We see Him in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, probably one whom Jesus had cleansed and restored to citiâ€" zenship. There is every appearance of a feast going on. A woman enters. She carries with her a very valuable vase or box of ointâ€" ment. This she breaks and pours on the head of Jesus as He sat at meat. The house is filled with the odour of the ointment. Immediately there is an ¢éxpression of indignaâ€" tion. Why this waste? The generâ€" ous action of the woman is conâ€" demned, but here we see the judgâ€" ment of the Son of God. He upho!ds the action of the woman. He knows her heart and mind and generous nature, and gives her the joy of knowing that her gift is accepted and her work will be kept in everâ€" lasting remembrance. The godlike act arouses evil passions in the hearts of those who are covetous and selfish and evil thoughts call for revenge and the Lord is betrayed into the hands of His enemies. Judas is there and Satan is his Master. i _ .Wisely the Master prepares for the Passover. He knows the powers of evil are at work. His Time is at Our lesson today as given in the gospel of Matthew 26: 1â€"30, places us in view of the greatest event of this world‘s history. We see the author of life placed on the dock. We see the judge himself arraigned and the judgment set. The charge is all the world has gone after hirm. The call is heard. Hosannah to the Son of David, Hosannah in the highest. Save now, O King. The authorities under the domination of the adversary have assembled all the forcees of darkness to overâ€" throw the Maker, owner and govâ€" ernor of this world. They hope in their ‘blindness to seize and ‘take possession of every thing eyve can see or ear can hear and hold rule over the living and the dead. Jesus had been speaking: He had been telling them (see foregoing chapâ€" ters). He said the time had come. He says â€"now, The Son of man is betrayed to be crucified. Jesus is the Son of man.. He is also the Son of God. It is planned subtly to seize Him and secure the death penalty and upset once for all the kingdom of heaven and earth and all that is therein. Vain hope! Preâ€" tended defence. Our God is the Almighty One. The living One, He knows and weighs even the thoughts and intents of the hearts of all. The darkness and the light are alike to Him. tas Memory Verses.â€"O give thanks unto the Lord: for He is good. Ps. 107: 1. And all in their blindness will show forth that the Son of God is king. The disciples did as Jesus had appointed them and made ready the passover feast. And when evening was come He sat down with the twelve, and as they did eat He said, Verily I say unto you, One of: you shall betray me. And they: were exceedingly sorâ€" rowful and began everyone to say to Him, Lord, is it I? And He answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish the same shall betray me. The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto him by whom the Son of man is betrayed:.it had been good for him that he had not been born. Then Judas who had beâ€" trayed him, answered and said, Master is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said. Here we might go back two thousand. years, four thousand years from now. We see two aged people. Husband and wife. Many blessings have been accorded them. The most desirable in their minds has been witheld; they have not received from God the gift of a son. Many trials were given them and they still stand faithful to the God of their early choice. They believe that the God they worship will fulfil every promise and that they shall not only possess the land, but that their children shall be as the stars in heaven or the sand of the sea which cannot be numbered for mulâ€" titude. God fulfils his Word, a son is born. A call is made, Take now thy son, thine only son. Isaac, whom thou lovest, and offer him for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains, I will tell thee of. Christ Jesus, whose precepts sprang from his understanding of God, divine Principle, said to his followâ€" ers (John 15; 14), "Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoâ€" ever I command you." Whoâ€" ever ponders and obeys the commands of divine Love disâ€" covers the way of steady proâ€" gress and invariable health and happiness. He is saved the experience of unwise asâ€" sociations, grievous misunderâ€" standings, and patchedâ€"up quarrels. He proves with reâ€" joicing the truth of Mrs. Eddy‘s statement (Retrospecâ€" tion and Introspection, p. 76), "The spiritually minded meet on the stairs which lead up to spiritual love." In this meetâ€" ing there is no parting. â€"From The Christian Science Monitor One who understands, even in a small degree, the depth and tenderness of divine Love learns to epress and respond to lovingâ€"kindness, wherever expressed.â€" For him there is no monastic aloofness, friendâ€" lessness, loneliness. In the measure of one‘s dependence upon Deity, one proves himâ€" self a dependable friend. On page 100 of "Miscelâ€" laneous Writings" Mary Bakâ€" er Eddy writes: "P ure humanity, friendship, home, the interchange of love, bring to : earth _ a foretaste of heaven. They unite terrestriâ€" al and celestial joys, and crown them with blessings inâ€" finite." True resolves, put to use, develop stability and peace in one‘s character, one‘s home, one‘s social and busiâ€" ness relations. Wellâ€"temperâ€" ed qualities nullify temperaâ€" mental traits which wreck homes, traits such as dominaâ€" tion, subjection, selfishness, irresponsibility. _ To seek the spiritual heights of friendship is a divinely directed adventure. Whatever the strain that conâ€" fronts them, it welds more firmly those links that hold. It is well for friends to upâ€" hold one another even as do mountaineers, roped together for safety during a precarâ€" ious ascent. Human beings need the outstretched hand which succors whoever reachâ€" es for it from the depths of sorrow or the quicksands of sin. God provided a lamb. He saw in Abraham a kindred spirit, a soul in harmony with His own. Years passed on. The children of Abram multiplied. They fell into the hands of one who knew not the Lord,. A people who were hateful to every god but their own. They were murderers, sought to destroy and erush all who were opposed to them in thought, word and deed. A testing time came. The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob sent to the dictator and tyrant saying, Let my people go! Egypt heeded not. She saw the poor slave people preâ€" paring for a feast. Taking from the sheepfolds a lamb or kid, bleatâ€" ing in helplessness. Egypt saw the sacrifice slain, and the blood sprinkled on the doorposts and the lintels. The night passed and in the morning there was a great cr5lr. In every house in Egypt, from palace to hut the first born was slain. God‘s people, obedient to His testimony were saved when the angel of death passed by and saw the blood, the blood of the lamb and the people found salvation. Deliverance came. Down through the ages the memorial feast was held. In our lesson today, verse 17, ‘it is said, On the first day of unâ€" leavened bread the disciples came to Jesus and said to Him, Where do you wish that we may prepare the passover for you to eat. Jesus said to them, Go into the city to a cerâ€" tain man and say to him, Our masâ€" ter says my time has come, I will observe the passover with my disâ€" ciples at your place. His disciples did as Jesus commanded and preâ€" pared the passover. When evening had come Jesus was reclining with His twelve disciples, and while they were eating, He said, Truly I say to you, One of you will betray me. â€"And they felt very sad and began to say to Him, one by one, Why, is it I, my lord? Jesus ansâ€" wered and said, He who dips his hand with me in the dish he will betray me. The Son of man is goâ€" ing through just as it is written concerning Him but woe to the man by whose hand the Son of man is betrayed! It would have been far better for that man:never to have ‘been born. Then Judas the traitor answered and said,â€" Master, perâ€" haps it is I? Jesus said to him, You say that. While they were eating, Jesus took bread and blessed it and He broke it and. gave it to His disâ€" ciples and said, Take eat. This is (represents) my body. Thenâ€" He took the cup and gave thanks and gave it to them and said, Take drink of it all of you. This is (repâ€" resents) my blood of the new covenant which is shed for many, for the remission of sins. But I say to you, from now on, I shall not drink from this fruit of. the vine until the day when I drink it anew with you in the kingdom of God.
