She says this marked success is due to the fact that the hearts of the heathen have been opened to the Gospel through the famine relief given last winter. They are also encouraged by the warm welcome and eager help given by the Chinese Christians in each place they have visited. In one place they found that the most prominent workers in the native church were a young man and his wife. Deputy Reeve J. A. Macâ€" Donald, of York Township, objected to the byâ€"law on the ground that the council should have more details reâ€" garding what was to be done with the money. A resolution of confidence in the commissioners overruled _ his objection. _ * + Cuts in Road Expenditures Will Alâ€" low June Session of County Council . to Levy 4% Mills. The smallest county rate since the early days of the war, probably four and oneâ€"half mills, will be struck when the County Council meets in June.. The report of the finance comâ€" mittee, which will set the rate at about thnat level, was adopted a few minâ€" utes before the County Council adâ€" journed Saturday afternoon with little discussion. The finances of the county are in good shape, according to the auditors‘ report. Funds raised for the build= ing of a new registry office are still Last year $175,000 was spent on roads and in addition a special levy of $68,000 was made to cover some outstanding road debentures. This year the grant has been cut to $150,â€" 000 for road construction, and $16,000 for maintenance. Under the equaliâ€" zation for 1922, one mill represents a revenue of $73,000, The city of Toronto had considerâ€" able to do with the cuts in road exâ€" penditures, which made posSsible the low rate. Controller Thomas Foster and Finance Commissioner Ross, in a conference with the finance commitâ€" tee earlier in the session, urged the cutting of all road expenditures to which the city would be forced to conâ€" tribute.
