The officers of the Mimico Chap- ter of the Royal Arch Masons at their inaugural meeting presented the pre- siding officer, M. E. Comp. Tinker, first Principal, with a basket of roses. Should there not be a. little more activity shown in the fire brigade? The company should be thoroughly organized and trained in their duties. Some arrangements should be made to hold practices and also the fire en- gine should be tested at least once a week to see that everything is right. No doubt this will all be done, but it should not be left too late. I rose with great alacrity To offer her my seat, 'Twas a, question whether she or I Should stand upon my feet. ---Cortae11 Widow. IN THE MATTER of the Applica- tion of the Village of New Toronto under section 20 of "The Municipal Art," to be erected into a Town under the name ot "New Toronto." "My hunger is appeased; I just ate 30 cents' worth of grub." 'Thirty cents worth?" "Yeh, but it cost me $1.26." Have you noted how the roads on the back streets are graded up? It makes it Very hard to pass anyone on a wet day. The clay that is peculiar to this town makes it {may to slide down the side to the ditch and stay there a few hours. The Ontario. Railway and Municipal Board hereby appoints Friday, the Twenty-eighth day of November, A. D. 1919, at the hour of half-past Two o’clock in the afternoon at its Cham- bers, in the Legislative Buildings, in the City of Toronto, for the hearing herein. Dated at Toronto this Eighteenth day of November, A.D. 1919. H. C, SMALL, It is well that everyone who has not paid their taxes should do so be- tore Thursday the 20th. This is the last day as set by the by-Iaw when the collector is to receive taxes at the present rate. After this date there will be added another 5 per Cent. to all unpaid taxes. This is only good tor a few days. The collector has the power to destrain for the taxes. It is thus very bad business not to make the effort to pay your taxes by Thursday. If you do not happen to have the ready cash arrange with the bank for it., It will be the cheapest in the end. Up to date there has been a wonderful response to the tax no- tices this year. At the present‘time there has been more money collected than at any previous period in the history of the old system or of the new as tried last year. This speaks well for the system and the effective- ness of the collector. Mimico Avenue is now completed and the road opened up for full traN fie. Many persons are disappointed with the road as it now stands. They feel that it will not stand up under the heavy traffic that will pass over it. This is something that time alone will tell. It was on the strong recom- mendation of the county engineer, Mr.' James, that this road was built as it is. He is looked upon as an au- thority. He may have the theory, but the theory does not appear to be working out in practice. The same kind of a roadway built upon the Weston Road this year is not standing up. It is to be hoped that Mimico Avenue will stand up better than the road just mentioned. Road building is something that requires a. lot ot studying. Conditions locally must be considered. Traffic must be noted. Drainage and other items play a large part in the local road conditions. What may appear to, be a success in one part of the county may prove a. failure in another. It is up to paid authorities to study these conditions and make experiments so that muni- cipalities may no't waste their money. Roads built to-day should be built to stand. Each day sees greater development in Mimico. The shore road is becom- ing built up. A year ago there was many a, vacant lot. To-day these are all filled up with new houses. Other lots are being made'reedy for founda- tions. It is also to be noted that the class of house that is being erected in, this district is of the very best. Nothing under $5,000 buildings are being put up. It means that this will be the real class district ot Mimico. There is another step, however, that should he taken along here. Some uniformity should be observed to have a straight street line made. At the present time the houses are being set so that they square with their lots. No consideration is given to the other fellow. This could be overcome with a little thought, It would also be a grand/idea to now plant trees along this section. This would insure this part as one of the finest places along the highway.
