In 1972, Garty G. Babâ€" cock, intended to embark upon a teaching career, but lost his life in an attempt to save two boys whose canoe had capsized in the Humber River. In recogniâ€" tion of his bravery and in honour of his memory, he was awarded the ‘Star of Courage‘. Further, the Borough of York placed a plaque comâ€" memorating Garry‘s action at Cruickshank Park in Weston. To further honour Garry, the "Garry Babâ€" cock Memorial Award" has been established. The award will be presented annually, in perpetuity, to a graduating student of York Memorial Collegiate Institute (Garry‘s former high school) who will be continuing his education at some postâ€"secondary instiâ€" tution. Candidates for the award must possess certain characteristics which exemplify Garry and the selection will be made by the Principal of York Memorial Collegiate Instiâ€" tute, the Guidance Head, the Physical Education Head and the Committtee, in conjunction with one another. The amount of the award will be determined by the annual interest genâ€" erated by the principal.
