se l | C 4st N\ Ed E‘.ï¬ii ts 25 The time was now approaching for ‘Israel to enter the Promised Land. Joshua sent two spies into Canaan, who must have swum across the torâ€" _rent of the Jordan flood, for there _was no other means of crossing. dry season the river at the fords is only about 100 feet wide, and from 3 to 5 feet deep; but so rapid as to "scour along between muddy banks, whitening into foam, intent only on its own work, which for ages by the decree of the Almighty has been that of separation." Three Days of Preparation These days were full of preparation for thescrossing of the river, notwithâ€" stam}ï¬xg the seeming impossibility. «zf~*~, The Wonderful Scenes Early next morning the people "break camp, pack their goods, form in line of march and move down to the very edge of the broad, flowing river." The priests, bearing the ark of the eonvenant; the symbol of (iod‘s preâ€" sence, came down to the river‘s edge. For these either the people made an opening, or the ark was above or beâ€". low the mass of the people. There was no pillar of cloud or of fire now| to guide them. Harry Stotham, of Georgetown, had his ear badly cut when he was struck by a hockey puck. In front of them rolled the muddy, rapid torrent of the Jordan, swollen to overâ€"flowing from the melting snows of the Lebanon mountains. In the The first move was from Shittim to a lower level near the river, "and all the children of Israel lodged there beâ€" fore they passed over." The two spies brought back an enâ€" eouraging report that ‘"all the inhabiâ€" tants of the country do faint because of us." Fourth Condition, vs. 7, 8, was the same as that which Moses urged in his last address to the people, and is as true toâ€"day as 3000 years ago. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt mediâ€" tate therein day and night. Patriotism is closely allied to heroâ€" ism. Patriotism is to be far more cherished in peace than in war; it is more difficult, more costly to the patâ€" riot, and requires a higher type of courage. . To do right when others do wrong, to withstand the tide of false opinion, to stand alone for principle. Joshua was great because he was under Divine guidance, taught by Diâ€" vine wisdom, and, therefore, humble and strong. Courage is not ignorance ofâ€"danger. The bravest soldier is the one who sees most clearly the, danger into which, nevertheless, he is resolutely pressing, without hesitation. Trueâ€"Hearted Patriotism Patriotism is love of ane‘s country; the passion which moves a person to serve his country, either in defending it from invasion or in protecting its rights, and maintaining its laws and institutions. His age when he took command as general and crossed the Jordan was 83 years. At that time he began his greatest work. But his whole life previous to this was a preparation, an absolutely necessary preparation, for theé.â€"work. Joshua now comes to the reward of his faithfulness as one who obeys orders. By obeying he has learned to command. By faithfulness in little things he is able to do great things. This is the only ladder that may be climbed to the best. His Ancestry. He was an Ephraiâ€" mite, a descendant of Joseph through Ephriam. His father‘s name was Nun, and his grandfather, Elishama, wasâ€"a captain of the army of the Ephâ€" raimites, 40,500 in number, at the orâ€" ganization of the Israelites soon after the Exodus. He must have been born in Goshen, where his parents were in slavery. His Name was originally Hoshea, the same as the prophet Hosea, signiâ€" fying "salvation‘" or "help." To this was added afterward "Je" for Jehoâ€" vah, and the name became Jehoshua, "Jehovah is salvation," shortened to Joshua, from which came its Greek form in the Septuagint, Jesous, Jesus. It is an excellent thing to have a name which we are to strive â€"to live up to. f The Death of Moses ‘"And Moses went up ..~.... unto the mountain of Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is over against Jericho. And the Lord showed him all the land"‘ of Palestine. "And the Lord said unto him, This is the land I sware unto Jach, saying, I will give it unto thy seed." No one ever knew the place of his burial and for several reasons it was well that the place was unknown. The Fiery Serpents The Israelites rebelled. They were punished by deadly fiery serpents, ‘"the burning ones," which killed many of the people. Moses made a serpent ‘of brass, placed it on a pole, and evâ€" ery one who had been bitten was cured if he had faith enough to look at the serpent of brass. f To Palestine In our last lesson we left the Isâ€" raelites at Kadesh*barnea on the borâ€" der between Southern Palestine and the Great Desert. They had arrived there about fiften months after the Exodus, and remained 38 years, leavâ€" ing it nine months before taking posâ€" session of Palestine. § The Sin of Moses In the wilderness of Zin the Israceâ€" lites came to Meribah, ie., "Strife." Here was a waterless region, and they bitterly charged their thirst to Moses. God told Moses‘and Aaron to take their wonderâ€"making rod, gather the people together, "and speak to. the rock before their W es," and water would come forth, &ï¬e before in a like case of need. Buw_Moses smote the rock with his rod twice, passionâ€" ately, and the water came forth abundantly. _ The crossing of the Jordan was on the 10th day of the first of their year, i.e., the last of March or early in April; the exact day varying as does our Easâ€" ter. Place.â€"The Isracelites were encampâ€" ed at Shittim, one, of the higher broad §paces between the river Jordan and the mountains of Moab, about opposâ€" ite Jericho, on the easternp bank of the river. This tract has a preadth of four or five miles, The Lesson in its Setting Timeâ€"The death of Moses, B. C. 1459 â€"(Beecher). Others â€" make it perhaps 1250 B. C. Joshua became Israel‘s leader at the death of Moses. It was 40 years after the Exodus. The S. 8. Lesson WEDNESDAY, MARCH 5TH, 1919 GOLDEN TEXTâ€"Be strong and of a good courage.â€"Josh. 1: 6.
