MR. AND MRS. DAVID J. DAVIDGE of Weston are ploased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Shirley, to Peter Allerston, son of Mr. & Mrs. R.E. Allerston, Timmins. The wedding ‘cerâ€" emony will. take place at Westminster United Church, Saturday, August 1. The young couple will reside in Cooksville. Both Basil and Ken ‘have found Canadian audiences to be quite shy. "Maybe its because of the law â€" â€" they have been Saturday night at the pub is known as ‘English Night‘. Ken explains the reason for this is that, "the English night out is primarily Saturday night; this would follow anywhere in Engâ€" land except London, where it is the same in Canada â€" every night." Their paths did cross in a Toronto film lab about six years a70. It was only after six months of friendship that Ken Cordwell and Basil Sherwood discovered their mutual interest in enterâ€" taining. After some contemplaâ€" tion, they decided to become a duo; they were to be known as "The Pearly Kings". These two men are now apâ€" pearing in the Olde English Pub of the Skyline Hotel â€" much to the enjoyment of many an audâ€" ience. Unless you‘re amongst the early comers, you‘ll find it difficult to obtain a seat. The pianist and the drummer . conduct a singâ€"along in the pub six nights a week. Anyone seeâ€" ing them for the first time is immediately caught up in the spontaneous audience participaâ€" tion. The crowds sing out loud | and clear and occasionally even jJump up and down and in genâ€" eral have a tremendous time of | it. | WILLIAM HOLDEN, Aleec Guinness and Jackâ€" Hawkins star in Sam Spiegel‘s "THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI‘, the Cinemascope â€"Techniâ€" color drama which won seven Academy Awards including that for "best picture". "Kwai" was made by Spiegel and director David Lean, makers of the spectacular "Lawrence of Arabia". Starts soon at the Odeon Biltmore Theatre Weston â€" 1831 Weston Road. the father had successfully coaxâ€" ed his fourteen year old son, Ken Cordwell, to entertain the gathering at the pub. While Ken Cordwell continuâ€" ed to push the ivories, there passed through his home town a duo act under the name of "Sherwood and Forest." Al though Ken never met or saw the drummer of that duo, Basil Sherwood, their paths were to cross in a land far away from England in years to come ~ Canâ€" [ ada. COMING SOONn o TO THE ODEON BILTMORE THEATRE / WESTON 1831 WESTON RD. CH. li®2 Many years kgo in England, a father came rushing home with a great problem. Everywhere one goes to drink, there shoul1 be two bars; one with entertainâ€" ment, one without: if you don‘t want to sing, you can relax in peace. Personally, I wouldn‘t go to a place without music, as music creates an atmosphere; Ken mentioned that although the singâ€"along has only been popularized over here within the last few years by Mitch Milâ€" ler, it has been going on in Eurâ€" ope for hundreds of years. He feels that people like to singâ€" along because it‘s a release of some of the inhibitions of the world today. He remarked, "It‘s an expression of freedom and it also helps people to know one another." _ Speaking about the differenâ€" ces between Canadian and Britâ€" ish audiences, Ken menticned that the basic differences is in the social habits of the people. "In England, more people go out for their entertainment:; they don‘t have parties at their homes like they d6 here â€" â€" over there, the pub is the place to meet." When asked who their favourâ€" ite musicians were, they both answered, ‘each other‘ They say they haven‘t modeled themselâ€" ves after anyone. Ken says that everything they do is a result of years of ‘messing around‘. Basil puts it down to ‘a warped mind‘. Ken says, "we will continue unâ€" til we make enough to retire." The singâ€"alongsters both enâ€" joy their way of, life. "It‘s strange to an outsider, but it becomes second nature to you. Contrary to popular opinion, you can be very happily marâ€" ried even though your hours are strange," said Ken. brought up not to sing in pub lic", commented Basil. Ken menâ€" tioned that ‘Canadians are simâ€" ply not brought up to enjoy a social drink. Ken feels, however, that more and more Canadians are discovering that they can go out and really enjoy them selves while having a drink. Pygmy Island Come And Bring A Friend!
