They are no longer just the pastel- colored flowers that characterized formal plantings at the turn of the century. Thanks to the constant efforts of hybridizers and growers in Holland, hyacinth colors today are varied and vibrant. The new colors and hardy dependability of these flowers suggest many uses in keeping with contemporary gardens and modes of living. Dutch hyacinths are famous for their perfect symmetrical shapes and unparralleled colors. Other than hues of blue and the soft pastel pinks for which hyacinths have long been loved by gardeners, modern varieties are available in exciting strong red, deep purple, yellow, orange, and a pure white. _ _ Hyacmths deserve a favored place in every fall- planted string garden. Their unmista able fragrance, vivid colors and dignified stately blooms require no attendance other than being set in the ground before the first winter freeze. They are fine planted with other flowers, especially tulips and Friday Oct. 15th-7 pm. to 10 pm. G-COMING EVENTS Sponsored by the Odd Fellows CF. & T. Committee, West Lodge. AT ST. Although a few hyacinths are pleasant when spotted among shrubs and foliage, far more appealing effects can be created by accent planting and mass arrangements. A rectangular flower bed at least two feet wide along an entrance walk, driveway or property line can be transformed into a wide, narcissus and are equally at home in the foreground of evergreens, in open areas or naturalized in rock gardens. Hyacinths need no direct sun and do well in the spring with sunlight that beams through the trees that as yet have no leaves. Where possible, they should be protected from strong spring rains and winds which could harm the dense spikes of the delicate bell-like flowers. Hyacinths are magnificent accent flowers and should be used boldly in clumps of six to twelve plants to highlight an entrance area, set off a garden bed" or to emphasize the approach to a garden path or patio, G-COMING EVENTS Equality of Opportunity Subsidized Mortgage Interest 654-2402 Dignity in Labour bold, swath of color with hyacinths. These same areas can also be treated in dif- ferent geometric patterns. A bright, candy-striped pat- tern can be created by planting diagonal rows of hyacinths. Such a planting might employ the following plan: three rows of deep rich purple hyacinths followed by three rows each of a pure white, and a pink, repeated to the end of the bed with the bulbs set four to five inches apart. When making any pat- terned planting of hyacinths, be sureJo use bulbs of the same size. Hyasmth bulbs vary from 15 cm to 21 cm m circumference. The size of the bulbs will determine flower size. The larger bulbs are best for forcing potted plants indoors. Hyacinths planted in boxes are perfect for patio or terrace. The bulbs are planted exactly as in the garden, since the planter remains outdoors through the winter. The planter should be at least twelve inches deep, with two inches of chipped rock at the bottom for drainage. Plant the bulbs four inches apart and six inches deep, taking care to place then in a straight line. Three or four planters of varying dimensions open new possibilities of color combinations in the spring. The patterns can be changed as the planters are moved out into the garden to fill a gap or occupy a choice spot among other bulb flowers, Anyone who has been unfortunate enough to have his boat capsize during the fall months will sub stantiate the Ontario Safety League's findings that cold water rapidly saps a man's strength. Research on cold water survival points out two important facts; those who stayed with their boat hoping for rescue usually perished from cold and exhaustion, and the fortunate ones who survived the experience were protected by heavy clothing and a floatation device of some kind which allowed them to make their way ashore and find some kind of shelter and warmth. Clothing usually worn by sportsmen in cold weather makes an ideal cold water survival suit if an approved type of lifejacket is strapped over all to compensate for the weight of water-soaked clothing. Experiments by underwater clubs and Armed Forces personnel prove that the protection of such survival clothing will extend the period of activity and consciousness up to two hours even in extremely cold water. This is dependant to some extent on the general health and physical con- dition of the exposed person. It is important to note; the back of the head at the base of the skull is most susceptible to the effects of cold, so it is vital to protect this area with a woolen scarf or parka hood. The high-hazard boating season is with us again, the cold water months when fishermen and hunters in great numbers will be using boats to pursue their favourite sports.
