It has been â€" fouml by sur- vey that 20 per cent of all public school children need visual ‘assist- ance. It is not sufficient to sur- mise that, even though a child claims 'to see clearly, the seeing apparatus functioning normaiiy. The nervous system which controls vision, can adjust itself to faulty associations. Under such condi- (tions, clear vision is only main- tained atlthe expense of the abnor- mally functioning nerves. These associations may be ac- cepted for a long period but more often they “use trouble after only a short time. Eventually the child may complain of blurred vision, headaches or tired eyes. When they appear, corrective measures should be taken. The remedial action takes the form of a complete eye examination by an optometrist. Following a complete visual analy- sis he may recommend visual train- ing, lenses, or sometimes a check on general health. However, in most cases, this stage should never be reached. To quote a phrase, “an ounce of pre- vention is worth a pound of cums." This sums up the reasons why a child’s eyes should be looked after early in life. If a ehild's eyes are checked periodically from primary school on, then preventative action can be taken against any tendency for the eyes to develop faulty see- ing habits. I It is imperative for the parents to recognize this problem. They should not wait until the child com- plains of some visual defect to 'act, been se oft times the child will en- dureip‘oor and uncomfortable vision until . ’hecomes unbearable. Om- lionally the child has never seen icomfortably and hence does not ‘how the normal condition. Optometrists of today are trained and skilled in recognizing any vis- ual failing in a child.
