Devotees of the ancient Scottish art of curking come into their own â€"motion pictureâ€"wiseâ€"with the release of â€" Associated â€" Screen Studios‘ February Canadian Camâ€" eo short subject, The Roaring Game. Canadian Studio Releases Film On The Roaring Game This is the first time that a moâ€" tion picture has been produced on curling, and it appropriately feaâ€" tures Ken Watson, of Winnipeg, or as he is known to curlers on this continent, "Mr. Curler." One of the world‘s outstanding curlers, Watâ€" son has thrice skipped rinks to Canadian curling championships. This oldâ€"worla game has been adapted to the pace of the new, and today it is a fastâ€"moving, exâ€" citing sport that has swept across the northern half of the North Amerxican continent. In western Canada, particularly, the craze has been greatest. Out on the prairies they start curling at a very tender age, and Regina boasts of the largest juvenile curling group in the country, known as the "Jam Tin League." This odd title derived from the fact that the young players make their own "stones" out of concreteâ€"filled 5â€" lb. jam tins. The picture mentions that the curling fraternity now numbers in the hundreds of thousâ€" ands, which all adds up to the startling fact that there are more curlers than golfers in Canada! A flashback in The Roaring Game shows quarrying operations in the isle of Ailso Craig, the only spot in the world where suitâ€" able granite for curling stones is found. The camera reveals that the pieces of blasted rock are chosen for their fine grain and uniform texture, their toughness and their evenness of color, while techniques handed down from generation to generation produce each year over two thousand pairs of stones. This motion picture had its world premiere in Winnipeg late in January during the playing of the annual Manitoba bonspiel, and hundreds of bonspiel participants attended its showing. Direction of The Roaring Game was handled by Gordon Sparling, while the script was written by Associated Screen Studio film diâ€" rector, John McDougall, a eurler of no mean repute himself. The musical score which has a delightâ€" ful Scottish motif was written by Lucio Agostini, celebrated: Canaâ€" dian musician. 123456 What‘s the most pressing busiâ€" ness on a farm these days? Why, cider, of course. ROBERT T. PATTERSON James Hector Lithgow, who joined the Manufacturers Life in 1908 as a $5 a week clerk in its Actuarial Department, was elected president ‘of the company at a board of directors meeting on Dec. 13. The appointment of Mr, Lithâ€" gow fills the vacancy caused by the death on Nov. 25 of the late president, Melvile Ross Gooderâ€" Insurance Firm Elects A New President Born in Bobcaygeon, Ontario, in 1890, the son of James and Mary (Long). Lithgow, he was educated in local public and high schools and at Trinity College School, in Port Hope, Ont. He became a member of the board of directors in 1936 and eight years later was elected viceâ€"president and general manager. Mr. Lithgow‘s rapid promotion was due in part to his wide techâ€" nical background, the achievement of many years of intenisve study in the actuarial field, In 1911, three years after he had joined the Manufacturers Life, he became an Associate of the Actuarial Society of America. The following year he became an Associate of the Instiâ€" tute of Actuaries of Great Britain, and in 1923 he became a Fellow of the Actuarial Society of America.
