This will be accomplish- "ed by a redistribution of the lights now in use. SOME WORK TO DO The Social Service Committee of Weston have been looking for some definite work to do. It is the general concensus of opinion that there is no place in Weston for a committee of this kind. As a matter of fact, there is now a very important work for this committee. We have at present a number of men who need some attention, a social force to become an in- fluence in their lives. At present the men have no common meeting point/no entertainment to pass a sociarhour, no athletic sport to use up their surplus energy. Nothing is done to assist these men socially. They are left to their own resources. Sunday some of them go to church. The rest of the week nothing is done for them. gs it any wonder that these men drift into a game and lose or win a large sum of money? Is it any wonder that they become fascinated with the game? Nobody can afford to lose any money during these times. No person should impair their health by sitting at a table till the small hours of the morning. Every man should be out taking exercise that will develop and fit him for the best'that is in him. We need men to-day more than ever. ' The Water, Power & Light Commission cut off the lights on Main Street north in order to comply With the orders of the Hydro Elec- tric Commission. As a war measure all the electric power is to be cut down and turned over for munition works. In cutting off Main Street it was simply put on the same basis as the rest of the town. Main Street north had a light on every pole and the five cluster light. This has been reduced to a light every other pole and only one lamp in use on each cluster. In'doing this it means a saving of 15 horse power of electricity each night. The towns- people are only too willing to assist the com- mission in their efforts. Every horse power saved means more power for the production of munitions. Now is the time for you to note the little white cocoons on your trees. Each one of these contains the eggs that develops the fam- ous tussock moth. “Toronto has spent large sums of money to get rid of this pest. It has a start and defies their best efforts. Many of our boys and men are ccfngregat- ing in the public pool rooms and bowling. alleys of Toronto. While the games are all right in themselves and should be encouraged, yet our boys should not be thrown into society such as so often gathers in many of these centres. The influence upon them is very bad. There is only one thing to do: Pick, the co- Coons off all your trees. If each person will lo this within the next few weeks they will be doing: to great service to the town. , In Weston we had a{heir first appearance last year. Little or no damage was caused. If some measure is not taken at once we will find that our trees will be leafless and great damage will be done to our fruit. If, a club with rooms could be organized under the united direction of the Social Service Committee, it would receive the hearty sup- port and co-operation of the citizens of our town, Some definite plan along this line would be the means of eliminating much of the influ- ence which is now exerted over many of the young men. The indirect influence of every- day living is more effective than preaching. Our social service men with strong ideas can give this necessary influence to our men. It requires time and' careful attention, but the re- ward will be a better citizenship and a great force to combat the evil influences that are de- teriorating the health of many a young man. Are you now thinking of clearing up the streets, lanes, backyards, cellars, etc? If not you should be. The town council should take the initiative by setting aside a day or week in which to make a general cleah-up of our town. There is a force in numbers and pur- pose. The individual effort looks small and is unnoticeable. A concentrated effort embodies everybody and gives additional enthusiasm and greater results. Thus if we are desirous of having a general change in the appearance of Weston we should bring about this change. The council should appoint a committee to look after the details. OUR NEW INDUSTRY . The.K. & S. Canadian Tire Ltd. are mak- mg great progress at their new works. They have experienced the great handicap caused by the railway congestion. This delayed the opening of the plant. Wis now expected the plant will be in operation in four weeks' time. Twenty-six of the heavy pieces of machinery are already installed. Many thousand dollars' worth of dies and moulds are here on the floor. Everything is being set in shape. At present the company will confine their efforts to the manufacture of drug sundries. The process used is the only one of its kind in Canada. All rubber goods are moulded and vulcanized. The old method is to glue the edges and thus stick the two parts together. Thus the new factory will be an important asset to Weston. Its possibilities are unlimited. Its product is in demand everywhere. Weston help will be utilized by the company as far as possible. Many applications have already been received and filed. In a short space of time the famous K. & S. tire will be manufactured at this plant. While the city man purchases in large quantities, he turns over at small mar- gins, has big overhead expenses and a great r deal of competition. The local merchants have to pay a little more, perhaps, but their expenses are not so heavy. Thus the one will balance ‘the other, and the local merchant should be able to sell just as cheap,if he buys right. Business only comes when you draw it to you. If your bait is strong and you can supply the demands the trade is yours. If you can't you turn the trade to other centres. One of the great objects of our merchants should be to make this the centre. Draw the people to buy in Weston. This can only be accomplish- ed by the merchant showing the consumer why he' should buy in Weston. To do this he must first overcome certain facts or gossip that goes around the town. It is a common statement heard every day: "I buy in Toronto because I can get service, what I want and at the right price." These are the three main items that appeal to the consumer.' On the service they claim it is possible to get a prompt delivery on the following day. The salesmen are always obliging and courteous to their customers. They are willing to assist in the selections and keep themselves posted upon the latest and most up-to-date methods. They carry what- ever you want or something just as good, not something beyond what you want to pay. You can make your selections or leave them alone. You are under no obligation. If the article is net just what you expected your money will be refunded. Again, on the matter of price they are satisfied with a small margin. It is the turnover that makes the money. It is their complete cash sale that gives them the ready money to make their big turnover. Thus you read the history and success of the big Toronto merchants. With these systematic methods he comes right into our town and takes the money right out. He does not even pay a business tax, nor rent a house pr store, or spend one cent in the town. He takes everything out and puts nothing in, If we are to grow in Weston our merchants must stop this and bring the trade to our town. A short note of these facts and a comparison with conditions will reveal. the fact that our merchants should have no difficulty in secur- ing this business. If they want more business, bigger turnovers and better conditions, it is up to them. They are in a far better position to get this business than the fellow in the city. They can give a service of prompt delivery that the city merchant cannot equal. They can secure salesmen that can be just as pleas- ant and obliging as a stranger. They can as- sist in selections because they know the local conditions better. . A careful study of [ifeNd, detaile "ivc1'ailrmean more business transacted in the town. , t On the question of stock the local mer- chants may not be so well equipped, but a careful study of the requirements of the trade will enable them to carry a stock that would be satisfactory to the trade. They can always be ready and anticipate the requirements and not wait until it is required. Have the goods on hand when wanted. This should be the slogan of all this year. A lot is wasted in the peeling, yet before you can use this slogan it is-necessary to get the stuff to peel. This is one of the greatest prob- lems ever put up to a country. Our country needs food. As seen by the high price and the shortage of many of our foods the need is very great. Last year by a little effort much was accomplished. i All this was a big help to the food situation. This year greater work is ne- cessary. Everybody must assist. Under the leadership of our local Resources Committed much can be accomplished. It is _working out the details, planning wholesale buying and giving every possible assistance to the citizens of Weston to carry on. Will the citizens fail? No, they have proven in the past that they are loyal. The results have spoken forcibly. In the matter of food production Weston Will be to the front. Applications 'are now coming id and the secretary will be ready to receive yours. Send it in at once. As the conditions change the successful pan must re-adapt himself to the new Condi- tions. To be a success to-day one must study the needs and requirements of the time. If our merchants are to become greater assets to our town each one must keep abreast of the times. With the change of the mode of trans- portation the old firm of Cruickshank & Son have created a new department. The time, attention and experience which had been placed in the manufacture of their wagons has made the name well known throughout this section of Ontario. That same workmanship, material and long: years of experience has been handed over to the new department. This new department is in control of the building of bod- ies, boxes and cabs for trucks; also special at- tention is being paid to the repainting of auto- mobiles. During the coming week four new, milk trucks equipped with Ford engines and Smith Form-a-Truck will be turned out from the Cruickshank wagon works. It is our' duty as fellow citizens to direct all the business we can in this line to this old reliable firm. It means a greater name for our town.
