President of the Institute of Edible Oil Foods said today that the removal of the 12 per cent federal sales tax on margarine is a victory for the Canadian consumer. He called upon Provincial Premiers to follow the lead of the Federal Government by lifting silly restrictions on the sale of margarine that are against consumers' interests. Margarine is presently colored orange or white by provincial legislation in eight provinces across Canada with the exception of British Columbia and Newfoundland. "As a consequence of the tax repeal", said Mr. Caldwell, "this leaves eight provincial governments in the position of holding out against millions of con- sumers and what they want when they buy margarine." The Institute membership includes farm organizations representing over 100,000 farmers and organizations at all levels of the edible oil industry from basic producers to processers and manufacturers of finished food products including margarine. Margarine manufacturers will immediately pass on the entire 12 per cent federal sales tax saving from the Benson Budget, an annual saving to the consumer of some $7% million. This will result in the lowering of in- store prices by some three to six cents a pound, said Mr. Caldwell. dusu'm milk. "Under such cir- their voices heard and felt. This would be the case in Ontario where an election is presently scheduled for October. Election day should be o day to take the orange out of margarine. "On June" 16, 1971, George McLaughlin. Chairman of the Ontario Milk Marketing Board, told the Ontario ugis1ature's Natural and Physical Resources Com. mittee that Ontario may be forced into a position where it will have to import butter "Provincial governme- nts", said Mr. Caldwell, "should now recognize that like the now defunct federal sales tax the restrictions on coloration provide no demonstrable advantage to the dairy industry tor whose benefit they were imposed. Margarine is a separate and different product from butter in its own right and should be made as attractive in appearance as the housewife and her family of margarine to consumer needs should be permitted.
