Some people seem to have the mistaken idea that we must journey some two or three hundred miles from Weston to enjoy good fishing. This is definitely not so. For a good number of years members of the Weston Rod and Gun Club have enjoyed good fishing within\ short _ driving Where and when to go, plus the right tackle and a little knowâ€"how, will produce many fruitful hours in the great outdoors. The enclosed photograph was taken on last opening day of the trout season. This fish was a twelve and a half pound rainbow taken in the Boyne river near Alliston which is some forty miles from Weston. The lucky fisherman was Allen Jones, one of our arâ€" dent anglers. Allen was born and raised in Ireland where he fished for salmon and various species of trout. By the way, in Ireland a six pound rainbow would be ‘a record catch. _ i 1971 notably a nineteen pound ten ounce rainbow from the Nottawasaga and another rainbow from the Owne Sound harbor that weighed in at nineteen pounds, eight ounces. Splake is another type of game fish that has taken hold in these waters. This game fish is a cross between lake trout and speckled trout. They usually maintain the color of speckles but have the shape and size of lake trout. The area around Meaford is a good spot to try for this colorful fish. Occasionally some good coho6 salmon are also caught in this area too. These salmon apparently have made the journey from the American side of Lake Huron around the top of Bruce Peninsula to Georgian Bay. If you are fortunate enough to get a cohoe from these waters I am sure you will remember it for the rest of your life. Departments of Lands and Forests personnel can take a bow for the great work they have done in this «area. Despit%l;le inroads of pollution &nd many other problems, fishing in this area seems to get better every year. However, there are problems to overcome ard this is where you, the sportsman can help. I suggest that you join a club interested in conâ€" servation, such as the Weston Rod and Gun Club, or any other club affiliated with The Federation of Anglers and Hunters, so that you can voice opinions concerning better _ anti _ pollution methods, better game laws, stream improvement, etc. We need your help.
