Their achievement was the last prizes He pictured the view of Weston from the hill by the cemetery and the great disappointment that meets the eye as you cross the river and see the buildings on the one side and the dump on the other. . This is beâ€" ing changed through the efforts of the Horticultural Society and the coâ€" operation of the town. By the co‘copâ€" eration of all there will be a changed town in a few years. ; Mr. Wright Mr. Wright told â€" of his first visit to Weston some twentyâ€"two years ago. . His point was ‘that first imâ€" pressions are lasting. Every effort should be made to see that the natâ€" ural. beauty of the town is well deâ€" veloped. It is the trees and the flowers that make the beauty spots. Mr. J. P. Allen presented the next prize and the Rev. McKay presented The prizes were as follows: 1st, An electric floor lamp complete; 2nd, a silver tea service and tray; 3rd, a lunâ€" cheon set of Madiera mats; 4th, a dozen silver spoons; 5th, a silver bake dish; 6th, a curatte in m&hogany; 7th, a silver cake plate; 8th, a silver pice stand and§Pyrex plate. Mr. J. M. Pearen Mr. Pearen, when called upon, told ofâ€" how nearly the campaign â€"had failed on the first night.. To use his own terms, he stated that the whole campaign could have been bought for 37c just three weeks ago. But it was the great persistence of the captains that it had been turned into & vicâ€" tory. it had been the habit to use that beautiful valley as a dumping ground. The old society had reclaimed the grounds about the town hall, erectâ€" edâ€"tennis courts and the band stand. The Horticultural Society have in mind something that will be big but as yet have not accomplished as much as the Improvement Society did amid all its difficulties. ~.It was the general acceptance by the citizens of Weston of what the society had done in the past that made it possible to succeed. He reâ€" called, however, that the old town improvement society had laid_ the foundation and had done a lot of work in the earlier days. He recalled how that Weston naturally was situated in a valley full of beauty. For years dMotali_ ns esral $1832 Mr. Roy of the C.C.M. then made the presentation of the first three prizes and told / of how â€" proud Weston should; be of the ‘captains who soâ€" successfully put over this big campaign. He also thought that the town owed. considerable to the Horâ€" ticultural Society. FKairâ€" Board~ â€"... . County Council .. Miss" D. Moffatt, .. .â€". Miss J. McLellan ... Miss G. Craven ... Miss I. Hutchinson . Miss E) Shaw)â€"..... Miss M. Martin .... Miss J,. wright ... Miss V. Trinkwon .. § We have seen a number ofâ€" big 2 | campaigns put across in Weston, and : | the â€"other. centres. Each of these : | past campaigns has shown that there : | is considerable ability that can lead: : | Whirlwind campaigns have beer carâ€" : | ried ‘successfully, but the fatest sucâ€" ; | cess surpasses them all. The great ; | membership drive for the Weston ; | Horticultural Society reached its cliâ€" i | max on ,Monday night. The captains ; | and their workers were the guests of _ | the directors of the Horticultural Soâ€" _| cietys. Some 125 persons assembled @| in the Old Presbyterian Church, and _| there heard the returns of the camâ€" _paign. The captains received their | prizes, a splendid â€"musical program was given,. and dainty retreshments were served. It was a fitting climax to the big drive. It was well dons, . as all matters along this line are when undertaken by this society, Weston can indeed be proud of those who handle the affairs of the Horticulturâ€" al Society here. Mr. A. L. Campbell Speaks Mrs.â€"G. M. Lyons, president of the society, called the meeting. to order after the organ recital given by Mr.. Wetherston. In taking the chair, she told ofâ€"the work that had been accomplished in the present camâ€" paign. In 1919, with conditions difâ€" ferent, money more plentiful, and unâ€" der a great patriotic wave, the memâ€" bership had been raised to some 1741. $500.00 .was spent®~at that time for the planting of trees in France. This year, with conditions changed; conâ€" siderable unemployment and an opâ€" tion list that was selfish, we have surpassed the old mark. While the list we say is selfish, still this is true only in our community way of thinkâ€" ing. This campaign has been built for the purpose of beautifying â€" our town. Mr. A. L. Campbell was then introduced, and in his eloquent choice of language gave expression to sentiâ€" ments that found many interested lisâ€" teners. He told of the great changes that were apparent, how the garden was now not looked upon as someâ€" thing occupying valuable space. It was looked upon as something that f held charms and appealed to men. | His quotations from the great poets | of the world confirmed this idea. j While these young ladies, by their persistent efforts, have relieved us of | many dollars, still they have turned |â€" them so that they will pfoduce life. Our school yards have been made | beautiful by the gardens that surâ€" | 1 round a number of our schools about | 1 the country., It is this work in the | 1 garden, on the streets and in our | ! town that makes life more full of joy. | I 1832 the Total Membership \J 1 Mr. N.‘ J. McEwen,, in his usual | I efficient and business like manner, | < then made the official report of the | i campaign which lasted the three | t days. This reportâ€" did not cover the | 1 memberships that have been received | i since the campaign has closed. It | 1 was as follows: s Weston Enrolls Over Two Thouâ€" sand Members for Thisâ€" ; Branch HORTIGULTURISTS HAVE $887 357 296 216 156 103 89 53 100 50 25 Points 1838 1534 1376 1040 T10 462 392 220 GTRONG HOLD 1N WESTO ~We have lots of bright, safe light in every room in the houseâ€"in the yard and barns. Running water in the house and a laundry in the cellarâ€"an electric washing machine and ironâ€"power to run the churnâ€"cream separator, grindâ€" stone, in fact we do most of the chores by electricity. In view of the evidence that has been. presented, it is earnestly to_be hoped that the Government, in the forthcoming _ revision of the*=tariff, will make provision for such amendâ€" ments,to the Custems Act as may be necessary that the value of duty purâ€" poses shall not be less than cost of production of the imported goods (or of similar goods) to the manufacturer in the country of sexport and also to require, at the discretion of the Minister of Customs, that any or all invoices be accompanied. or suppleâ€" mented by an itemized statement of such cost; and that the expression ‘"cost of production" be definedâ€" to include the full cost of materials and fabrication and all costs in connection with finishing, preparing and packing . the goods for shipment, including selling and all other general expenses covering each and! every outlay, of whatever nature incident, to the proâ€" duction and sale of such goods by the. manufacturer, together with an addiâ€" tion to the whole of not less than ten per cent. | , You won‘t know what you‘re missing until you get a Silent Alamo for your farm. You can see one in operation and find out all about it at It is striking evicence of the inaâ€" dequacy of Canada‘s present. "dumpâ€" ing" selause that many of the. bricfs presented to the Tariff Committee during the hearings throughout Canaâ€" da pointed out that the practice of "dumping" was prevalent and constiâ€" tuted a most serious menace to Canaâ€" _dian industries. It was abundantly demonstrated that the dumping reguâ€" lations were circumvented... Various devices, some of them exceedingly, inâ€" genious, have been resorted . to by manufacturers abroad in order to disâ€" pose of surplus stocks in Canada at "dump‘" prices, with a view to getting these, goods out of the country of manufacture and protecting their own home market. j HAVE every advantageâ€" every comfortâ€"every conâ€" â€"â€" venience they have in town and many they don‘t have. My wife is the happiest women in four counties. You cofldn‘t drive my children away with a machine gun. Life on our farm is one round of pleasure for every one since we installed the Sell my farm and move to town? No Chance! _ Why Should I? 2000 Members This Season. ' It was expressed that when all the returns are recorded that ‘there will be over 2000 members on the roll. This will make Westoh the largest soâ€" clety in Ontario. St. Thomasâ€"has at the present time some 2006 members, but ou{ returns will surpass them. The general outcome of the campaign means that there will be some big sum of money available for use in the town by the saciety. If the proâ€" gram that is in mind lis carried ‘out, Weston will be a centre of beauty in a short time. Do your part and beâ€" come a part in this great movement. Silent ALAMQO FARM ELECTRIC POWER AND LIGHT PLANT The program was given by Misses C. Packham, 8. Rowntree, G. Coulâ€" ter, Mrs: Meldrum,. and_ Mr.. C.â€" L Fraser, Mr. Miller and Mr. Morley. "Bhe evening was closed with a vote of thanks moved b§r Mr. Moffat and seconded by Mr. Harrison. \ The Mayor expressed â€" his~ sympaâ€" t};y with the splendid work that had been done. While the garden had an attraction for the mayor, he statâ€" ed that as an enthusiastic bowler» the greens called him there after business hours."* Still he has always found time to have his garden and take an interest . in . horticultural work. great because it embraced the whole town. | Nature has done more for Weston than man has done, was his remark when he spoke of the fine surroundings and focation. of the town. ‘This great spirit ofâ€" unity would be the inspiration for years to come. 4 & TIMES & GUIDE, WESTON What!
