These two men, Mike Schmidt and Carl Erickson, became "human guinea pigs" for a new serum experiment which might easily have meant their deaths, Selected from a group of 12 volunteers, these men received an injection of a serum to "cure" tuberculosis and a few days later were inoculated with enough deadly tuberculosis bacili to kill dozens of men unprotected by a serum. Six months later Schmidt and Erickson were declared to be in perfect health by examining physicians, signalizing the successful completion of the first human experiment with the new serum. The tuberculosis treatment is the discovery of Dr. H. J. Corper of the National Jewish Hospital, Denver, and his associates, and following this experiment it is hoped that a positive preventative has been found for the terrible white plague. Needless to say the two lifeâ€"termers have been pardoned. @Joommmemmemmmeemmmmmmemmenmmmmimmnnmminetmngtsommmmnemmetecinroererrinmncerrmmmmesenm Don‘t forget the benefit nights at A most successful Poultry Euchre Weston Theatre, on Jan. 7 and 8, was held under the auspices of Mapleâ€" under auspices Local Council of Womâ€" |hurst Lodge, Daughters of England, en, See Virginia Bruce in "Jane Eyre." in the Town Hall last Friday night. * 0 * o% \Prize winners were: 1st, Mr. McKinâ€" In the Baptist Church next Sunday |ney; 2, Mrs. Simpson; 3, Mrs. Bent; morning, Rev. Owing to the tragic accident of the late Fred Cripps of Maliton, the public presentation to this popular young couple, to be held in Malton Hall, was postponed. Arthur Deacon in the Mail and Empire, Toronto, writes of "From Rattlesnake Hunt to Hockey" as follows: Leading Book Review Praises Sports Volume of County Series Peel at Play Thoroughness is the note of William Perkins Bull‘s history of Peel. The second volume, which is on sport and entitled "From Rattlesnake Hunt to Hockey" (McLeod), covers the whole range of athletiecs from cock fighting to chess. Respecting the former there is a colored portrait of Red Robe, a bird undefeated from 1891 to 1900, and in connection with the latter pastâ€" time we are given an excellent story of a judge, whose attention was disâ€" tracted at a critical moment, and how he restored the balance. The lacrosse tradition has continued unbroken from Indian days,. There is also pole, baseâ€" ball, basketball and association footâ€" ball. As to the last, the men of the Horan family were numerous enough to form a formidable team. There is also curling, bowling, fishing, horse, bicycle and foot racing. Sir Henry Pellat appears in the canaryâ€"yellow tights in which he won face as a sprinter in 1876. Canadian housewives, particularly in the larger centres, are passing up a good bargain in not buying more Grade A Medium eggs, stated W. A. Brown, Chief of the Poultry Services of the Dominion Department of Agriâ€" culture, in commenting on the present egg market situation from the conâ€" sumer‘s viewpoint. _ __ _ Rugby recalls the virile days of Dr. Smirle _ Lawson. Brampton High School has lately been a factor in the Ontario championships. Cricket is upâ€" held at Appleby School. Skating and boating are for everybody‘s recreaâ€" tion. A nice touch of humor includes gang fights amon§l local sports. Golf cuts a wide swath with the Missisâ€" sauga, Lake Shore and Lakeview Clubs all in the County. A skeeton history of the game records, on page 172, what was paid for golf balls for the kinfi in 1457, and opposite is the reâ€" production in full color of a painting showing a player on Blackheath. His garments place him in the 18th cenâ€" tury. As we pass from Bisley championâ€" ships to boxing, and on to horseshoe pitching, far more familiar names are met than can be recorded here.
