CThe. aAlarm: was sounded and the Mount Dennis fireâ€" men were at the"seene of the fire in less than five minutes, which was recâ€" ord time. Considéring that the alarm was sounded about 2.30, and ‘that‘ the firemep were all=in bed; and asleep. The fire got a good hold upon the buildings before the firemen arrived. The ‘firemen had a hard‘ tussle for some.time to get the fire under canâ€" trol, but when they did so they held it like iron mien. t Mount Dennis is reported to have one of ithe very best list of men on the firemen‘s list around, dnd they were nét slow cto "answer â€"this ~summons. People somehow do nat realize what a terrible, destmuctive thing fire. is. They do, it is true, realize to some exâ€" tent theâ€"damages ‘caused through it, but they do not realize theâ€" tense anxiety, the breathless waiting, and the terrible suspense which this brings on to those who are fightingâ€"orâ€"escapâ€" ing from the fire. Every possible care should be taken to prevent this deadly enemy from taking hold of our properâ€" ty, ~‘The damage is estimated â€" at about three thousand: dollars, which means that one of the citizens of our comâ€" munity has suffered a great loss. The barmns and garage were destroyed, also two cars and € Tacer. 3 +" The fire occeurred at a very early hour, and consequently more damage was done than would ‘otherwise have been had the fire started ~at a time when people were around the streets, when it most probably have been â€"deâ€" tected beforemuch damage was done. The sons of Canada who are sleeping peacefully after useful toil, no matter where they lie,â€"whether their restingâ€"place is fanned by the gentle zephyrs of rugged England,â€"decorated by the crimson poppy ol Flanders, or the fragrant lilies of France, or their recuiem sung hy the restless sea, matters notâ€"they are still our Comrades, outr Merocs and our Inspiration for the days and years to come.. They have reaped their harvestâ€"ours is vet to come and will be as we hew our path in the remaiming time allotted us. It\yis entirely a personal matter for thoughtful consideration and action, how to reach the goal of our desires by a united policy=â€" which wiall decide the happiness and welfare of so many, including the orphan, the widow, the afflicted, the flotsam and jetsam of war‘s despoiling hand. i ple, fure! â€" "We have also accepted the responsibility of aiding in establishâ€" ing national cohesion, in fostering a healthy expansion, and helping to restore. the sound cconomic condition which, our heritage of naâ€" tional wealth merits. 7 1 _To me the following lines seem to meet the case fittingly, both collectively and personally : _ i § ; Dasque, British Columbia, produces Epsom Salts. One lake is said to contain 6000.tons and is steadily growing. It sells at $60 a ton, but if you go to the comner druggist and ask for a package you will pay 10c for it. This, it has been calculated, is at the rate of $890 per ton.. With a sufficient market, B. C. would soon become wealthy out of this product alone. 3 It has been taken for granted that the planting of trees in Alâ€" berta was an experiment which gave little assurance of suecess. This notion has been disposed by a\farmer near Milo, in that: province. In 1911 he commenced planting. [Foday he ‘has handsome.groves which: giveâ€"shelter and conserve moisture. . He has also fruit trees and berry bushes that yield plenty of good fruit. â€" What this man has done others â€"can do if they try and persevere. & , Following his election as Dominion President of the G. "As overseas men we performed the first part of â€"our duty in France, and now, as exâ€"soldiers, we owe a second duty to Canada.
