PAGE i These words were written at the Ontario Safety League offices two days before Christ- mas, 1969. By the time you read them in the opening days of 1970, a new recreational fatality record will have been established in Ontario unless snowmobilers suddenly wake up and realize that operation of their machines on public thoroughfares heavily travelled by motor vehicles is suicidal. The fact that such travel is legalized in many instances by provincial laws has nothing to do with it; this is a personal matter of life and death. Statistics proved during the winter of 1969, and are again emphasizing the fact as we enter the current winter season, that the greatest hazards for snowmobilers in Ontario are found on public thoroughfares where there can be a dangerous conflict with motor vehicles. Here we go again, the same old story as last winter; five snowmobile deaths caused by collision with motor vehicles on public thorough- fares in Ontario and the season is barely that many weeks old: Looking ahead to Metro Affairs ' The Ontario Safety League is not against the use of snowmobiles. On the contrary, the League has again and again promoted this new and excellent recreation with helpful aids to the smowmobiling public such as their publication, "Snowmobiling, Where to Go in Ontario", and the production of thousands of snowmobile trail markers urgently needed by resorts and snowmobile clubs to safely mark the trails that are being developed in the vacation areas. This is an excellent sport and a real boon to outdoors- minded people and the vacation areas of the province. T But the League strongly urges snowmobile owners to keep these machines where they belong, on snow, not on the icy and hard-packed surfaces of heavily travelled roadways where they become unmanageable. , York Controllers Douglas Saunders and James Trimbee will be two new representatives' from the borough at Metro assigned to help solve some of these problems. LoMaitn - Leigh Siegfried Telephone 241-521 1 An open letter to the Hon. Robert Stanfield and to the Hon. John Robarts, Progressive Conservative Party leaders. Honourable Sits: The September defeat of Progressive Conservative candidate, Walden Allen in Middlesex South was most lamentable, yet predictable. The reasons, to me, are most obvious, and I have stated that the Progressive Conservative Party would continue losing further percentage points of the popular vote from election to election unless we revert to the philosophy and prin- ciples upon which the Party was founded. Now, Honourable Sirs, I would ask you this valid question - WHERE HAS MY POLITICAL PARTY GONE? LETTERS TO THE EDITOR As a group, we Progressive Conservatives are using an old and honourable name. We claim to be representatives of the Conservative Party. Are we worthy to bear this name? Do our members and adherents fully understand the tradition of the Con- servative Party?' How many of us are familiar with Edmund Burke, the father of modern Conservatism? I ask these questions because today I see no resemblance between the Conservative Party of yesteryear and the P. C. Party of today. Oh! I know times change and, now we live in a socalled modern society, but the essence of conservatism is that some things which are right-never change'. Edmund Burke. expressed it as, "preser- vation of the ancient moral tradition of humanity and respect for the wisdm of our ancestors". minating the expressway at either St. Clair or Eglinton. Metro Roads and Traffic Department reports the only place' that the expressway could logically be halted short of its Bloor St. objective is around Davenport Rd. I Metro Toronto has over 700,000 registered motor vehicles, one vehicle for every 2.6 persons. This is one of the highest car ownership ratio's in North America. Registration of motor vehicles goes up an average of four per cent yearly. The north-west area is without an ex- pressway. The north-east area has the Don Valley Parkway. The-west the Queen Elizabeth Highway. The east Kingston Rd, and No. 2 High- way. York and North Y0{k traffic officials as well as the Toronto Transi Commission are well aware of the traffic congestion on Bathurst, Dufferin and Jane Streets. Edmund Burke also said: a. The only true equality is moral equality. b. Tradition provides a check upon man's emotional impulses. c. Property and freedom are inseparable - economic levelling is not economic progress. d. Economics and morals are one inseparable body of York Mayor Philip White coniends' that to stop the Spadina at Eglinton could create serious traffic problems. Socialistic conservatives? mavesronuum e. Society longs for leadership. f. Either order in the world is real, or chaos results. How many Progressive Conservative members believe and hold these truths? Why is it that so many now: - a. Place a higher value on economic than moral equality? b. See around us all kinds of signs that man's emotional impulses have replaced traditional behaviour? c. Note that Government now takes 50 percent of our property (earnings) in direct and hidden taxes and therefore our freedom from us? d. Watch appalled as most Governments do what is politically expedient instead of what is morally and ethically right in order to stay in, or gain, power? e. Serarch unsuccessfully for strong leadership in Canada based on sound moral and economic principles? f. Find, in the world, and, in particular Canda, that the people are not further removed from chaos than our forefathers? Pointed questions Honourable Mrs, but if we claim allegience to the Conservative Party then we have a duty and a respon- sibility to know the answers. As we look over the political spectrum it would appear that the only group to hold to tradition is the N.D.P. who believe what Karl Marx told them _ to believe. In advocating the fullest measure of Socialism they do not believe in property rights or the sovereignty of the individual with his freedom of choice. Their idea of Statism reverses the proper order with the State being Master and the citizens the Ser- vants. For the RC. Partyto adopt Socialistic ideology and translate this into policy and-or legislation is utter folly and we should now note that we are reaping a large crop of disenchanted traditional Tories. I believe that Premier Bennett suc- cintly and successfully stated the real issue here in Canada - "tree enterprise or socialism". Politicians who claim to be Conservatives or Liberals are frequently advocating. the planks from platforms selected by the socialists. Have we not been cognizant of the fact that the C.C.F. and N.D.P. platforms have never gained public favour at the national level and therefore the N.D.P. could never implement their national party platform? The most astounding fact to true Conservatives (both big and small c conservatives) is that Conservative and Liberal governments bet- ween them have im- plemented many socialistic planks. Why? Here's an answer. 'Economie illiteracy!’ - a lack of public understanding of how our economy works; a weakness in human nature that seeks something for nothing; a misconception that it is morally right to create equality by taking from some to give to others: "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need". Marxism at its worst. Since this then is socialist philosophy why then have these trends not been adamantly opposed within the P. C. Party? Have the leaders gone along believing in the expediency that this buys votes? That would be a poor excuse indeed for at the mtional level we know that it simply does not work. The voting. public is becoming less willing to buy what we have, to offer. True, in On- tario up until latter years we have had more success but Mr. Robarts you must seriously consider what you will offer as your next provincial platform, what viable alternatives to galloping socialism have you in mind to win back the traditional Conservative supporters? n I, and a rapidly growing group of big C and small c Conservatives believe that the people are entitled to a clear choice of options. A true, free-enterprise plat- form vs. a socialistic plat- form. Have you the courage KIPLING COLLEGIATE TICKETS $1.25 (a. A morally economically sound platform aimed at a reduction in taxes would be happily received and the P.C.s held high in esteem. Tell it as it should be Mr. Stanfield! Tell it as it should be Mr. Robarts! Count on me to lead in a programme of this kind but many of us must beg off when asked to support socialism under the Progressive Conservative banner. We are looking to you for leadership. Please don't disappoint us. Mr. Stafield, Mr. Robarts, if it is the fear of an out and out socialist victory leading to the worst possible economic catastrophe our country has ever seen, then why don't we start a self- educating programme for all those who bear that worthy name, "Conservative" and re-learn true conservative philosophy and principles. Let's educate the general public by teaching the basic economic facts of life. Overcome economic illiteracy, provide sound, moral conservative leadership based on the sovereignty of the in- dividual. Offer to the elec- torate a clear choice of options - 'Free enterprise or socialism' and once again the response will be such that you both will have the privilege of governing the people. Socialism will be rejected when the clarion call of freedom is proclaimed just as in the province of British Columbia. The opinion polls I conduct month.immontlrout in my office attest to the fact that the federal party has again lost thousands of traditional supporters. Your stand, Mr. Stanfield in supporting the Government's 'Omnibus Bill' cost us dearly. Many lifelong Tories are telling me that they must re- examine their loyalties and are casting around looking for that strong, moral leadership; wherever it may be found in Canada today. Yours sincerely, Norman Gunn, C.D., D.P.M. Queen's Drive, Weston.
