How many agencies are included in the United Welfare Chest? There are 104 social welfare and health organizations in the Chest. Sixtyâ€"six of these, financed by the Chest, were previously members of one: of. the three federations (Protestant, Catholic, Jewish) or zenwd singly. The remaining irtyâ€"eight do not share financialâ€" ly, but do plan with the financed members to coâ€"ordinate and imâ€" prove social welfare work in Toâ€" ronto and district. What do the various agencies do? ‘There are 24 agencies for child care, 27 for youth service, 14 for old folks, 7 for family welfare and 11 for health and hospital services. ‘This totals more than 66, because in many cases one agency includes several services. What are the advantages of a United Welfare Chest? 1) Combining all social welfare agencies in a central organizaâ€" tion means great convenience for you because you contribute just once, to all services. 2) It means a tremendous saving in campaign and administraâ€" tive costs. 3) It prevents duplication of serâ€" vices and enables longâ€"term M planning to be carried out intelligently. How can you be sure that the money raised will be allocated efficiently? _ _ Gan you answer these questions about your Welfare Chest ? ‘The Central Planning Body of the Chest sees that there is no overâ€" lapping and no overlooking. You will never find several agencies working in one district, doing the same kind of work, while there are none at all in anothet. A central confidential index of inâ€" dividuals and families receiving assistance from member agencies avoids duplication of service to the individual or family. The Central Planning Body also works out joint educational projects involving variâ€" ous _ services â€" something which would be impossible if all agencies worked separately. How does the United Welfare Chest combat the problem of juvenile delinquency? Organizations such as the Y.M.C.A. and Y.W.C.A., settlement houses, boys‘ and girls‘ clubs, all provide supervised recreation and informal character education programs to prevent juvenile delinquency. The case work services help boys and girls who need help before they turn to antiâ€"social behaviour. These agencies also help parents to work out healthy family relationships. What "preventive work" are the private agencies in the United Welfare Chest doing in the field of public health and family welfare? Preâ€"natal educational classes conâ€" ducted by member agencies, giving an important preventive service in the field of maternal and child health. ‘The Health League has educational programs concerning venereal disâ€" ease, bad nutrition, cancer, etc. The Victorian Order of Nurses and the St. Elizabeth Visiting Nurses carry on a preventive health educaâ€" tion service as they visit homes. The Visiting Homemakers‘ Associâ€" ation service in nutrition and eduâ€" cation is important as a health conâ€" serving measure. The family welâ€" fare agencies help people meet their problems and prevent family breakdown by their teaching in homemaking, in child guidance and parent education. Day Nurseries, giving care to the children of working mothers, give these children a social start toâ€" wards beinpg healthy, happy, useful citizens. oster homes care, proâ€" vided for some thousands of chilâ€" dren each year, does likewise. Several youth agencies conduct excellent courses in preparation for marriage. Has the aftermath of war caused an increase in the use of United Welfare Chest services? Yes.
