[wash rooma?", asked Alderman Fergus Brown- "Johnny - on - the - spots?" Alderman Gordon Keyes accused the Mayor of waving a tlag in the air. Councillors attacked a motion by Mayor Philip White on the feasibility of Ting tehoorroom partake: We to provide diy care centres last week. “What would they use for Perhaps the motion ap- peared far fetched to the councillors but it brings to light one of today's serious problems in York. Immediately after WWII, an emergency arose with the need for homes for wives and children of soldiers who had been killed. This emergency was solved with the erection of portable "war time" houses. The houses arrived in two parts, pulled on a float. They were placed anywhere land was available, mainly in Having lived in one of these houses, in a park, for 12 years, I can assure the councillors we did not use "Johnny - on - the - spots". Plumbing was installed. Day care was also an immediate need because mothers had to work. Nurserys were opened everywhere. The need overcame the restrictions. Today, the problem is just as severe. More and more mothers are forced to go out to work. Not because they wish to, but because cir- cumstances beyond their control warrant it. Lack of day care centres appears to be mainly because of the restrictions set down by the Day Nur- series Branch of the Ontario Department of Social and Family Services. Theée regulations make it almost impossible to find a suitable location in York for T Guaranteed: _ Deep green grass without deep brown burn Phone 241-9175 i 4000 EGLINTON AVE. Emotionally, children need centres to give them a common ground. Children in centres are much more adjusted to their parents being away from them, than the child placed in a private home with children whose mother doean't have to work. Perhaps more of our councillors should wave flags in the air and attempt to solve this problem. +++ The lane at the rear of Avon Avenue, adjacent to the Borough of York Stadium, will not be closed.
