Jade left her job as receptionist at a Malton aircraft plant on May 15th and eleven days later, she had not only been in Italy for a ternational and had to leave for Naples via the national right away. Fortunately this sweet customs guy gave me a taxi chit and so I was away. I changed $10 into 6.218 lire and conducted it all in Italian â€" what do you think of that! It‘s 24 hours since I left Malton and I‘m sitting on the balcony to my bedroom, overlooking the Bay of Naples. It‘s beautiful but as I‘ve had no sleep, I‘m too woozy to appreciate it. I had a very good flight over and the food was terrific, but of course since Rome is five hours ahead of Canada. we were Raving breakfast on the plane at 1 a.m., having had supper at 7 p.m. I flirted with the customs official at Rome Airport and he didn‘t even ask me to open my bags. But let‘s go back a bit; after her engagement last summer and subsequent disâ€"engagement at Christmas, she stayed on in her job here in order to raise money for her next safari. She didn‘t know wheré she was going, only that she would be off again as soon as she had accumulated some money. Because her exâ€"fiance was of Italian descent, Jade and I had been learning Italian too; after she broke her engagement, she continued with the Italian lessons and gradually the idea of going to Italy took shape. The fact that her Ttalian teacher had been born in Italy of English parents and was always talking about the glories of Rome, etc., was certainly a help. She decided to go to Rome and try to get work there and though I was a little apprehensive about her arriving in the bottomâ€" pinching capital of the old world alone and with only textbook Italian, I kept my mouth shut (which is one thing that motherhood should teach you). Then, her teacher‘s elderly parents in Naples wrote and generously offered Jade their hospitality for a week or so, until she got settled. So this was how, on May 19th, Jade left Malton Airport with tears in her eyes and $200, She wanted to go to Italy, but as usual at the last minute she becomes a sentimental slob and can hardly bear to leave the linedâ€"up family. The $200 was her capital â€" she had to get a job before she spent it all Less than 24 hours later, she was in Naples. I‘ve edited some of her letters home and thought you might be interested in her reacâ€" tions to Italy: Dearest Family: Local Dancers Swing & Whirl At Square Dance Convention Drive Caretully Oh, Mother, you‘d never do in Naples.
