New Year it is with the hope that true happiness will be realized this year. It is with the hope that each individual will be spared the unhappiness and sorrow which war and devastation bring. It is the sincere â€"wishâ€"ofâ€"this,â€"your â€"paper,; that thereâ€"shouldâ€"reign supreme throughout this community for each indiviâ€" dual and each home, the utmost in happiness and a-d;nnm around when I saw Mr. F.‘s truck stop right in front of St. John‘s Anglican Church, Main St. North. Then comes that well known gentleman of our town, Rev. Mr. Mackey. Here I see them loadâ€" mnbflxlfiubox.bul mllygn't you how many, but next thi I know, off they go, up to Albion Park, then back through first to one end of Weston then the other, leavâ€" ing a box at each home they called. And, by the way, Rev. Mackey is not afraid to carry a box either. Well done, Mr. Mackey, and your T!l‘l: past year has been a year filled with mixed experiences in the business world. Many of the large firms and industries have had a great volume of business with smaller returns. Other lines have reported an even break, and some have failed. In these three great classes there is a wealth of exâ€" perience to be gained by those who care to study W)udhnifi-umeqterthcynr 1940. Many who have been close students of business this year contentment for 1940. Â¥ear. Nineteen thirtyâ€"nine is drawing to a close, and jts difficulties and problems are history. Great hisâ€" torians have recorded the events of the past twelve â€"months and written their comments for posterity. A year ago the world looked forward to a bright new year and its opening months, though somewhat under a cloud, were filled with alluring prospects. As the year grew and aggression after aggression.was visited upon the world, it became increasingly apparent that those who believe that force is right would have to be strongly handled. As a result the last three months have been months of trying ordeals, months filled with sorrow, yet months which have shown that our people have fortitude and strength of chdracter to carry on to the successful elimination of those who uphold the ideal that might is right. As we wish you all a Happy Tuz words have become more or less commonâ€" place but when uttered with sincerity they convey â€"_. one of the greatest wishes which can be given to any individual or community. IS A good thing to begin the new year right. The ITboginm'n‘ of a new year is a starting point for all, an opportunity for the individual to look back over the past year and realize the mistakes made and the pitfalls encountered. Unless one profits by such exâ€" periences there is no use looking back. Those who do profit are those who, having looked back, make resoluâ€" tions ~to avoid â€"the pitfatls ~which â€"led â€"to â€"disaster; Resolutions for 1940 are indeed in order and require much consideration. The man or woman who can in all sincerity resolve to avoid the pitfalls of 1940 will be the better by the end of 1940, Young people‘s resolutions are very important as they have the opporâ€" tunity at this period of setting their faces steadfastly toward a definite principle. The ship which sails the sea without any port or destination is useless. Youth should make resolutions which will give their lives a definite purpose and tend to make this world a better world to live in for 1940. Resolutions kept will strengthen the character of youth and will have a direct influence for good throughout the community. Build 1940 with strong resolutions and a determinaâ€" tion to fulfil those resolutions. _ If this district is to reap benefits in 1940 it is necessary that merchants and manufacturers conâ€" aider the possibilities of the community and plan a systematic campaign to present their products to the public. Store fronts must be well kept: and well lighted; each piece of merchandise must have quality and true value; the inside of the store must be appealâ€" ing to the shopper. It is not enough that the proprietor know his mercHandise, but each salesman must be trained to know the value of the articles to be manuâ€" factured or sold. Care should be taken to see that the public is informed of the services and values available locally. As a matter of fact, few people like to go into a small store to look around, but when information regarding values there is given them through advertising mediums, they are brought to the smaller stores and get the habit of shopping locally, In this community thousands of dollars will be spent in 1940 by our citizens. If merchants and manufacturers want local business, now is the time to plan a systematic campaign to secure more of such business than they had in 1939. It has been done and can be done again by the aggressive, practical business man and manufacturer. "Make 1940 your banner year" is a good slogan to place before your staff and directorate. it was necessary to pay particular attention to the merchandise produced and sold, to the manner in Mummutomuflhudhfl.l& eral system of merchandising. Some firms who did succeed trace‘ their success to these main factors. Those firms which used all means available for the marketing of their various lines and at the same time kept their quality intact, were pleased with the results obtained and are laying plans for the further developâ€" ment of selling campaigns for the coming year. Locally, many of those business places which did not plan their year‘s work, and did not fully realize the possibilities of the community, did not have the volume of business possible otherwise. ventures it was necessary to pay strict attention to even the smallest detail. They realized through exâ€" perience that many a leak, though small, had to be blocked in order to secure success, * They discovered hn!cqlfiuh“:bmhcmdfidr Dec. 22; 1939 JUST ME.
