A watch has revealed that good bread is each week thrown into garbage tins. This may have been all right under normal condiâ€" ever, it is a crime to waste bread or any food stuff. It was necessary to prosecute some in England be fore they realized the facts. These facts are, however, such that action will have to be taken here to stop the wanton waste. If you cannot eat the bread give it to the chickens or other animals. They will thrive upon it. The wheat supply will be small for the world this year. Bread is at a high price now, every piece that you waste will raise it still higher. Set to work to lower it by economy. SAVE! Five representatives were present and ready to go into the relative values of their steam heating system. Each one had good sellng points. The Dominion Radiator Co. spoke of installing a gravity steam system. The reason given for this system would need some further study. The Taylor Forbes Co. championed a two pipe gravity system, Warden King a one pipe gravity system, and Pease Foundry held up the vacuum system. Each man was filled with the excellence of his system. Each proved that it was the one required for this hall. It would require an expert to understand the many details elaborated upon. All listened to these men till 12 o‘clock. \The council decided it would carefully analyze each system before acting on plan. This was the best plan. All should go slow and be sure you know what you want and what you are going to get. A discussion will be made at the next meeting of the council. In the m eantime all available data will be gathered. The Weston council held a special meeting on Monday night. The object of this was to look into the details of a heating system for the town hall. Councillors Scythes and Sainsbury were both absentees. The Mayor presided. A raise of salary was granted to Wm. Crooks, who will now reâ€" ceive $65.00 per month. The bill for the repairson the new fire truck and the new batters was passâ€" ed and paid for. The question of the price of gravel was again spoken of. No action was taken. The council feel that the roads commission made the bargain for 50¢ per yard and a half of gravel. The council is called upon to make a big outlay. While the money is unimportant, yet the work is very important. Great care should be taken by the council to see that value is receved for every dollar spent. No one but those perfectly familiar with systems for heating should form opinâ€" ions until they know all the details. Someone who is capable of judging the workmanship, material used and the results given should be detailed to oversee the whole job. This man shouldâ€" have the confidence of all the people and should be one who is looking after the interests of our town. Every move should be carefully watched. Nothing should be allowed to be passed over. Then when everyâ€" thing is completed and handed over the town will know through its council that we have a good system installed. If, however, things are allowed to go on lax there will be dissatisfaction. The work is necessary. The people are willing. All that is wanted is value dollar for dollar. ‘ Lend your imagination for a moment. Suppose you have land out here to look for a home or a place to locate. You know no one. The car stops at Eagle‘s Hotel, you get off. The centre of the town is not imposing, you walk down Eagle Avenue and see a few homes well kept. You wallk up Main Street and you see one nice home and two badly kept.. You see a dirty street with long grass and weeds over the walks. You see empty pasture fields raising weeds. You come to the end of the line and take the car home disgusted with Weston. The railway tracks cut the town in two. Strangâ€" ers only see Main Street and get a bad impression.sBy a uniformity along the street of all boulevards, by a track well balanced and level with the road, by forcing all holders of vacant land to keep it cut and cared for, by a few more lights along Main St. to brighten up the whole streetâ€"in this way our streets would become a place of beauty. All coming here would be enhanced and at once have a deâ€" sire to locate here. The whole plan is one for consideration and should be looked upon with favor. You . pass through town after town and you will notice that special efforts are made to care for the Main Street. Our street, on account of its length, requires greater effort than small streets would. The townspeople are asked to assist in the work. Make Main Street the most attrattive street in town. Good work is being done in town by the cutting away of the low branches of our trees. The cutting of the grass on the boulevards on Main St. was also a fine piece of work. It does look a little better. Would it be too much to appeal to the residents on Main Street especially to keep this in order. The work entailed will amount to nothing. It will give your house and lawn an added apâ€" pearance. It will give the whole town a more beautiful appearance. It will make an impression on the strangers. : During the year the merchants have used it. T hey have reaped a benefit. We are looking forward to a still greater and bigger year than ever along these lines. All advertisements put in have been genuine. The merchants have been battling up hill to gain the confidence of the people. It has been slow, but is showing results. Look out for big doings along this line next year. As you have been interested in the paper, as it is your paper, we would ask you to see if your neighbor takes it. Show him a copy or give us his name and we will send him one. Thus coâ€"operaâ€" tron with us will make our paper a factor in the life of West York. One of the great functions of a local paper is to bring before its readers matters that interest the community. This is the b2nd paper issued under the present management. During the year our efâ€" forts have been to foster a spirit of coâ€"operation in this community. In this‘we have received much assistance and coâ€"operation from many. In starting out on another year we wouldâ€"ask for a still greater use of the paper. Let it become the medium through which you will reach the people. Many items of public interest could be brought to the notice of the people. Many subjects that require special and careful explanations can be given to the people through the press. A spirit of coâ€"operaâ€" tion can be developed by your articles. The paper is yours and we ask you to use it. ' The consumer must also take notice of the merchant‘s efforts. Through his daily business and constant mixing with men and women he should know values â€" that is $1.00 for $1.00. He should see that by buying at home he can save money. If it costs him more for the same article, then buy in the cheapest market. If the prices are equal, then give the home merchant the trade. Now why should I give my home merchant the trade. Because the greater the business you do the bigger your place will grow. If you buy 50 per cent. more goods in town then you leave that much more money here for development. You will bring that much more into our stores for sale. You will give the merchant a bigger turnover. This will enable him to do business on a still cheaper basis. The sum of the whole is by a study of prices and conditions and coâ€"operation with our merchants, and in this way a greater business can be done. Matters Of Interest â€" To Weston People Coâ€"operation is the concentration of forces. Unity spells strength wherever you "go. By comâ€" bined efforts the strongest obstacle can be overcome. _ Yet we find an utter lack of coâ€"operation in our town and the district which surrounds us.. Each man is individually trying to make everything go in his line only. This keeps him so busy that it is impossible to leave his books and store for any length pf time.. Opportunities are let slip by because of lack of time to analyze them. Better methâ€" ods are not heard of because there is little or no intercourse. New ideas in window dressing, store displays, salesmanship, and bookkeeping are not gone into because of the great pressure to do the first.thing at hand. To do what is at hand is necessary. Because success has attended our efforts is a good reason to continue along the same line. That we have made a decent living and can do so is very fine. Yet every merchant in town feels that he should do a still greater business. We feel rather peeved when we see the boys go into West Toronto with their little baskets on Friday and Saturday. We note that much of the clothing worn and many other articles could have been handled by us just as well as some of the big down town stores.. We sit by to wonder why it is and find that we have no time to analyze it. A careful analysis would show that the people have formed a habit to do certain shopping down town. A habit as you know is something that is hard to break. Yet by a careful analysis and persistent effort they can be overcome. If a community spirit were developed it would pave the way for a greater Weston.. ‘The ‘bringâ€" ing together of the merchants and the consumers under the slogan "More business for this district" would mean a centre of some force. West Toronto by persistent effort solved the problem. Toâ€"day everybody goes there.. The streets are alive with people, pretty shop windows and brilliant lights. You get into the habit of going. When you go you get something. They have built up the districtâ€"the merâ€" chant and the people have had confidence in each o ther. Can we not do the same here? The merchants have an association where they can gather together, talk over details, conditions, methods, salesmanâ€" ship, etc. No one need be afraid of the other fellow grasping your ideas. Each idea that you develop and give out makes room in your own brain for something higher and greater. It is by the working out of the brain theories that you are able to go along. A suggestion from some plan, a word during a discussion may be just the missing link to some great achievement. This can all be worked out in your association meeting.
