Starting tomorrow, 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday games on five gymnasiums will witness 12 gal squads from as far away as Windsor and Montreal performing in the borough. (Full details are to be found elsewhere on these sports pages). - "Noise", she answered; "I'm not making muscles -- I'm simply toning them. This writer couldn't resist asking if she wasn't afraid of building big muscles by her constant puslrups and, lifting of weights. Her-goal, of cohfse, is the Olympics, and coach Miller wouldn't be surprised if she made the team. ' Gymnastics and weight training also keep her busy, but she finds time to take piano lessons, bovql_and_pl§y the, trumpet. - - Although there doesn'fseetttio be a boy friend on the horizon at the present time, she admits to having "a)otpf guys I like as friends." While singing the praises of Pam, we cannot overlook he number of other youngsters who have come along so well as members of York's track club. Seventeen-year-old Mike Swartz, a midget-aged Canadian champion at 800 metres is among these, as is. 18-year-old John Halischuk, for the past three years one of the top runners at the ',1gaitttt's'1it1oe distance. Pam po ts to teammates Debbie Cruikshank and Irene Criag, 440 and sprint runners respectively as being "great! ". The three girls, from what we can gather share thw Spartan stable along with 81 boys, - pretty good odds! Having legs on the short side doesn't seem to bother Pam, and as far as running in the cold weather is concerned, she prefers it to the heat. "It's kind of fun," she replies. None of this comes without training and hard work of course, and Pam, along with fellow Spartans think nothing of a four mile run every 6: 30 of the morning plus a jog down to High Park and return at least three times each week. Add to these fine showings her firsts in 880 and two-mile distances plus a second in the mile run in Toronto track events and her potential as a future Olympic star begins to show. She cap- tured the Central Ontario cross country title then placed second in the 880 distance in CNE 'Open' age group competition. She has also earned the title of Borough of York Athlete of the Year for 1970 - pretty fair sledding for a wee bit of a girl! Now a Grade nine student at York Memorial Collegiate, Pam first became interested in track and field while still a student at Roseland Public School. Her hopes for the future include becoming a gym teacher because "I like working with kids." Starting to run at the age of 10 in middle distance events, she began taking a keen interest in her spot as a Grade 8 student under the tutorage of coach Miller. Some of her first victories included the mile- and-a/ner Condie cross country event where she claimed a first. She equalled this per- formance in the Hamilton Invitational cross country at a mile-and-a-half last June and added the 880 Borough of York school championship soon after. She tied for first slot in the 880 distance while representing her club in Philadelphia. Pam is a member of the York Spartans Track Club, a group formed last June with but eight members that has since grown to 85. Originally coached alone by Peter Miller, a physical education and recreation specialist, the club has since added four physical educational grads who help Miller with the coaching duties. Tippy-toeing it at five-foot-nothing and weighing in at 92 pounds soaking wet, M-year-old Pam Bentley is scheduled to represent our area in the upcoming February 5 Indoor .Games at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens. She'll be sharing the spotlight with some of the world's better athletes, as she performs in either the 880 or the mile run.
