We're growing and you can help We have excellent carriers in some areas and hope that wihin the next few months we will have gathered others.In the meantime,we are making sure that the paper will be in every local store in areas where there are no carriers. The response from the community has been good and often we are swamped with telephone calls prior to pu blica- tion dates by people who wish to pick their copy up at a local store rather than wait for the carrier. This has lead us But, like any other new company, it takes time to develop a good team. The York News has made every effort during the past year to ensure that distribution ofthe paper has covered the entire Borough. High school football came to an end in the Borough last week, and Weston's two teams finished the season in first place. The seniors won the title, and the juniors lost to East York, in the Finals. The University Women's Club of Weston and District are holding a meet- ing on November 26 at 8 pm. in which Mrs. Margaret Campbell, Member of the Ontario Legislation will be the guest speaker. Mrs. Campbell will be speak- mg on the Constitution during this open meeting. The meeting will be held at Central United Chruch, King St. and Weston Road and it is open to the public. The Happy Manor Choir, are hold- ing their pre-Christmas bazzaar on Sat- urday, Detember 6 from, ll a.m l , p.m/And it's just in time for you to pick up those lovely hand-knitted fancy work gifts for someone special on your list. In addition, there will be a white ele- phant table, a sale of books, odds and ends and, of course, a bake table. A salad lunch is being served for only $1.50. Of the 120 ladies in attendance, 45 were original Charter members. Way back 25 years ago 245 ladies curled and today there are still 13 of these ladies curling with 6 still curling in the "Busines Girls" section. The 1980/81 season of curling at the Weston Golf and Country Club marks the 25th Anniversary of the club. Recently a Tea was held to honour the occasion. Ladies from the originating Charter were invited to share in the cake cutting, with the first President, Mrs. Thelma Leadbeater doing the honours. It was an important welcome for Wes- ton Baptist Church who have been With out a pastor for a year. Affectionately known as "Pas- tor John", Rev. WeRev Weiler has fast become a part of Weston Baptist Church and over 250 people were on hand for the cere- mony. Pastor John was born at Kitchener, Ontario.Uponcom- pletion of High School he studied at the Ontario Bible College and Trinity Evangelical Divin- ity School. He mar- ried Jane Burr in 1967 and together the couple have served at Dover- court Road Baptist Church; Skokie Val- ley Baptist Church; Bethel Evangelical Baptist Church and Wheatley Baptist Church. The couple have one daughter, Deb- bie Lynn. Pastor John and his family bring to Weston Do you have some spare time? Can your drive a small van? Do you have an F license? Pastors from neighbouring Bap- tist Churches were also in attendance and greetings were brought from Rev. Joseph Novak of Pelmo Park Baptist Church and Rev. Gordon Freeland of Richview Baptist Church. In order to ena- ble Pastor John to learn something about Weston's his- tory, Mayor Gayle Christie presented him with a book entitled "Stories of York". This book describes some of the historical events of the area written by local people. Baptist Church, a warm, outgoing family who will fit right into the com- munity and the congregation. Working for community Former Mayor Philip White was elected as Con- troller. Former Controller James Trimbee was elected Alderman in Ward 6. And, Former Alderman Lloyd Sainsbury was elected to serve as School Trustee in Ward 6. Reaching into the grab bag that was filled with stuffed animals, this youngster pulled out the biggest one she could find. And then to make sure it was hers she hugged it with all her might. Photos by Dawne Moss Election wrap-up One new face on the Borough council will be Ward 2 Alderman Tony Mandarano who replaces Oscar Kogan. York's election saw three former members of council elected to serve the Borough for the next two years. Among the figures suppled below it is interest- ing to note that Controller Alan Tonks took his own Ward 5 out of the eight Wards leaving 7 wins to Mayor Gayle Christie. In the Controller's race Mr. Brown took Wards 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 leaving Ward l to Harriet Wolman and Wards 7 and 8 to Philip White.
