YORK COQNCJL The issue that catapulted York into the headlines last Christmas arose again as council and the City continue to battle about York's waterlots. Mr. Jim Fleming, 31-year- old-news commentator and television personality has Council recommended last week that provincial authorities be requested to direct the city of Toronto and the borough to negotiate the boundaries of York's water Iota. Last Christmas, the Department of Municipal Affairs confirmed York's right to tax a man-made peninsula extending into Lake Ontario south of Leslie Street assessed at $305,000 tor 122 acres. Probably one of the more concerned members of York council about this issue is Controller Douglas Saun- ders. He believes that the water lots do belong to York and also that they are in- valuable to the borough. York based its right of taxation on a 1903 map and Lord Simcoe's original "The lots put York in a bargaining position for the first time," said Mr. Saunders in an interview last week. "Just this January," Mr. Saunders explained, "the by DawneMoss York South Federal Progressive Conservatives honored immediate past president Wm. G. If you extend a line south from it 1,000 feet to the mouth of the Humber from there as the boundary directions stipulate, and from there to the lighthouse on Toronto Island, then part of the land- fill along the lakeshore and one-half of the proposed Harbor City development fall within York's domain." But Mr. Saunders doesn't really want this land itself for the borough to own and collect taxes on. He feels the land would be of a greater value to the taxpayer of York Last December, the City, provoked by the borough's taxation on assessment applied to radio towers located in the lake southwest of Toronto Islands. Speaking on the increase in salaries for M.P.'s, Mr. Hales said he felt the in- crease should take affect at we, next parliament. "This way you would not be in- creasing your own salary", he stated. Also at stake in the future is the tax money from the proposed Harbour City development, west of Centre Island. According to the borough claims of land rights, half of this development would be in the city and the other half would be on York's landfill territory, was discovered that some stamps were not sold. No stranger to the political field, Mr. Wetherall was elected to the Ajax Town Council in December 1958 and re-elected in every election until his retirement Charging that Con- servative waste and bureaucracy is squandering tax dollars, Mr. Fleming noted that public opinion pools show the Liberals and Conservatives neck and neck; the NDP with less than half the popular support of the Liberals. NORTH YORK However, because of school board spending contracts across Metro, the average homeowner with a Muse assessed at $7,000 will likely pay 812 less in taxes than last year. The borough's fiveman Board of Control approved a 3.4 mill increase in North York's general tax rate on Monday to cover municipal roads, sewers, parks, health, and other borough level services. This is equivalent to a $24 tax increase for the average home owner. Mr. Hall said he thinks nothing can be done about buying York Downs for park this year although there might be some negotiations with owner-developer Max Tanenbaum.
