In making an emergéncy stop, leave the clutch engaged, apply the foot brake, and pull the hand brake; but do not "lock the wheels." . Keep the wheels rolling; otherwise there is danger that the car might slfde or skid. d. In ordinary driving, do not use the brakes oftener than necessary; regulate the speed of the car as much as possible by use of the throttle. If the car is equipped with a foot throttle use it in preference to the hand throtâ€" tle. This leave the hands freer to operate the gears and the steering wheel. \, f c. In going down steep hills or when descending ordinary hills with a heavy load, put the gears in intermediate or low speed at the top of the hill and leave the clutch engag(-;d. Shut off the gasoline throttle and, if desirable, turn off the ignition switch. Construction of the new fish hatchâ€" ery at the Soo, the: largest and most modern plant in the Dominion, is so far advanced that hatching may pro ceed this spring. a. When coming to a stop on a straightâ€"away, ishut off the gasoline throttle and leave the clutch engaged until just before you come to a stop; this method of stopping is especially advisable in wet weather, because it lessens the tendency of the car to skid. It also helps to distribute the braking power equally, and assists the action of the brakes. Do not shut off the ignition until after you have stopped; it may be necessary to make a quick start. Find out the idling speed mainâ€" tained by your car when the gasoline throttle is closed, then‘ never (except in emergency cases) try to use your brakes when the clutch is engaged and the car is travelling slower than the idling speed. b. In going down an ordinary hill, leave the clutch engaged and close the gasoline throttle. This helps cool the engine and also makes it unnecessary to use the brakes. It is sometimes deâ€" sirable to turn off the ignition switch; this further cools the engine and adds to the braking‘ power. 8. After the brakes are adjusted So they ar\e neither too tight nor too loose, they should be tested every 1000 muiles, or at least onee a month, to make sure that the braking power is equally divided between the two rear wheels.. Many cars skid, not only beâ€" cause of unequal division of braking cause of uneqpal division ofâ€" braking power. Jack up rear wheels and apply‘! brake far enough so. that it is just possible to turn one wheel by hand. Adjust brake on other wheel so the same amount of energy is ‘required to turn that wheel by hand. 9. Do you apply your brakes pro perly when "on the road?" b. On axle or wheel drum brake where eaualizer is used, apply brake when engine is still. Adjust equalizer until it is parallel with axle. d. On internal type of wheel drum brake it is necessary to remove rear wheels. Adjust cam plates, and adâ€" justing nuts, also equalize length of brake rods. â€" strength,.â€" ‘ensures pain $5¢2 box. . direct from our la bell Drug Co., 91 real. T. All drivers should keep the brakes adjusted properly. â€" Brakes should not drag; if they do they will heat up and be worn down unnecesâ€" sarily. Brakes should not be . too loose; loose brakes do not act quickly enough. . Different adjustments are made for different types of rakes: a. On the shaft brake there is a nut on the brake band which can be adâ€" justed to make the brake neither too tight nor too loose. Brake rod can be turned either to right or left to make it\pro‘per length for effic\ient use of brake: ; _ c. On external type of wheel drum brake tighten or loosen adjusting nut on brake band, and equalize length of brake rods. e. Make regular system inspection a habit. DEVAN‘S FRENEHN PMLS b. Brakes squeal because they are glazed or when improperly adjusted. Squealing can often be stopped by reâ€" moving wheels and roughening the brake lining with a. file. c. If the brake lining is worn down to the rivets, sink the rivets still farâ€" ther or have the brakes relined. d. Wipe off and oil the brake meâ€" chanism every 500 miles, or at least once‘ a month. = day. Before going half a block from the garage, make a service test by throwing out the clutch and applying the brakes. If possible, select a dry spot for making this test. .Under no cireumstances should the car be taken farther if the brakes are not operating properly. Drive back to the garage and, see that the faults are corrected before driving out again. Practical Pointers â€"for the Motorist a. Once in two months remove the rear wheels and wash the brake lining in kerosene. This removes all oil and grease which, if present, ftake the "bite" out of the brakes. Never oil brake lining. 2. Automobile brakes have a definâ€" ite relation to safety. Important points are: 4. Only an experienced mechanic should instal brake linings. He should be sure the lining is properly stretched to avoid wrinkling. The rivets should be properly cquntersunk; otherwise the metal of the rivetis will seore the brake drum and the brakes may not hold properly. 5. To keep the brakes in good cOn dition: ) a. See that a good type of brake linâ€" ing is selected. b. Make sure that Dbrake lining is properly installed. c. Keep the brakes in good operatâ€" ing condition. d. Make frequent tests for proper brake adjustment. e. Apply brakes properly when "on the road." 3. There are many types of brake lining on the market. Do not use linâ€" ings that are too soft or too thick:; such linings easily become matted and necessitate almost_ constant adjwstâ€" ment. Good liningsyare woven with plenty of asbestos;â€" some also have copper wire woven in. For Sale by C. R.
