J. Cedwallader, Mgr. 43 Main St. N. â€" CH. 1â€"1153‘ Last year, after the usual hours of _ â€" deliberation in the toy department, he â€"<C purchased a construction set for building . V o4 D an electric motor. He had seen one of " these advertised in a mechanics magaâ€" p zine at a "much higher" price and this _A \ was a bargain. Going through the same t procedure, he built the motor, then took it apart and returned it. This year the toy department didn‘t P , inspire him with ideas, though he adâ€" mitted spending as much time looking. He invested in a record player, and after unpacking it and playing all his favorite records, now it is ready to go back to the store. And men say women can‘t make decisions! I wonder what the teenâ€"age brother receives for Christmas. MENTAL HYGIENE * ' This is one time of the year when they have an excuse to play with children‘s toys withâ€" I d out disturbance, criticism or "J teasing from other members of the family. The year before last, one young man bought his teenâ€"age brother an ultraâ€"modern electric train three weeks before Christmas. _ After assembling, then dissembling, the the equipment to make sure it was in proper working order, he decided his brother had outgrown the electric train stage and returned his purchase to the store. When Miss Muniel Doucett, Director of Nursirfg Educaâ€" tion at the Ontario Hospital, New Toronto, spoke on Mental Hygiene at one of the regular Red Cross Home Nursing lectures, the audience was predominantly teenâ€"agers. Using simple case histories, Miss Doucett told the class what happens to those who have a negative approach to life. She pointed out the advantages of selfâ€"improvement through positive thinking by explaining the attributes of a personality which may be developed to avoid mental or emotional illness. Describing the series of stages a mentally ill person goes through, she went on to outline the various treatments, including psychotherapy, or suggestion, and electroâ€"convulsive, or shockâ€"treatment. "Out of the 1,470 patients at the hospital, more than half are female," she said, stressing the fact that illness of this sort is not uncommon, but can be avoided. She said people should be interested in others. A sense of humor or ability to laugh at yourself and your own situations, sympathy and understanding, are attributes to develop in a personality in avoiding mental illness. LOWER TAXES If the resolution initiated by the Ontario Young Proâ€" gressive Conservatives is supported in Parliament there would undoubtedly be an increase in the marriage rate. However, there would also be strong protests and complaints from everyone married within the past five years, not to mention older couples who didn‘t have any assistance when they were starting out. The Ontario Young Progressive Conservatives claim that young couples are being crushed by heavy tax burdens during their early married Jife and suggest special tax exemption should go into effect. In a recent issue of a popular Canadian magazine, a Canadian citizen wrote an article on the price we are payâ€" ing for living in Canada. He gave a variety of ways to lower taxes, without damaging the high standard of livâ€" ing we enjoy. Rather than lower taxes for any one group, Would this encourage home ownership, or merely allow freer spending for five years in the majority of cases? At the termination of the five year exemption period, young couples would suddenly be reduced to lower incomes. What then? This resolution, though it sounds very appealing to young Canadians, seems unfeasible and impractical, just lower taxes. is Always Appreciated CAMERA FAN ‘ Photographic A Wide Selection is Available At â€" Bv GER!
