We hate to see the opening of the Ex. It means the end of summer. The two weeks or so of Exhibition time in Toronto just zip by and before you can say "For the price of one thin dime,"‘ it‘s Labor Day. Kids love the Ex. Perhaps not as much as we did when we were youngsters, but it‘s fun time for them. For us it was different. When we were kids we got our first glimpse of television at the Ex. We believe it was in 1939 that the magic of TV was there before our very eyes. There were some other things good about the Ex in the old days and everyone but everyone had shopping bags filled with samples as they came away from the food building. Try that one now. You might get the odd but very thin slice of some kind of smoked beef or whatever they call it, but you won‘t get any samplings of all those goodies they handed out years and years ago. What a marvel. A moving picture â€" about five or six inches around â€" that would be in each and every home someday. You have to pay for everything now. You just don‘t get anything for nothing anymore. With the price of meat skyrocketing the way it has of late it may be the closest we‘ll get to pork chops or a sirloin steak for some time. Who knows that there may be some budding journalists amongst them. _ _ â€" Maybe this year we should all make it a point in going to the Exhibition and first on our list should be to the animal buildings where steaks and bacon on the hoof can be seen. These animals will soon be worth their weight in gold. â€" o â€" And, by all means, make sure the kids see the animals. _ Maybe someday they‘ll be able to take to a typewriter on a rather dull newsweek and put together something like: _ _ _ _ o We believe it was during the Ex of 1973 that we saw marvellous creatures called cows and pigs right before our very eyes. (2) "Broken curbs â€" patchwork surface of Mahoney"‘ â€" This street is in the 1973 capital budget awaiting final approval. This carpet treated roadway, with present sidewalks less curbs, has finally been approved on a local improvement by the residents on the street. Residents will pay a share of curbs and roadway. Sidewalk replacement is at the expense of all borough residents. (1) "Rogers Road tracks cause problems" â€" This track allowance maintained by TTC is to be covered or removed for trolley buses next year. A five year battle by council resulted in (a) a new roadway from Rogers to Bicknell (b) elimination of the tracks for next year. (6) "Trethewey Drive‘"‘ â€" A Metro road until late 1972. York‘s part of the road is to be completed to the new bridge this year and hopefully to Yore Road in 1974. (3) ‘"‘Weston Road tram tracks resurfacing again‘"‘ â€" A Metro responsibility. (4) "Paulson Road" â€"Carpet treated roadway only. Residents do not want improved roads or sidewalks. (5) ‘"Lonborough Avenue‘‘ â€" Completion of a deep storm sewer in 1972 resulted in relaying half the street. (7) "Sidewalk, Cayuga and Weston Road‘"‘ â€" Not on priority list for 1973. (8) A repeat of Item 6. Since amalgamation, York has adopted a policy in regard to renewing sidewalks and pavements. In 1972 York received a subsidy of $200,000 plus an added subsidy of $150,000. In 1973 York received a sharp increase over the same period of last. It was stated the operating profit for the three months ending August 1, amount to over $390, as compared to the $50 for the same period of last year, or eight times as much. The relief situation shows a marked imâ€" provement, there being only 58 families on the rolls at present, as compared with some 116 during the winter time. On the ground that the wholesale price of milk had jumped over the weekend, council was asked to pay 10 cents per quart of milk instead of 8 cents. Council asked for a week‘s delay on ‘the proposal so that it might be considered by the welfare board. 20 years ago The parking meter is coming closer to Weston. York township council has announced plans to place parking meters on sections of Weston Road after placini(them first on Eglinton Avenue this summer and making a study to prove whether or not they can make a profit. Town council agreed to attend the meeting proposed by the Village of Swansea, by letter, Monday night. The letter said a brief to the Royal Commission set up by the Province to inquire into and report on the structure, and organization of Metropolitan Toronto and its boundaries and the boundaries of the municipalities could be presented by the smaller suburbs. The opposition of Swansea is similar to that posed by Weston and the other municipalities mentioned. Since you have adopted a "Pet of the Week" to imâ€" prove relations with our Animal Control Centre and York residents perhaps you could delve into the Works Department likewise. A sidewalk, road or sewer construction of the week may not be a newsworthy item but is more essential â€" and is being acâ€" complished. 4 Since new and renewed sidewalks, roads and sewer projects are more numerous than the weeks in the year, it would be no problem to supply your newspaper with pictures to accent the positive in York. Yours truly James W. Trimbee Controller subsidy of $200,000 plus an added subsidy of $200,000. Since subsidy from the Ontario Government is fifty percent of costs, York spent $700,000 last year on sidewalks and roads and will spend $800,00 this year, not $350,000. In 1972 fortyâ€"nine sidewalk and curb reconstructions were carried out. This year sixteen have been comâ€" pleted and twentyâ€"one remain to be done. In 1972 five streets were reconstructed. In 1973 twelve streets are on the list. Many streets in York are simply carpet treated with no proper foundation. A permanent road with curbs is only done as a local improvement and requires authority of residents who have their share added to taxes. Because council realize that most sidewalks and streets need reconstruction, they have prevailed upon the Ontario Government to increase road subsidy for the past two years. .
