Chinguacousy hosts coaches clinic Saturday morning October 30 Chinguacousy Figure Skating Club hosted an amateur coaches clinic in the Mayfield Arena in Bramalea. These clinics are held to train skaters 14 years of age and over to help teach and' test at the Gtional skating test program level. Amateur coaches are trained each year at these training clinics by professional figure skaters, this clinic was in charge of Anne Chapman and Marianne Matysek who did a really fine job of pointing out Take a drive out our way this Sunday. After the on-ice program, a lecture period was held were ethics, dress, and professional courtesy was discussed and a question and answer period was held. A film depicting some of the tests and skills, narrated by Sandy Galbraith and Petra Burka and filmed in Ottawa, was shown. To top the program off, each par- ticipant in the clinic received their amateur coaches certificate and crest. Mr. Charlie Cakebread, Director, of national skating tests, who organizes and co- ordinates these clinics is to be commended on his fine work, also the executive members of Chinguacousy Skating Club also for a well run clinic. Mayfield Arena has only been open' for a year and is a recreation centre which not only houses an ice arena, but also a swimming pool and other recreational facilities as well. 's, pi', l _ or l Central The national skating test program has been endorsed by professional figure skaters and hockey players, speed skaters and athletic and recreation directors as an excellent program in basic skating instruction for beginners of all ages. The program has been tailored to appeal to all skating, regardless of whether the beginners interest and is geared to appeal to the very young-two-year-olds right on up to the mature adult. The standard of proficiency for the national tests is kept to a minimum intentionally in order to provide en- couragement to beginners to maintain their interest. Webster School were in for a real treat when opera singer Jan Rubes visited them last Thursday, October 28. This year was rather special because Christine Boesch had joined the Capades so our girls took a special interest. She was a member of Northwestern Figure Skating Club for years those who saw last year's carnival might remember that Chris was Cinderella and did a solo in an all white costume as one of the hi-lights of the show. Although Chris is still in her teens, she is a very mature and accomplished skater. +++ York Public Library has what looks like a very in- teresting film month planned for November. Tonight's program, which starts at 7:30 p.m., in the Main Auditorium at 1745 Eglinton Avenue West, features a = minute color film entitled War. This is a documentary on the futility of war as revealed in a dialogue between a soldier and a group of children. Along with this is another 25-minute color film Ski the Outer Limits. A film in which the strange and wonderful feats performed suggest man's timeless search for in- volvement and meaning. And, finally on the program is a 30-minute 1930 Laurel and Hardy film, The Laurel and Hardy Murder Case in which Stan and Ollie find themselves in the midst of the nuttiest murder thriller with spooks, corpses and laughter. This film night looks like a fine variety evening. In addition to the Humber Memorial grant, they awarded $350. to the Cancer Society (Weston Division), $350. to the Heart Fund and 8450. to the benevolent fund of the Order of the Eastern Star. October was United Appeal month! At Nelson A. Boylen Secondary School there was a lot going on to help raise money for the many charitable organizations aided by this yearly campaign for funds. There were such things as: the teachers' tricycle race which was won by Mr. Thompson, slave day, raffles for a hockey game, a well, Miss and Mr. United Appeal contests, hamburger eating contest, turtle race, record hop, car ralley, sponge throw and a swim-a-thon. In the swim-a-thon there were eight participants Marju Kasenurm, Carol Pascoe, Lynda Brown, Cheryl Bevan, Maxine Wiber, Tom Gibson, Laurie Pietras and Bob Cann. They swam a total of ap- proximately 780 lengths of the pool within a one hour time limit. At the beginning of the week there was a United Appeal assembly during which the band played and the students got to see the Mr. and Miss United Appeal representatives from each grade. The 12 Boylen Beauties entertained us with a chorus line-type act. They really stole the show when they flipped up their skirts and showed off "UNITED APPEAL" spelled out on their backsides. These Beauties were twelve brave males posing as busty, sexy S'orr, Students at Boylen s1.59 females. The assembly raised the spirits of the students to help get the United Appeal Campaign off to a good start. +++ A fashion show was held at Boylen on Wednesday evening, October 27, that drew a crowd of nearly 400. During the first half of the two-hour show, the girls modelled their own clothes many made by the girls themselves. The second half of the show involved a make- up demonstration and clothes from Women's World of Fashion. The models were all girls from the school and the show was sponsored by the Kennedy Club. .The money raised from the $1.00 ad- mission went 50-50 to the Student Council and to help support the Kennedy Club's child in Korea, a most Worthy cause. +++ The Transatlantic Group dance was held on Saturday, October 16 at St. Judes Church in Weston with 175 people in attendance. The decorations were on a Thanksgiving theme with beautiful colored leaves adorning every table. At this dance two wheel chairs were donated by the club to Toronto Chapter of Muscular Dystrophy. Several wheelchairs have been donated in the past and the Muscular Dystrophy Chapter of Toronto presented the club with a plaque for voluntary ser- vices. Door prizes, one was a lovely basket of food, and spot prizes were won by several lucky people.
