Many If you‘re already talking on the phone you can put the caller on hold by dialing "3", talk to the visitor and open the downstairs door by dialing "6", then return to your first call by dialing "3" again. Bell Canada is offering a new system to apartment developers which allows calls to be taken on any telephone in an apartment when signalled by two distinct rings from a phone in the lobby. â€" Another major attraction at the National Home Show is a series of custom designed model rooms enâ€" titled Decor ‘71. The rooms feature the latest fads, fashions and furnishings from the interior design field. The day is not too distant when you will be answering your doorbell by picking up the telephone, â€" especially if you‘re thinking of moving into one of Toronto‘s new luxury apartments. An efficient production system and large sales volume proves capable of keeping prices low, enabling everyone to furnish a home or apartment to their own taste while enjoying great savings. A feature at this year‘s National Home Show is "Galaxy ‘71", a $25,000 model home geared to the Canadian middleâ€"class income family. "Like clothing it should fit the occupants. People are not meant to be stored in boxâ€"shaped cubicles; families should have the freedom to move from acâ€" tivity to activity â€" from area Established in the Weston area for three years, the Readyfit Furniture showroom, Pellatt Avenue, has an excellent range of readyâ€"toâ€"assemble furniture imported from a Western Europe manufacturing plant. "A house is not merely a background for living, it has a definite influence on the people who live in it," says the 35â€"yearâ€"old Kelman. to area â€" and rot be tyrannized by a:. .utlexible The idea of the utility room where the woman of the believe will substantially reduce building costs this decade, "Galaxy ‘71" was built in five weeks and assembled onâ€"site in the Coliseum in two days. Eight firms have assembled interior settings under the supervision of Mrs. Eva Gordon who came to Canada from Hungary, at the age of 17. She now enjoys a leading position as prominent Toronto architect and color assistant. One of her greatest claims to fame was the role as design coâ€"ordinate for the Vanier Institute and she is currently involved in a commercial â€" residential Readyfit furniture ds, fashions and furnishings There are four doorways leading respectively to the front entrance, _ patio, swimming pool and the service area. The garage area is evident at the front â€" ""people have cars, why hide the fact,‘" Kelman observes. Another interesting area of the home is the family room which is the centre of acâ€" tivity and topped by a skylight. _ To give _ it spaciousness it is without walls and the area is defined instead by a pit. "This material can be more readily molded and will bring bright modern looking furniture into line with _ average _ income budgets," Mrs. Gordon predicts. house can exercise her green thumb and do laundry typifies the humanistic approach to this home design. "Laundry creates warm, humid air that plants thrive on, so why not provide for growing things in the home," he adds. * An advocate of the prinâ€" ciples of world famous arâ€" chitect and designer Le Corbusier she is developing many of his theories in an effort to incorporate a school, theatre, shopping centre, and apartment block within a single, compoundâ€" like structure. Newly developed therâ€" moplastics â€" _ colorful, washable and lower priced â€" are a dominant factor in furniture and furnishings. Mod furniture of acrylic plastic material made its debut in the 1970 Home Show. But acrylics are expensive to shape and last year‘s synâ€" thetic furniture was mainly imported from France and Italy. Consequently it was beyond the price range of most Canadians. Now a heatâ€" formed plastic material (ABS) is being laminated and shaped by Candian furniture makers in a range of bright colored, and woodgrain, chairs, tables and furnishing accessories. The thermoplastics are limited to solid colors. Those who want the transparent seeâ€"through tables, shelving and chairs will still have to turn to acrylics. Much of the new furniture features chrome and metal trim, as Calls from the lobby must also be made one at a time so that an outsider cannot push a row of buttons hoping to be let in without an identity check. Third advantage is the obvious convenience of being able to answer the ‘doorbell‘ from anywhere in an apartment where a telephone is located and admit a visitor. A spokesman for Bell Telephone says one adâ€" vantage is the voice of the visitor is heard more clearly over the telephone than on conventional intercom systems, _ reducing the likelihood of unauthorized persons gaining entry. buildings now under conâ€" struction at Avenue Road and Lonsdale and on St. Clair Avenue West will have the system installed. complex in the Niagara Penninsula. Maria de Nagay, interior designer of the home, has lined the lowered pit with blue shag rugs which rise on the wall a foot and covers a builtâ€"in bench, the only seating unit. In the centre is a round gas barbecue for indoor informal snacking or entertaining, topped by an exhaust hood over it which could double as a piece of modern sculpture. In decorating the model home. Mrs. de Nagay has attempted to "cater to young sophisticates with more taste than money. I like the contemporary look for today‘s style of living," she says, ‘"But I‘ve selected very comfortable furniture to sit on.
