The whole matter was cleared up to the satisfaction of all and here we may say that Reeve Lovejoy proved himâ€" self at Monday‘s meeting to be a man of no mean diplomacy. He was placâ€" ed in a position that many a brave man would have flinched from, but his wonderful and magnificient tact controlled the meeting and everything went smoothly. A resolution â€" was passed requesting that legislation be introduced to provide for the election The ratepayers‘ proposal regards the Fire Brigade as put forth by their President was not at all feasible and would incur to heavy an expense on the community. This was felt to be the case by nearly all present. No other town has ever attempted to have a paid fire brigade. Council Meeting The New Toronto Town Council met in«the Council Chambers.on Monday, Dec. Ist, at 7.45 _ p.m. ~All the memâ€". bers were present. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and apâ€" proved. Communications from a numâ€" ber of people were read. The case of the Chinaman, Lee Wing, who was injured about 2% yrs. ago at the rush hour, came up. He had his leg brokâ€" en by the street car and he claimed damages from the Council, Radial Railway and Dominion Construction ,Co., jointly. It was, however, proved that the fault was his own and the case was dismissed with costs. The Chinaman, however, has since disapâ€" peared so the Solicitor‘s fees fell back on the Corporation for payment. Genâ€" eral accounts were passed for $266.â€" 07; hydro and water accts., $13,103,â€" 66; ~sea wall and intake, $3,653.87; loca limprovements, $4,729.90.. New Toronto shareof debenture and mainâ€" tenance of joint sewage disposal plant $6,7182.84. Permission was given to Messrs. McDonald, Carmen & Mudge Ltd. to connect 9. inch sewer, from their property to 9th Strect. This property was theold leather mill on 8th Street and this new firm from Boston are opening up as a finishing plant, putting the finishing touches on the leather. There was a letter from the Soldiers‘ Comforts Associaâ€" tion formally handing over the balâ€" ance of their funds to the Municipalâ€" ity for the payment of the Memorial Fountain. The Couneil accepted same and are getting ahead with the prepâ€" aration of the lease so tkat everyâ€" thing will be in readiness for the erecâ€" tion o fthe fountain as soon as it is! delivered. The Fire Brigade question was settled. The fre truck is now ready for use and all necessary _equipment has been installed. The Volunteer Fire Brigade are thoroughâ€" ly organized and one member of the Brigade will be on duty every night at the garage in case of a call. The question of the alarm was discussed at this meeting. of the Municipalities using hydro eelctric energy, that the Board conâ€" sist of three members with Sir Adam Beck, KB,, as permanent chairman, one member from the Municipalities and one member from the Governâ€" ment, theterm of office be not less than six years. The Byâ€"law for the exemption of taxes for returned men owning houses not exceeding in value $3000 was held over till 1920. A Byâ€" law was passed to authorize an agreeâ€" ment to be signed by the Reeve and Clerk for the purchase from the Facâ€" tories Service Ltd. the water works franchise and all its assets for $5000. A Byâ€"law was passed for the taking of the votes of electors on aJnuary 1st to borrow $5000 by the issue of debentures on the Corporation for the Notice is hereby given that a Byâ€" law was passed by the Municipal Council of the Village of New Toronto on the Third day of November, 1919, providing for the issue of debentures to the amount of $1500.00 for the purâ€" pose of fire protection and that such Byâ€"Law was registered in the Regiâ€" stry Office for the Registry Division of the East and West Riding of the County of York on the Twelfth day of November, 1919. We are glad to see such a spirit of unity existing in New Toronto and earnestly hope that all citizens will work to get New Toâ€" ronto raised again to a city. Our Reeve should give us a holiday in commemoration of this great event. On Nov. 27th the new fire truck arrived here, which is an ideal imâ€" provement on the old horse and wagâ€" on, At 8.30 Ritchie & Ramsay Co. sent in a fire alarm, which called out the new truck as a fire test. A run was then made out at Long Branch and Mimico. We congratulate Chief Louden and his staff on their promptâ€" ness and efficiency and wish them evâ€" ery success and support. We are pleased to report on the reâ€" turn of Mr. Conn, manager of the Merchants Bank, who has been on a month‘s holiday. Mr. Conn is looking wellâ€"~after his holiday and we feel sure he will give us again that attenâ€" tion we so freely had from him. We wish him good health ard every sucâ€" cess. Methodist Church Captain R&wson, returned chaplain, preacked in ou rlocal chureh on Sunâ€" day last.. His discourse was much apâ€" preciated and the church, as usual now, was filled. All the week beginâ€" ning Dec. 1st, special evangelistic serâ€" vices will be held, the pastor, the Rev. E. Harold Toye, B.A., preaching each evening. The men of the church conâ€" gregation have organized a Brotherâ€" hood and will meet every Sunday at 3.30 p.m. This is a real community Brotherhood. Anyone is free to join whether he is a member of the church or not. Their aim is the apâ€" plication of the preachings of the Christ to practical purposes. All men are cordially invited to join. on Sundays. Of course, we know that Hamilton is not dry as yet, but is there not enough water here in the lake to quench their thirst instead of going to Hamilton to wet their whistâ€" les.
