He feels that the Tower is the ideal place to live as it is built next door to the church and has very friendly residents. Mr. Sparling enjoys the fellowâ€" ship of the residents as well as the organized programs and sports conducted there. Mr. Sparling was born on December 27, 1890 in Teaswater, Ontario. He was the fourth of six sons. His father was a Methodist Minister. Because of his father‘s commitments to the various churches Mr. Sparling was moved from school to school during his elementary education. He graduated from High School in Simcoe, Ontario. Mr. Sparling then entered the University of Toronto and graduated in 1909 with a B.A.Sc. in Electrical Engineering. All through the years Mr. Sparling was a very close friend of Dr. Charles Best, the coâ€" discoverer of insulin for the diabetics. by Ruth Russell I would like you to meet Mr. Morley W. Sparling. Tickets available from: Mario Zuccaro......851â€" 3418, Maurizio Cochi...... 653â€"7006. _ _Morley Sparling tells me that there are some two million retired senior citiâ€" zens in Canada and most with a wealth of knowledge in different fields of the world who could donate some of their time, knowlâ€" edge and experience workâ€" ing as volunteer lay assistants in the schools in Canada. He feels that to retire and do nothing is not Working in the school with the children Mr. Spaâ€" rling finds most rewarding. he has no personal ties in Toronto, his son lives in Montreal and his daughter in Niagara Falls. Mr. Spaâ€" rling is very proud of the fact that he has four beauâ€" tiful grandchildren and four darling greatâ€" grandchildren. . _ At 8 o‘clock in the mornâ€" ing, pretty well five days a week, you can find Mr. Sparling arriving at the school. He is a volunteer lay assistant in the Indusâ€" trial arts Room in Fairâ€" bank Senior. He enjoys being with the young peoâ€" ple and is of great assistâ€" ance to Mr. Andy VanRenssen, the Indusâ€" trial Arts teacher, and the students. Mr. Sparling brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience in woodâ€" working. He has owned an Island in Haliburton for the past 40 years where he has a small workworking shop just for a hobby. The shop is adjacent to his summer home. He has worked on several projects in the shop over the years one of which was to build all the furniture for the cottage. Before Mrs. Sparling passed away they travelled extensively. To celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniâ€" versary the Sparling‘s spent 4 months touring Europe. Mr. Sparling told us of their trip down the Rhine River on board ship, from Basle to Rotterdam and how there is a milepost every mile of the way and their trip through the black forest and how the menu of the day was made up of the products of the country which they were passing through. During the 4 months Mr. Sparling took 1600 pictures of their trip In 1912 Mr. Sparling went to work with the firm of Smith, Carey and Chase, a company who had the franchise for Proâ€" vincial Hydro at that time. Mr. Sparling related as to how the power plants were built on the Trent River and the many obstacles they had to overcome as there was not pattern to follow being the pioneers of hydro. Mr. Sparling told of the ice in the river and how the waterâ€"wheels had to be deâ€"watered and how in the first plant to be built chunks of concrete got into the plant operation and how he had to dress in a diving suit and go underâ€" water to see the extent of the damage. o Over the years Mr. Spaâ€" rling has spent 50 years as a Rotarian. His 50 years have been spent with the Forest Hill Rotary Club of Toronto. He was the second president of the club. He has been honoured by his colleagues by being made a "Paul Harris Fellow", one of the highest honours which can be bestowed upon a rotarian. The enrichment proâ€" gram students sat in with me while I interviewed Mr. Sparling and we all sat spellbound while Mr. Spaâ€" rling shared with us some of his work experiences and fascinating stories of his world travels. a good nor healthy thing to do. Even though Mr. Spaâ€" rling is in his 90th year he is quite physically fit and very mentally alert. He attributes his longevity to a life of a well balanced diet, no smoking and a limited amount of liquor intake. Mr. Sparling shared with the **Enrichment Class" and I his philoâ€" sophy of life. He feels you should have "A balance between relaxation and interesting activities in order to be happy and conâ€" tented without pressuring factors". In a life with conâ€" stant change people have to make their own misâ€" takes in order to benefit in having a happy and fulfilâ€" ling life. Mr. Sparling feels we should all have an interâ€" est in a variety of things as it helps to keep you alive and fit. He feels it is a great tonic. He loves to get up to his Island and just live with nature. With so many of the stuâ€" dents in Fairbank Senior SPARLING The Sparling‘s took a motor trip through Westâ€" ern Canada and Mr. Spaâ€" rling can tell some fascinating stories about motoring through Yellowâ€" stone Park and the many Parks on the way. which are a constant reminder to him of so many stories to tell.
