Mayor Harrison presided over a full attendance of members. We are informed that Jas. Gibson, a young man living on Symonâ€" Street, and who has been employed in the mechanical department of the Brown‘s Copper and Brass Rolling Mills, has been arrested as a defaulter and sent on to Niagara Falls detention camp. iyI‘he young man, who is just over nineâ€" teen, is the only support of his widâ€" owed mother and was born in Philâ€" adelphia, but it is claimed that as his parents were British and had never become naturalized citizens of the States, that James is a British subâ€" ject and comes within the scope of the military act. j Capt, Allan Parker and Lt. Roy Parker, two brothers and sons of Mr. Arthur Parker, bhave been awarded the Military Cross. Capt. Allan is with the Medicals and Lt. Roy is atâ€" tached to the Reel Battalion. The young men were active workers. in the Sunday school and league work of the Methodist church before enâ€" listing and Mr. Arthur Parker has been S. S. superintendent for many years. Charlie Parker, a _ younger brother, is also.overseas. Mimico has good reason to be proud of the record of her sons in the great war and reâ€" joices in their success. Miss Parker of Queen Street enterâ€" tained the Progressors of the Mimico Methodist Church at her home on Satâ€" urday afternoon. Tea was served in the grounds and the young people‘had a jolly time. Miss Nell Roffe is the teacher and leader of the Progressâ€" ors and the class is aptly named. . Mr. J. Gormally appeared, asking for the portion of Church Street, from Main Street to Simpson Avenue, be fixed up in good shape and also asked the council to consider the adâ€" visability of oiling Mimico Avenue and Church St. Rev. H. 0. Tremayne apâ€" peared on behalf of the Boys‘ Naval Brigade, asking that thgâ€"eouncil furâ€" nish the necessary bond for the equipâ€" ment of the Mimico brigade. The Rev. G. Mackay ably supported Mr. Tremayne in his appeal. After disâ€" cussion the matter was left over for investigation. The setting apart of June 30th as a day of national prayer is a proper step to take. It is to be devoutly hoped that every ma&n and woman will make it possible to attend these serâ€" vices at their church.. Whilst we have no doubt of the ultimate success of our armies, yet it is well to remember that God is ommipotent and we must be prepared to comeâ€"meekly. before the throne and ask sincerely His help in obtaining the victory over a foe that stops at nothing, Rowever cruel, mean and despicable, to gain his ends. Although typically a Douglas Fairâ€" banks picture, "Down to Earth," now at the Connat&ght Theatre, is different from any of ‘his previous Artcraft ofâ€" ferings. This is due to the fact that the photoplay does not feature the popular actor‘s athletic thrillers, but rather shows why he is capable of perâ€" forming these hairâ€"raisingâ€" tricks. While "Wild and Woolly" was more of a thriller, the new Fairbanks picâ€" ture gets most of its Jaughs from inâ€" cidents concerning life as Douglas Fairbanks sees it, namely, under the great blue sky, close to nature. Mrs. Aikenhead, wife of the Rev. J. K. Aikenhead, a former pastor «of the Methodist church, wzg the preachâ€" er at the evening service on Sunday last. The Rev. Mr. Aikenhead was alâ€" so present and took part in the serâ€" vice. Many members and friends took the opportunity to welcome the forâ€" mer pastor and his wife, who did splendid work in Mimico during their residence in the town. # * \Â¥% A moderate number only attended the public meeting held in the library hall on Friday evening for the purpose of organizing for registration day, whichâ€"is to be June ‘22nd. Mr. E. Lawson, registrar for West York, was present and explained fully the meâ€" thod of procedure to be adopted and a committee consisting of the mayor, Mr. Chester Ferrier, Miss Burgess, and Mr. E. Chippendale, was appointed to take charge. There is ample opporâ€" tunity for a great number of volunâ€" teers to help in this work, and any of the committee named will be willing to accept the services of those desirâ€" ing to help. The Rev. T. H. Brunton, who has been in charge of St. Margaret‘s Church, has resigned andâ€"on Sunday preached ~his farewell sermon. His successor has not so far been appointâ€" ed. The Rev. Canon Tremayne of Mimico ~will make interim . arrangeâ€" ments. Mr. Brunton has been in charge of the New Torontouchurch for about two years and has been an earâ€" nest worker, especially amongst the young people. He is a nephew of Maâ€" gistrate Brunton of County court fame. $ A letter was then read from the Medical Health Officer, Dr. Forbesâ€" Godfrey, stating that sewers were urâ€" gently needed on Symon Street, west of Church St., and recommended that same be laid as soon as possible. The feeling of the council was that the doctor‘s recommendation did not go quite far enough and will meet the doctor on the question. The Finance Committee having conâ€" sidered the accounts, presented to the council, the same were ordered to be paid, the amounts being $15,969.73 for general, and $28,618.62 for water and sewers. Mr. W. K. Banfield of W. H. Banâ€" field & Sons presented the corporaâ€" tion with a silver plated shell mountâ€" ed on a walnut base. The gift was acâ€" cepted by the mayor on behalf of the council, and thanked the donor for the gift. Mr. Banfield is well known in the city of Toronto and is a resiâ€" dent of Mimico. The building byâ€"law will be further considered on Thursday evening next. MIMICO COUNCIL MEETING MIMICO Patronize the Local Merchants Remember that it is necessary for you to register next week. Everyone must do so. Provisions are made for the registration at the school, the Municipal offices, J. J. McCullum‘s ofâ€" fice and the Lakeviewâ€"Hotel. You will find registrars at these places evâ€" ery night next week and all day Satâ€" urday. Read the advertisements for the details and your guidance. The factories will attend to the registerâ€" ing of their employees. Don‘t put it off. Get yours in early. On Monday evening the Council held their regular monthly meeting. Everything passed off as smooth as clockwork. The council is working for the best interests of the village. Reeve Lovejoy occupied the chair and all the members were on hand. In the Hydro meeting it was deâ€" cided to pay of $5000.00 of their debt to the Hydro Commission. This is oneâ€"third of the amount that is owâ€" ing. The Hydro showed a splendid report at this meeting. He is a son of James Dunn, Sr., and a brother of Mr. James Dunn, coal and wood merchant. He went overâ€" seas three years ago this coming Sepâ€" tember and has been in the trenches for two years. Another brother is also in active service. With the returns all in and the asâ€" sessment confirmed by the Court of Revision, New Toronto‘s assessor, Mr. Ruttan, is to be congratulated upon the splendid way in which he perâ€" formed his duty. It requires a man of good judgment, decision and ability to estimate values and perform the duties successfully. . He has done this and turned in to the village an assessâ€" ment of $3,283,549.00.. This is a great assessment for a village Goodyear Tire, Dupont, Brown‘s, all add to this big amount. It shows the possibilities of this little place. Mr. Dyer, 84 years of age, paid a visit to his son, Councillor Dyer, last week. Conceded to be one of the most beautiful women on.â€"the American stage toâ€"day, Elsie Ferguson loses none of her charm on the screen in her first Artcraft picture, ‘"*Barbary Sheep," coming . to mthe Connaught Theatre next Wednesday. Miss Ferâ€" guson, it is expected, will become known as the most beautiful woman on the scereen shortly after her apâ€" pearance in her initial photoplay. Her rare personal charm is faithfully reâ€" produced by the camera and that her popularity of stageland will more than be duplicated on the sereen is readily anticipated. Rev. Mr. Mackay of Washago was in charge of the services in St. Marâ€" garet‘s Church, New Toronto, on Sunâ€" day, June the 9th. Corp. Wm. Dunn has been awarded the Military Medal for conspicuous bravery on the field, and at his reâ€" quest it was presented to his sister, Miss Minnic Dunn of New Toronto. The reeve and councillors are preâ€" paring in their usual business like manner for registration day. A numâ€" ber of registration booths are being arranged for and a number of volunâ€" tary assistants have been secured. The schedule of the Lake Shore Senior Baseball League for Saturday, June 15th, is as follows: Gutta Percha at Regal Shoe. Goodyear at Brown‘s. Pigs and goats have become unâ€" bearable in the village. The last few warm days has made it evident that these are not desirable citizens to have in the village. It is true that the place is not crowded. The point is that they are very offensive. The plea _ of the time was put forth, but did not avail. There is a great need for bacon. Everybody that can ought to raise hogs. Still it is not the place to raise them in our towns. No one wants a piggery alongside their home during warm weather. This byâ€"law will be drawn up by the clerk for the next meeting. As the sewers are now ready in the village there will be another byâ€"law passed. This will compell all to conâ€" nect up with the System. It is a neâ€" cessary step to be taken. With the system in good order there is now no reason for not connecting up. For the safety of the village it is importâ€" ant. As an asset to the property it means a lot. In fact it is a good move,. The rate to be charged for theseâ€"conâ€" nections will be figured out by the enâ€" gineer. s Sewer pipes are to be laid on Birmâ€" ingham Street, from 9th Street to 13th Street, and on 13th Street from Birmâ€" ingham Street to New Toronto Street. The council adjourned. Great activity is being shown in the development of the garden plots. The work is not very hard yet, but is inâ€" creasing as the weeds come on. Now is the great time. Keep the weeds under control and you are sure of a big harvest. 5 5 Mr. Edward Howell of Fourth Ave. has sold a house to Mr. George Downâ€" er of Toronto. Mr. Downer expects to take possession early in July. The resignation of ‘Mr. Daniels, the town constable, was accepted. Some of the council would have liked to retain him if possible, but it was not. He states that there is too much to do for the money paid. Another man is wanted for the job. Applications will be received by the Clerk. A letter from the Salvation Army asked for a grant to their new lot on Mimico avenue. While the building has been all paid for by the headquarâ€" ters there is $1400 to be paid for the lot. They pointed out the work that has been done by the army and the future in this section. ‘As the facâ€" tories will all assist, they would like to have a donation from the council. This will be considered at a future meeting. The plans for Parker‘s Subdivision were passed by the council. In subdiâ€" viding now it is necessary to have the consentâ€"of all those municipalities that adjoin. LAKE SHORE ROAD NEW TORONTO The soldiers at Long Branch held a very successful dance last Friday night in the Long Branch pavillion. The decorations were of a patriotic nature, which blended well with the khaki clad boys and the dainty gowns worn by the ladies. Once more the park mer swing. Dances are being held every Monâ€" day, Wednesday and Saturday night in the Park. The hotel service at the park is meeting the requirements so far. â€" It is essential to have this, as it adds to the park as a suitable place to spend a few weeks. Long Branch, situated as it is withâ€" in twenty minutes‘ run on the car from Toronto, and an easy distance for a motor trip, has a natural locaâ€" tion on the lake. The old trees add much to its attractiveness. The park is arranged with an eye to beauty. The natural assets of the place are added to by the beautiful, well kept residence and lawn, but the whole efâ€" fect is somewhat spoiled by a neighâ€" boring rubbish pile, or a vacant, weed producing or untidy lot. All these illâ€"kept places are a very great detriâ€" ment to the locality and should be cleaned up." Some, splendid work has been done by the cottagers, but a lot more can be accomplished. Would it not make you feel proud and increase the value of your summer home to have the park cleaned up. A little concentrated effort and a half day‘s work would do it. Whatever effort you may put forth will be amply reâ€" paid by the increase in the value of your property. Have you noted the new houses that are being built â€" north of the Lake Shore Road at Long Branch? Well, just take a wwalk around them and you will note yé'hat they are â€" a shell put up on posts. They are only a makeâ€" shift, yet they are what sells. A buildâ€" ing inspector should look these places over and report to the council upon their style. They will not be an asset to this section. B Mr. Pete Simone was released on Saturday, after being held in custody for a week on the charge of manâ€" slaughter, arising from the fact that Mr. Simone had run over and killed Mr. I. St. George of Toronto, whilst motoring on Queen Street on Friday, May 31st. The verdict given by the jury empanelled to investigate was that Mr. St. George was accidentally killed and Mr. Simone was exonerated from all blame. Mr. Simone is an emâ€" ployee of the Mimico corporation, beâ€" ing foreman in the water and sewers department. Catharine Cranston, wife of Counâ€" cillor John Bingham, passed peaceâ€" fully away at her home in Esquesing on Thursday, May 16th. Deceased was born in Queens County, Ireland, on November 20, 1848. She was married to Mr. Bingham in the city of Dublin and came to Canada on the 9th of May, 1874, since which time she had been a resident of Esquesing. She is survived by her husband and eight children, four sons and four daugh ters. Traffic at the park entrance is inâ€" creasing every day. It is a busy corâ€" ner. To meet the demands more enâ€" terprise is needed by those at these corners. [ Corporal A. N. Ormsby, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Ormsby of Ormscliffe, has gone overseas with the tank batâ€" talion. s At last the greens are ready and all the old timers are on the grounds. Last Saturday was a real day for bowlâ€" ing on the green. The Long Branch bowlers thought so too. They were on the job in numbers, and a good seaâ€" son is anticipated this yeat. It is one of the best games after a day of busiâ€" ness worries or labors. If you are not into the game, get into it. With the 1200 soldiers at the ranges it makes the branch a lively place. Post office business has increased. Reâ€" freshment trade is booming and~the street car service is demoralized by the crowds. An interesting event took place at the biâ€"weekly meeting of mothers held at the home of Mrs. Ogden, when Mrs. Stirk was congratulated on her recent marriage. An excellent tea was served in honor of the event and the ladies present spent an enjoyable hour. At last the cement sidewalk is beâ€" ing laid along the Shore Road. It has been very dangerous along here for those walkimtg, as the roadway was the only place to travel. . With the completion of this work there ought to be a big boom in this section of the Shore Road. A little more attenâ€" tion by the ratepayers to the developâ€" m;-z?lt of this district would. repay them. A cleaning up and draining of the marsh at the north side would be a step in the right direction. Why are all the stores allowed to sell at full swing all day Supday? Eol y I y The campers are out in fufi' force at the mouth of the Mimico Creek. The last few nights have not been pleasant nights to spend under canâ€" vas, with the lake roaring at your feet. S Where is the oil for the Long Branch roads? . This is the question that is beâ€" ing asked here every day. When will it arrive? Up to the present time the dust has been very bad in the park. To overcome this oil is needed upon the roads. There is, however, another reason also. New gravel has been placed upon the roads. As the wind blows and the sun dries up the roads, this is being blown away. A little oil would prevent this, as it binds toâ€" gether the particles and preserves the roads. Those in charge of the roads should rush along the oil. LONG BRANCH HUMBER BAY MIMICO is in full sumâ€" , Starring Sesue Hayakawa From the famous stories by Wallace Irwin.
