners and business men have a fear of the expressway route. The TTC has suggested.to the York Board of Education that it might try.the use of charter bus service to transport students who live some distance from schools. The suggestion came after a second try by the school board to get the TTC to reâ€"route some Jane St. â€"buses to serve children who attend Rockcliffe Senior and Franke Oke School. The TTC has offered assistance in establishing the charter service for the York board which would have to be paid for out of the school budget. The TTC does not want to reâ€"route any part of the Jane bus service. The TTC says any diversion or rerouting on the Jane line would seriously inconvenience regular passengers.
