I‘m back again, It‘s against my better judgment though, I was talking to Percy the other day. Percy is one of my occupational hazards. While I‘m busy listening to records, Percy comes and wants to listen too. ‘That wouldn‘t be so bad either if he didn‘t try to read the title of the records while they were being played. Of course even that has its advantages; Percy‘s crooked nose often gives better quality than a straight needle. What really bothers me and gives me all the headaches is trying to disentangle Percy from the autoâ€" matic record changer, . Ah well, Percy‘s a good head even though it is rather small. I have a number of semiâ€"classiâ€" cal records which 1 recently enâ€" joyed listening to (Fercy notwithâ€" standing) and want to tell you about. Aâ€"THE DONKEY SERENADE Bâ€"GYEFSY LOVE SONG T Here are two old favourites on one Victor record and sung by two wellâ€"known operatic singers, DORâ€" OTHY KIRSTEN and ROBERT MERRILL. Their rendition of "Wanting You" is particularly fine, but both are sung in a simple and effective manner. As a matter of fact, I thought that the first side was sung with just a little too much restraint. But then, I may be just an â€" old drooling sentimentalist. "When I Grow Too Old To Dream" exhibits some good duet work by the pair. Aâ€"WHIFFENPOOF SONG Bâ€"THE SWEETHEART OF SIGMA CHI It should be remembered that :g:les are alive, The cells within : fruit are continually hrenhin;, taking in oxygen and giving off earbon dioxide, For this reason if glass jars are used the tops should Heavily waxed cellophane or wide mouthed glass jars can be used to ndvnnts? in controlling loss of moisture. If apples are kept in this way, the moisture, which would normally escape through small porelike holes in skin, is held in. _ â€" â€" not be screwed on tightly. If tightly sealed the apples will sufâ€" foceate and take on objectionable flavours. on If the householder is to benefit from these more efficient methods, care must be given to apples after they are purchased. in heated homes apples soon lose moisture, becoming wilted or shrivelled. With the loss of moisture, flavour and crispness also disappear. _ Science has contributed much to the efficient storage of apples. Modern refrigeration can now be used to retain the full fresh flavour of fruit for a much longer period than in the days of our grandâ€" parents. Efficient methods of handâ€" ling the crop from tree to storage have also made it possible to obtain apples in their full fresh, crisp and flavourfdl condition for months after harvest, says W. R. Phillips, Division of Horticulture, Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa. Correct temperatures are most important. The best temperature ll" 32 degrees F., but 40 degrees F. ROBERT MERILL has recorded these two beautiful waltzes with Russ Case and his orchestra and a Male Chorus on the Victor Label. MERILL seems to be improving with every record he makes, Both sides are very popular college songs which gives lots of opportunity for some lovely harâ€" mony. ‘The Male Chorus doesn‘t miss out on any opportunity either, rendering it precisely, and it never threatens to drown out the soloist. IN OLD VIENNA f An Album of Srauss Waltzes Sung By Miliza Korjus Here is a Victor Smart Set alâ€" bum that is really a collector‘s item. Whenever 1 think of Strauss waltzes, I think of them being sung by MILIZA KORJUS, and I think many people associate her with these waltzes. This unâ€" doubtedly is the result of that meâ€" morable movie, "The Great Waltz," which has been and is being revised many times quite successfully. Giuseppe Bamboschek conducts the orchestra in the following Strauss selections: ON THE BEAUTIFUL BLUE DANUBE, EMPEROR WALTZ, ONE THOUSAND AND ONE NIGHTS, and WINE WOâ€" MEN & SONG. It is a pleasure to listen to Miliza‘s lovely soprano voice which seems to sing these wellâ€"loved waltzes with such ease, with verve and with feeling. The difficult phrasings and the sustained notes are acomplished alike with ease and skill. This is an album that the whole family would enjoy. _ Percy interrupted me at this point to make some foolish remark, He said that you don‘t have to be Scotch to listen to a record several times at the store before buying it. Its when you don‘t buy it that you‘re Ncotch, he said. Now, my Scottish blood pressure rose (a registered 1.5 points) and I replied in an appropriate manner, throwing him out the back door, Of course, Jingle bells, jingle bells! Do you realize that there are only fortyâ€" five more days till Christmas? Well, there are. And everyone knows its a good thing to shop early for Christmas. Of course, any of the records mentioned above would make a fine gift but there are some records and albums of special interest at this time. I‘ve only got space to mention one this week (Percy‘s been talking too much) so that next week there‘ll be some more Christmas records menâ€" tioned including some excellent I realized afterwards that Percy hadn‘t mentioned any names, but principles are principles, begorra. CHILDHEN‘S RECORDS. _ _ MERRY XMASâ€"BING CROSBY WHITE XMAS, DANNY BOY, ADESTE FIDELES, and two sung with the Andrew Sisters: JINGLE BELLS, and SANTA CLAUS IS COMIN‘ TO TOWN. Der Bingle does a very good job on all of these. This Decca Album is not new but it contains many perennial seaâ€" sonal favourites. These include Red Skelton as he l'zun in "Merton of the Movies," a howling hit about ifolly wood, wh rhn at Mount Dennis Theatre Wednesday and Th-rdor-, November 17â€"18. Included on the programme is Robert hom- gomery in "Ride a Pink Horse." ON T _ ‘This new musical radio show features a. cast of all Canadian talent, including the Leslie Bell Singers under the distinguished direction of Dr. Leslie Bell. Fresh from a picture-making stint for the National Film Board, the Leslie Bell Singers entertain with selecâ€" tions rangi%g from folk songs and simple love lyrics to timeless works by the masters. w2 They blend their voices with a 30-§iece strir:f and _ woodwind orchestra conducted by brilliant young comgoser-conducwr~arrang- er Howard Cable. This young Canâ€" adian is wellâ€"suited to his post, not only because of his impressive record on Canadian radto programs but also due to his previous experâ€" ience working with Dr. Bell. Leslie Bell Singers Sundayâ€"6.00 p.m. Charles Jordan, 30â€"yearâ€"old Canâ€" adian lyric baritone, is the featured soloist on the program. I think many local people share my enthusiasm for the Leslie Bell Singers who have appeared a number of times in Toronto conâ€" certs and have taken part in several radio broadcasts. However, the choir is singing for the first time on a commercially sponsored radio series as this is, As a matter of fact, "Variety," the American entertainment manual, acclaims the Singers as 50% better than any comparable group. Charles Jordon who does some very good rolo no="~ ~~=~=»s in the alfâ€"hour show, is wellâ€"known in Canadian raqo. 1..s w.ue aicn bariâ€" tone, backed by extensive concert work and other experience, adds much to the show. The whole proâ€" gram is slickly arranged and preâ€" sents quite. an enjoyable halfâ€"hour of Canadian talent, talent which is second to none, I think. CJBC. Mickey Lester Show F Mon,â€"Fridayâ€"11.05 p.m. Mickey Lester presents a very informal hour of recorded music and a generous helping of chitâ€"chat. In a recent poll in Toronto, Mickey Lester was rated as the best discâ€" jockey, and that‘s going some beâ€" cause there seem to be plenty of discâ€"jockeys in the local radio world. In spite of a little too much corn sometimes, the program is an excellent one of its type mainly because Mickey Lester gets such a big kick out of it himself, or seems to. â€" Mickey intersperses his records with jokes, commercials (which are also jokes to Lester), poems, and sometimes even a serious reâ€" mark or two. Even though Lester kibitzes with the commercials, he gets the important points across partly because he makes the comâ€" mercial enjoyable or laughable. Lester regularly muffs lines in his enthusiasm and then laughs, and so does the listener. Don‘t get me wrong, however, for Lester‘s dicâ€" tion is quite clear normally. Trouble is he never seems quite normal. (I‘m making with the joke. He speaks very clearly.) There‘s lots of variety in his approaches to the listener too and his mood varies from extreme seriousness about world affairs to idiotic talk about his motherâ€"inâ€"law. When Lester is serious, he very often has something of merit to say. In his THE WAY | HEARD IT HOWARD CABLE 4A RADIO COMMENTARY By Alf. Bird chitâ€"chat, he very frequently refers to local figures (eg. Miss. Toâ€" ronto) and gives a local colour which is so often lacking.in Canâ€" adian radio programs, especially of a recorded nature. There‘s. more corn served on Mickey Lester‘s Show than you get in a dollar dinner, but the show is guaranteed to cheer you if you‘re blue. The records on the program ma seem at first to vary from the rid{ iculous to thé more ridiculous, but on listeninfg further you‘ll find a number of quite sane selections. The program usually begins with jazz, then there‘s some popular music, and sometimes some popular semiâ€"classics. Then he may play an pldie, perhaps a waltz, and very often he plays a classical selection, perhaps a short symphony or a suite. Lester regularly reads a short, usually sentimental poem with proper feeling. The show ends with the familiar words of Mickey Lester‘s ghflos phy, "Take it easy my friendly. ’I?nke it eui and you‘ll last longer and finis a whole lot stronger." On CKEY. A Look in the Crystal THE VARSITY STORYâ€"Univerâ€" sity of Toronto students present the first program in a series of variety programs.
