This lodge is one of the first to actively promote canoeing as an alternative outdoor activity for adult guests. Bugaboo Lodge, already world famous for the fabulous helicopter skiing in wintertime, is not only noted for mountain climbing and hiking among the remote Bugaboo spires but is also close to some of the finest canoeing rivers in the western mountains. tJ-ttned-to-ttttrs/tig-tBa-r Natuaat-,albeeu.tt-ttghe-tr-tiot at-tatt-rt-d-tIta-b-tttr-tte mile: from June: mite. After camping overnight at Mon, the second day includes two separate stretches of the Spillamacheen River that take you about is miles downstream. The Spilla- macheen is a fast-flowing wilderness river that offers everything from flying spray to easy-going float stretches and placid pools in the back waters of gravel bars. The Hudson’s Bay Com- pany's U-Paddle Canoe Service offers 17-foot Gnynmans for rent (wiper week, two week minimum) which can be dropped at any HBC store between Thunder Bay, Ontario and Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories. Experienced Mid-Went Canoeing The northern waters and forests of Saskatchewan and Manitoba, traditonally noted for trophy fishing and big game hunting, offer some of North America's most challenging canoe routes. The sparsely-populated northern portions of the provinces contain a vast network of interconnected waterways with fasMIowing rivers, quieter stretches and remote lakes. Facilities are not well-developed, however, and it's advisable to bring your own canoe as rentals are limited, mile run on the Bobby Burns Creek. The Bobby'Burns is no creek but a lusty, fast moving boiler that hustler along even faster than “I Spillamacheen. The greater volume of water involves little more than a merry ride however and is relatively easy going. One tricky spot does rate a short portage. Since the Spillamacheen is fed by melt waters from glaciers higher up in the mountains, you will also find it quite refreshing if you are careless enough to get wet. Quebec's wilderness lakes and rivers long established as a haunt for loggers and hunters, have become a prime and easily accessible destination for canoeists. Organized trips are available in La Verendrye Park, while other parks such " Mont Tremblant and the huge Parc des Laurentides offer hundreds of miles of navigable canoe water. Licenced guides can be reserved through the Parks Branch of the Department of Tourism, Fish and Game in Quebec City, or through outfitters recommended by the Bureau. Maps are also available trom the Parks Branch. Because of the wilderness character V of most of Canada's canoeing regions, an experienced guide should be hired as his knowledge can make or break a trip. Canoeists with less ex- perience should choose a shorter trip in a less remote area. It is recommended that you sign in with the local authorities (park wardens, forest rangers) leaving your itinerary, and sign out at the end ot your trip. Most parks post notices outlining this procedure. You‘ll also find that these local authorities are a fund of knowledge which will also contribute to happy canoeing. , For more information on Canada's great outdoors contact the Canadian Government Travel Bureau, 150 Kent Street, Ottawa, KIA 0H6.
