On Thursday, October Ttli, Yorkdale Vocational School was the scene of the Amesbury Sports Club's baseball and soccer banquet, 1971 edition. --_ - _ - -_. hunplonshlp Past president Sam Salonia, left. is shown presenting the Parkwood Hills c trophy to NY squirt conch Earl Ynntzl. The lentil team travelled to Ottawa to win this one; Assistant coach Bill Stewart is displaying the winning crest with manager Jerry St. Lauren looking on. The dining hall was filled with ball players in their Sunday best, players in their team sweaters, players in mini skirts, hot pants, midi and maxi fashions. The evening was to honour the boys and girls who par- ticipated in the Amesbury House League and the representative teams in the North York League. The final count of dinner guests was 377 persons who sat_down to a dinner served and prepared by the students of the school. The head table consisted of J. Zimmerman, Peg Grant, D. Simpson, D. French, L. Chevalier, F. Robinson, P. Stewart (North York Parks & Recreation), J. McIndless, S. Salonia, D. Martin and J. Gould plus their escorts. Prior to dinner, the lucky draws were started and, as a result when waitresses came with the meal, the kids had a hard time deciding which to watch, their ticket stubs or the food. Amesbury Sports Club thanks all those who con- tributed draw prizes which ranged all the way from sports shoes, NHL tickets, cheques and hams to dinner for two at a downtown restaurant. After dinner the boys and girls were asked to go intc the gym and sit together with their teams. On entering the gym they came face to face with a table filled with trophies in all shapes and sizes. Amesbury's president, Frank Robinson, made the opening remarks at the trophy presentation and introduced guest speaker for the evening, Mr. John Mclndless, president Western Division Softball League. Much to the delight of the players, his speech was short but on finishing he gave the players something to think about when he said "Winning is important, but how you' win is much more important." Presentation of the trophies, followed along with crests to the winning teams. Really, what makes a night like this worthwhile is when you see a little boy or girl walking out with a trophy grasped tightly in their hands. You know that when may arrived home that trophy was going to occupy the most prominent place in the house, In fact, as one young fellow was leaving I asked to have a look at his trophy but he was not about to let go of it, I could see it but he had to hold it. The whole evening went along smoothly with no hitches and every one there seemed to enjoy themselves. Special credit from the Amesbury organization goes out to Enrico Gilenn and Bill Roesel, the two men who set this evening "up for the players and their parents. As the 1971 ball year has now completed its full circle the Amesbury Sports Club would like to take this op- portunity to thank lentil Plumbing & Heating Ltd, nonlee Martuftteturing Industries, North Park Flu. and A & A Line Markers all sponsors of our North York teams, With your backing and encouragement these teams have had an excellent year.
