TRUSTEE BLACKBALLS RETARDED SCHOOL The disparaging remarks regarding Haney Avenue School for retarded children, made by a York Board of Education Trustee, at a recent York Planning Board meeting, has raised the ire of ratepayers and parents who helped to establish the school. Bob Hewitt, of Foxwell Avenue, tells us that when no help was forthcoming from the York Board of Education or Council, a generous benefactor, George Webster, donated the Haney Avenue home. With the help of interested ratepayers set up a school which not only educated, but gave these children some meaning to their lives. A York Board of Education Trustee called the Haney Avenue Retarded School a disgrace to any generation. This was a remark that must burn into the very hearts of the parents of retarded children who banded together some years ago in a desperate effort to provide some kind of education for their children. Secretary of York Federation of Ratepayers, Denis Shute, reminded the board that the province will be taking 25 acres of, land on each side of the creek through the park for the Highway extension. - 762-0916 N,':l,
