He‘s busy making York‘s borough buildings a little more attractive by planting a flower arrangement on the front lawn of the offices at 2700 Eglinton Avenue West. The flower arrangement proudly declares that this is indeed the Borough of York. (photo by Colin Bowlden) The Wesleyan Bell Choir‘s reputation has been gained through summer concert tours, two record albums and appearances at A.G.E.H.R. Festivals and other music workshops and clinics. In each of the last two years, it has made more than 50 public appearances for churches, civie organizations, festivals and on radio and television. The Wesleyan Bell Choir of the First United Methodist Church of Lake Charles, La., will present a concert at Beverley â€" Hills United Church on Wednesday, June 16 at 8:15 p.m. Nationally known in the field of handbell music, it is considered one of the finest concert choirs in the country. The group ot ten young people of high school and college age handle a set of 52 handbells with superb skill. The Wesleyan Bell Choir, of the First United Methodist Church, Lake Charles, Louisiana, will be making one of some 50 public appearances across North America at the Beverley Hills United Church on Wednesday, June 16. Kids at the festival last year had lots to enjoy. There were animals, rides, clowns, balloons and music everywhere. This year the festival committee has planned even more for the kids. BJ at Beverley Hills Bell ringers The choir‘s set of 52 bells are made of cast bronze, and have an overâ€"all musical range of 5 octaves. The smallest bell weighs seven ounces and the largest, with a diameter of 11 inches, weighs about 12 pounds. In any given piece, the number of bells played by each ringer varies from two to ten. The ten members of the choir range in age from 17 to 19 and have from one to eight years of experience in the bell choir. The choir is under the leadership of Donald E. Allured, Director of Music and Organist of the Lake Charles church since 1965. He has composed many of the major numbers in the choir‘s repertoire, several of which have been published by Broadman Press in a collection entitled, "Listen to the Bells." Graham Cable plans to have their production crew roving around the grounds filming the events when and where they happen. Follow one of the Graham men and you‘ll probably be where the action is. Keeble Cable plans to station its mobile television unit somewhere near the entrance to the York Festival grounds at 2700 Eglinton Avenue West. If you walk by their white van, look up, you‘ll see yourself on their screen. Two of the cable comâ€" panies in the borough â€" Graham Cable and Keeble Cable â€" will be at the Festival with their cameras. He flew to Ottawa last Thursday to seek such an assurance from Department of Transport officials after studying reports that the federal government is considering the practicality of merging de Havilland and Canadair Ltd. of Montreal. North York Mayor Basil Hall said last week that he is completely satisfied that there is no federal governâ€" ment plan to transfer operations of de Havilland Aircraft of Canada Ltd. from Downsview to Montreal. Everybody attending the York Festival this year will get a chance to see themâ€" selves on television. Many drivers do not know how to set their parking brake correctly, says the Ontario Safety League. The regular service brake should be pressed down firmly at the same time as the parking brake is applied. LCBO said the outdoor beer garden would have to be on a permanent basis. The If this is not done, the travel are of the brake shoes bring the lower tip into contact with the drums first; this leaves the shoes only lightly in contact with the drums, making it easier for the car to roll away, exâ€" pecially backwards. Members of the festival committee were disapâ€" pointed to learn from Chairman Douglas Saunders that the festival would be without the stronger kind of liquid refreshment because the Liquor Control Board of Ontario had denied the Festival committee perâ€" mission to operate an outâ€" door beer garden. This publication with its calendar of "Red Letter" days gives each citizen, both old and young, the opâ€" portunity to participate in a potpourri of summer acâ€" tivities. Tug Wilson, a coâ€"ordinator in the borough‘s parks and recreation _ department, agreed with this suggestion. ‘"‘Certain segments of the population would get uptight if beer were sold at the festival," he said. The York Festival Comâ€" mittee agreed that there would be no beer, but lots of coffee, tea or pop to drink this year. Alderman Cy Townsend said the idea of a beer garden would "Loose its significance if it were inâ€" doors‘" and suggested the committee drop the idea of a beer garden entirely. In its place, he suggested a tea garden, where the borough would receive 25 per cent of the gross. Festival could have had a beer garden temporarily if they elected to place it in There are about 3,000 employees at de Havilland‘s Downsview â€" plant. The company has been located there since 1929. Mr. Hall said that he is still fairly confident that North York will soon be able to develop part of Downsview Airport for prestige offices surrounding a shortâ€"takeâ€"off and ianding airstrip. For two years the borough has been conducting secret negotiations with Ottawa on such a plan which will inâ€" volve reducing the area at presently occupied by the Canadian Armed Forces Base. * this year Hall said that officials with whom he conferred in Ottawa gave him "every assurance" that the federal government will not force de Havilland out of Downsview. At present the federal government is bound by agreement with de Havilland to maintain flying facilities at Downsview. However the major airfield complex is no longer required on its existing scale either for defence or de Havilland use. Mr. Hall said Defence Minister Donald Macdonald told him in Ottawa that he is prepared to consider further talks on the project. The grant, which was announced today by Secretary of State Gerard Pelletier, is an allocation from the 24.7 million dollar budget of the "Opportunities for Youth" summer program. ‘"What‘s happened to the Boy Scouts?" cried Tug Wilson, parks and recreation coâ€"ordinator at last week‘s York Festival Committee meeting. ‘"They never needed all this before. Next things they‘ll be asking for is an electric kettle," Alderman Cv Townsend chimed in. It seems the Boy Scouts wanted to roast a leg of beef at the campsite they will be setting up at the York Festival. The Festival Committee thought this was a great idea until officials from the Boy Scouts inâ€" formed them that this leg would cost $62. The Scouts also want the committee to pay for the charcoal and the fluid and all the other amenities that cook a $62 leg of beef. Another bill the Scouts wanted the borough to take For example, a person with 20â€"20 vision can read highway signs at 400 feet, when stationary. If travelling at 50 m.p.h. he could not make out the signs with the same clarity until he was within 300 feet. A driver‘s perception deteriorates with speed, says the Ontario Safety League. The ability to read road signs decreases by 20 feet for each 10 m.p.h. Last year, rock bands such as the one pictured above were one of the hits of the York Festival. This year, the music at the festival will be just as good. So far, ‘"Pandemonium‘" has agreed to play in the front yard of the borough building, at 2700 Eglinton W., and two other groups will also be hired to play ‘for your dancing pleasure‘. Speed sight 3.75 Boy Scouts vs York Festival Black peoples‘ film study Another idea of the Boy Scouts costing the borough money is to have displays in marquis tents. This requires $50 for tent insurance from the festival funds. "This is ridiculous," fumed _ Deputy Comâ€" missioner of Works Don Oldrieve, "They should set up their crafts mid the trees : . , naturally," The committee decided that the scouts would not have their leg of beef to roast nor would they get their box lunches. The film is designed both in content and approach to satisfy a number of needs. As a documentation of black peoples‘ development in Canadian history, an area sorely neglected in most studies, the film will open with a montage showing blacks in different walks of life and questions on the origins of the many strains of Negro to be found across Canada. A regular check will give protection from mechanical failure of your own vehicle. The best protection from the car behind you is plenty of space from the car in front of you. The group will also study factors in the disunity of black Canadians; cultural differences between groups of different ethnic backgrounds, such as the West Indian and the American Negro, are among the principal causes of lack of common identity. The students involved in this project are from University of Toronto, Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, and York University. They will be totally responsible for the researching writing, filming, and editing of the film, which promises to be unique in its scope and treatment of the black Canadian in the past, present and future of our society.
