On CBCâ€" TV, the audience for the 4:00 p.m. time slot tripled in less than five weeks, and this fall it was scheduled on Saturâ€" days as well to satisfy viewers unable to watch in the weekday period. A new television series begins January on the network. Kerr has had phenomenal success with his television series on cuisine. It‘s been seen in New Zealand, Australia, Britain, Canada, 4 Scheduled early in the day, the series promises to be the answer to the housewives‘ prayer: what to have for dinner. Obviously, in a short fiveâ€"minute program Kerr cannot go through the whole process of preparing an exotic recipe the way he does on the visual medium. But he does offer an endless variety of suggestions on simplified preparation and cooking methods â€" how to fillet a fish, for example. And what to do about adding bicarb of soda to cooking vegetables to make them look greener (don‘t). The guru of gastronomy, Graham Kerr, will soon be galloping along the air waves in a new series of helpful cooking hints. The Galloping Gourmet debuts on the CBC radio network January 5 and will be heard Monday through Friday at 9:10 a.m. EST. As a preamble to the ‘meat‘ of the matter, he‘ll launch into an amusing anecdote (which, often as not, is totally irrelevant). Kerr‘s philosophy is: food should be fun, and he‘ll go to any length to prove it. 1905 Now 35, Kerr was born in London of Scottish parents. He acquired his love of cooking at his father‘s elbow ; his father was a hotel supervisor. Hotel training began at 15. During his stint with the National Service he was promoted to captain in charge of catering for an army emergency reserve unit, an unlikely beginning for a gourmet cook.
