The list includes 400 applicants from North York and 200 from York. About 64 percent of the applicants are women and 83 percent of the applicants want bachelor apartments. About 50 percent of the applicants, who often have to wait up to two years, live in rooms or flats. Metro Chairman Paul Godfrey said he intends to improve Metro government‘s image among other municipalities. He plans to discuss a wide range of mutual problems with the new regional governâ€" ments that surround Metro. "They can learn from our experience as they grow," he said. He will discuss such issues as regional transportation, conservation, provision of public housing and the servicing of land with sewer and water lines with the leaders of the new regional governments. The new governments are Halton, Peel in the west and Durham in the east. Metro‘s 24â€"hour emergency ambulance service had 139,000 calls last year with December the big month. Almost oneâ€" half of the calls came from private homes. An estimated 79,000 of the 139,000 calls were in the emergency category. Amont the emergency calls were 30,000 cases of persons who have collapsed. Another 10,000 involved persons with broken bones and 9,000 with assorted wounds.
