As a result every citizen should do his utmost to make the fair a personal matier, See that you are doing all that. you. can to make it the success that the directâ€" ors are anticipating. You can do this by/entering all that you can.. Or see that you make it a point to have your friends know of ‘the fair, and invite them to come. Having done this, your next step is to see that they are well entéertained.. The efforts put forth by the merchants should _be â€" doubled. They ought to try and make their stores very attractive. Secure lines of goods that will make those who come remember their trip to Weston. Let them look upon Weston as a prQSTess: ive town, very desirable to live in. This will be one of the greatest opâ€" portunities for the Weston merchants to make a name for our town. Again, it would add to the general appearâ€" ances of the town if we had a little ’color. Flags and bunting â€"makes the general tone much brighter. It is good business to do this.. We have not had the town well decorated for some time, and a little effort along this line would create a little more enâ€" thusiasm. To make this a success the coâ€"operâ€" ation of all the friends and parents of these enlisted is necessary. Your part is toâ€"see that your boy or your friend‘s picture is in the hands of the secretary of the Red Cross Society. Do it this week, as this will he a big part of the fair. 2,500,00 men ang women are emâ€" ployed in munition factories in Briâ€" tain. This will be one of the features at the Red Cross tea tent this year. It is expected that every boy who has enâ€" listed from Weston will have his picâ€" ture in this gallery. 3 Mrs. Ross Gooderham presented four saxophones to the brass band of the 1st Battalion, First Central Onâ€" tario Regiment stationed at Niagara Camp. Weston has given much in the past for the different war works. Each one has been received and well resâ€" ponded to by our citizens. One new callâ€"comes to us this week. For some time the work has been concentrated upon the soldiers, who have done such noble work. Weston has done her share in this great work. As a result the new effort needs more enthusiasâ€" tic workers. Some felt that they have just reached the limit in this giving. They felt that they have done all that they can. This is what has to be overcome. It requiresâ€"a little reasonâ€" ing out. Have we reached our limit? is the first question that we must ask ourselves. Spedking â€"generally, we have not. Those who know, say that we in Canada do not know that there is a war on. They make their statement on the outward appearâ€" ances. We have made the sacrifice, know that we are engaged in a big struggle. Still we are far from our limit. Just look at the wealth that is behind us. Note the prosperity that is apparent at every urn of the road. With these two great facts the great majority have not yet reéached the limit.. If we have not reached the limit then the present appeal should meet with a great response in Wesâ€" ton this week. $2,000.00 is the amount that the Weston branch are out to raise. This is a small amount when you recall what Weston has already done for the oth‘er causes. When you realize the importance of the call it is a very small amount. But when you see that our whole prosperity, wealth and country exists toâ€"day beâ€" cause of these men‘s sacrifice, the amount is exceedingly small. Weston will come to the front with their porâ€" tion, but everyone must do their part. Each dollar helps. It looks like a big time in the old town on Friday and Saturday, Weston fair days, this year. As a matter of fact, the efforts that are being put forth by the various committees spell only one wordâ€"Success. Nothing is being left undone to, make this the greatest year in the history of the fair. It is the ambition of the directâ€" ors to make this the best fair in this part of the country. s OUT TO HELP THE NAVY LEAGUE WESTON‘S HERO GALLERY WESTON FAIR PROSPECTS wWEST YORKS NEWSY WEEKLY _With the big rains that generally come with the fall weather and the leaves falling, extra efforts ought to, be put forth to keep all the culverts and ditches clear and fear from obâ€" struction of mud, leaves, sticks, etc. It will be recalled that every big storm finds us in difficulty. with hayvâ€" ing these places clogged. With a litâ€" tle care these can be kept free. Some orders ought to be given to the railâ€" way company to clear their tracks and see that they are properly drainâ€" ed. ,All these items ought to be atâ€" tended to at once before it becomes too late. 5 On the holiday four rinks travelled to: Toronto in search of the famous Balmy Beach trophy.. At nine o‘clock play was started and at 12 o‘clock the bowlers wended ftheir way home. At least, some of them did. But they But they were happy, for they had just won five straight games in the day and were in the semiâ€"finails. This rink was N. J. McEwen‘s. Willy Greaves andâ€" ‘his braves are also among the favorite few. They came home with four wins.. This puts them into the eights. The president lost his forth game in the last end by one shot. He was two upon the last end but his worthy opponent scored a three, which wan the game, and gives him the right ,fo . play W. Greaves for the honors of the semi~ finals The other rink skipped by W. J. Inich was not:so successful. They lost their first game and won the first in the consolation, Etobicoke, Weston and York are all well to the front in the prize lists at the Toronto Exhibitions. . Full details are not yet in,, but as far as it is known, the results speak well for our men whoiare showing. | GREAT SHOWING AT THE TORONTO EXHIBITION In one class of the Shorthorn calves John Gardhouse & Sons just won the 1st, 2nd and 5th places in a class of 19. ~This is a great achievement and speaks well for the class of stock raised around Weston by our townsâ€" men. There are many other notable wins. On Saturday, the 7th, the G. W.V.A. of Mount Dennis will hold their first field day. It will also be a day of extending welcome to all the returnâ€" ed men of, this district. This is the first real occasion in West York that the citizens bave had the opportuniâ€" ty to exterd their welcome to the heroes who have been across the sea.. It will be fitting for all to turn out in great crowd and make this a real welcome. QUR BOWLERS AT With the big increase . of traffic on the suburban line. on account of the exhibition, it again becomes evident that the present line is not giving this district a service that the population demands.. What we need is the ten minute service and more cars.. It is a disgrace to have the cars jJammed as they are. Yet if you don‘t get on that particular car it means twenty minutes wait. This with a half hour‘s ride and after a big day‘s work means much to our citizens. But during the exhibition rush it is even worse. Some time ago the council went into the matter and got a hearing from the railway board. »Certain features were made known at that time that made it look as if there would be a 15 minâ€" ute service. . This has, however, all fallen through for some reason. At least there has as yet been no report on the last hearing with the railway board.. The point is this, if these railâ€" way companies are not going to do anything, then why should they have the use of our streets free. This town does not derive one cent revenue from this company. By their actions they are driving away prospective residents and manufacturers. Is it to our advantage to give them this monâ€" opoly of our street? No! some acâ€" tion should be taken by our council that will make this company: sit up and take notice! sSTREET CAR SERVICE wWEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 1918 GREAT WAR VETERANS‘ DAY Is THIS NOT THE TIME? ISs AT ITs WORST BALMY â€" BEACH This paper has always advocated some sport for the boys. We have felt that as a town we are losing a valuable asset when we allow the boys to go through life without having the opportunity to get into a game of manly sport. The Weston Fair have arranged to put on a bicycle meet for the first night. The Canada Cycle & Motor Co: are supplying the prizes and looking after the details. Evâ€" ery encouragement ought to be given to the events. Get the boys interestâ€" ed and seae that they have a good crowd to cheer them on. Read the list of events and get into the game yourself again. A statement as to the objects and disposition of the funds collected durâ€" ing Sailors‘ Week: > Note: The opject: of this Fund, which was established by His Majesty King George, is to assure more effiâ€" cient aid for the Marine Benevolent Institutions, which have done so much for the Marine during this struggle and â€" whose reserves have been greatly strained by the _ stress of war. Note: This does not mean that we are taking all seamen, prisoners of war, under our protection, but to enâ€" able us to use part of the Funds for this purpose. 2. ii‘or Sailors of the Navy and Merâ€" cantile Marine who are prisoners â€"Note: This overlaps to a certain deâ€" gree clause No. 1, but gives the Leaâ€" gue the added power to assist the deâ€" pendents of seamen, sailors‘ homes, institutes and hospitals in Canada as One of the great features of moving out of a rut is to carefully steer your course to a better ground. Once on the better footing you can again cut loose. â€" In Weston the citizens have been on the lookout to get out of the old way. They are now striving to make headway against odds. , Yet evâ€" eryone of the obstacles that has been pvercome has meant hard fights. We have, as a result, a good town with all improvements. We must not stop at this, however. We want more peoâ€" ple, more business, more activity in manufacturing. How is this to be atâ€" tained?. We cannot go out and force people into our town. We cannot give fancy prices to merchants for their wares. We can‘t pay bonus to manâ€" ufacturers, but we cam show all of these people why they ought to 10â€" cate in Weston. This is the way that we should steer our course. Let the past be only remembered as a greatâ€" er incentive to greater achievements. One ofg the latest moves on the part of our council was the establishment of the local market. This has been a great success so far. It has been the means of bringing producer and jconâ€" sumer together.. It has been the means of letting people know /that Weston is situated in the centre of a great district. Will this market be one of the permanent institutions of our town? This question rests with the citizens of our town and‘ those who live around here. [If we can get more articles on the market, we can have more buyers here. /This can be made the centre for this district if you are willing to make it so. The efâ€" fort has proven so far the wisdom of our council, It is now up to the citiâ€" zens to say if the market will go. ‘ 4. Hor King George‘s Fund for Sailors. 7 3. For the relief of British and Caâ€" nadian Sailors and their dependents, Sailors‘ Homes, Institutes and Hospiâ€" tals in Canada and throughout the Empire. _ BR With the present shortage of labor the venture made by our town merâ€" chant is to be fi-ighly commended. The success of such a venture depends upon the support that the citizens give to the merchant and the way they merchant uses his customers.. Everyâ€" body is willing to pay cash when they go to Toronto. They are also willing . to fill their Iittle baskets and carcy home their parcels. Cannot the same . be accorded to our own merchants when they are willing to give the customer the advantage? This will be given a good trial, If all are bent upon making Weston, they will do all they can to help. The ratepayers of Weston can now be on the lookout for their tax noâ€" tices any day now. Again the town is giving the percentage off on all taxes paid on or before the 25th day of September. Every citizen should make an effort to secure this rebate. A dollar saved in this way is equal to a dollar made. It is the duty of all to make every dollar count. Wesâ€" ton needs your money. You need the interest. Then it is your duty to get the benefit of the discount. Arrange now to have the amount ready for the 25th of the month. â€" 3 With the increased number of chilâ€" dren on the roll at the schools, it draws the attention of the thoughtful to the fact that Weson will need adâ€" diional school accommodation. In fact the two classes in the high school means that our present accommodaâ€" tion is only a makeshift., Thus we have two rooms ready to be filled and no place to put them. .Of course at present the high school is being used, but this is only by special permission from the Minister of Education. Evâ€" erything in the building line is adâ€" vanced.. Will it be reduced within the next three years? This is a quesâ€" tion that none of us can answer. But we all know that the present rate of increase in the population of Weston makes it apparent that we will need a mew school before the prices go down, Is this not the time. to, lay plans? Some suggestion was made by the trustees to refit the old high school. This. looks. good under the present conditions. If the school could be renovated and made into an upâ€"toâ€"date school,i{would be an econâ€" omical buy. At any rate the school trustees hace to lay their plans for some definite policy in referencé to the school accommodation.
