Telephone No 55 Repatriation Committee The meeting, in connection with the above organization, was held on Monday evening in the council chamâ€" bers. It was a most disappointing meeting to our Reeve and Councillors. There were only fourteen people preâ€" sent including one lady, Mrs. Staunton. This meeting was. well adverdtised and it was the duty of everyone, who possibly could, to have been present. During the war everyone was very patriotic, bonds, economy, sockâ€"knitâ€" ting, etc., and garden parties, and all sorts of entertainments for returned men were the order of the day, but now is the time to show our patrotism. The war is over, and those who have fought for us, must be recognized and helped to positions again. Barrister, Solicitor,; Notary, Etc. Those who have died for us, have dependents to be cared for, andâ€"those who have become incapacitated have to‘be looked after. These men give their time and abiliâ€" ty to serve our interests, and we ought not to think that in electing them, our responsibilities end. Therefore let us always be ready to attend when_callâ€" ed upon to give up our time in the interests of our town. J. W. McFarland In future, when a public meeting is called, let us do our best to make a record atetndance and give our counâ€" cil our loyal support and coâ€"operation. ‘In a community of almost 2000 peoâ€" ple, it certainly is a disgrace that only 14 people had sufficient interest in our returned men to attend this meetâ€" ing. This enjoyment, right at home, is due to the effort of the council, who made such a thing posâ€" sible. The rink is lit up by clectric lamps and gives Eighth Street quite a festive appearance at night. Had it been possible to have used it soonâ€" er in the season, our . local band would have supplied the music at the formal opening. The Premium list of the New Toâ€" ronto Horticultural Society for the coming season will be out this week. See to it that you get a copy. Make your selections early and build up the organization with a membership fee. A musical sketch will be given by the pupils of the school in the audiâ€" torium, 5th ave., on Friday night, Feb. 14th. This promises to be one of the leading events and very one should make an effort to be on hand. In every community there are to be found @a few "wet blankets," who seem to live only for the purpose of damping the ardour of the majority. If they would only let the warmth of the sunshine sof love ~and altruism shine on them, how much better they would feel) themselves and how much happier they would make all they come in contact with! te From our experience of last sumâ€" mer, when several times the lifeâ€"sayvâ€" ing crew at the Island had to be sent for,â€"would it not be a possible and a wise thing to consider the‘ advanâ€" tage of keeping a life boat, say at our waterworks, so that anyone in danger on our Lake in our neighborhood might have immediate assistance? A strong and powerful telescope would be a useful adjunct to the boat. The society is planning to have difâ€" ferent lecturers give lectures on the different subjects covered> by Hortiâ€" culture, and in‘ the autumn hopes to hold a show. ho in Mr. Millard, our J. P., has got quite settled in his beautiful bungalow on Eighth Street. He has named his homé St. Julien, in loving memory of his two young sons who gave their lives for their country‘s honor. Mrs. Sylvester has opened a boardâ€" ing house on Sixth Street, where meals can be hadvat reasonable prices. After the business meeting the members present held a progressive euchre. There were 44 members present and eleven tables were used. Two prizes were given, one for ladies and one for gentlemen, the fortunate winners being Mrs. A. Taylor and Mr. J. McMullen, Mr. Fenwick was the guest of Mr and Mrs. Dyer this week. The members of the Horticultural Society met in the school on Thursâ€" day evening, the 6th of this month. The business part of the meeting dealt principally with the offering of a premium list to the members. There was also a committee appointed to The aims of this society, as I menâ€" tioned last week, are to promote inâ€" terest in fruit, flowers, and vegetaâ€" bles, and to beautify the home surâ€" roundings, thereby beautifyir;lg the whole town. Councillors Harlock and Wilson with Mr. Telfer, Clerk. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and adopted. Mr. Bates and Mr. Freeman spoke to the council on the matter of sewers for Louisa street and Warden _ street, respectively. The mayor promised attention to these as soon as working conditions became possible. Mr. W. W. Burgess addressâ€" ed the mayor on the subject of qualiâ€" fications required for holding office on the council, the mayor replying that the low assessment on properties no doubt, made it hard for a good numâ€" ber of men, who were_eminently fitted for the position, to â€"qualify and exâ€" pressed the opinion that a man with an equity of from $1000 to $2000 in his property, surely, had enough at stake in the town to satisfy the reâ€" quirements. Mr. R. Waites interpolâ€" ated a remark about men qualifying on the property of their wives and thought the law at fault in that reâ€" spect. Mr. J. Murphy thought that things were better left alone, or he added, we‘ll be having the woman on the council.. The next order of busâ€" iness was then called. Mr. Moebus, of Toronto, asked a question or two reâ€" garding the building byâ€"law and was referred by the mayor to the building inspector. A delegation from the school trustees, accompanied by Mr. L. Campbell, County .School Inspecâ€" tor, appeared with a request for deâ€" bentures to be issued for the sum of $55,000, to be spent on providing an addition to the public school. Mr. ~G. R. Gauld introduced Mr. .Campâ€" bell and the latter gentleman addressâ€" ed the council and pointed out the very urgent need of more room for the accommodation of the scholars and aiso stated that two more teachers were required. The number of pupils on the roll was close upon 500, and the number per room was 59.7, which Mr. Campbell stated, was more than any otherâ€"school in York County andâ€" 19.7 more than the educational law is supposed to allow. Mr. Campbell had much praise for the management of the school, and stated that Mimico school was second to none in York in general proficiency. In reply. to a duestion by Reeve Coulton, Mr. John Page, Secretary of the Board, stated that it was the intention to complete four rooms only at the present time, though the addition would contain seven rooms and two small rooms, which would be used for various purâ€" poses. The mayor, in replying to the delegation, said that the sum asked for was a very large one and in view of the fact that a large amount of: money was required for the‘ building of good roads in the town, felt that the council. would require time to conâ€" sider. carefully the request, and also referred to the very large shrdlu$ gat, ing. material at the present time and urged the members of the board to cut down as low â€" as possible the amount required. After a short disâ€" cussion the matter was left over to the next meeting. Three applications were received for the position of asâ€" seors, namely Mr. J. Barnum, who has held the position for the last 4 years, Mr. A: Coxhead, and Mr. G. Sayce. Mr. Barnum was reâ€"appointed at a salary of $300.00.. For the position of town constable, eight applications were reâ€" ceived.© Mr. J. McAllister, Humber Bay, Mr. J. Banks, Mr. Wm. Douglas and Mr. T. Doherty, of Mimico, P. C. Morgan and Stanley Jones, of Toronâ€" to, Mr. Andrew Lyttle, Humber Bay and Mr. J. B. Reimer, Mimico. The applications will be dealt with at a ;special meeting to be held on Wedâ€" nesday. ‘The matter of cleaning out ditehes, etc., was then gone into, on a report m%deby Reeve Coulton. The accounts.having been examined by the Finance. Committee,. were ordered to be paid, amounting to geng'fal, $1996. 32, fuel, $634.42, making a total ‘of $2630.74. . Meeting then adjourned."~ There.was considerable talk about the schoolâ€" accommodation question and â€"the new addition that is proposâ€" ed. / Some wanted to have the quesâ€" tion submitted to the people. Others feel that there should be a second school built across the track for those in the upper end. This will receive consideration at the hands of the council £nd the board. With the appointment of the new assessor for the year will there be a close ‘check on the assessuwnt this year? There is no use in raising a big talk and then fall down on it. Mimico should be assessed on an equal basis from one part to the other. This will be done, no doubt, this year, by the assessor. It will remove that litâ€" tle feeling that is now abroad about some not paying their share. BRYERâ€"To Mr. and Mrs. Geo. E. Bryer, a son, on Monday, February 10th, 1919. MIMICO Do It Now!
